Start-up Bully Sound has launched its newest high-end home-audio component, the $7,900 BSC-60s Class A amplifier rated at 2x60-watt into 8 ohms.

Quote:
n late 2011, the company launched its first product, the BSC-100m Class A 100-watt monaural amplifier at $14,750/pair. Its third product, to be released soon, will be the BSC-LL1 remote control line-level preamplifier at an expected $6,900 to $7,900.

The specs...

Bully’s latest product, the dual-mono BSC-60, is stable to 1 ohm, boosting output to 2x120 watts into 4 ohms, 2x240 watts into 2 ohms, and 2x480 watts into 1 ohm, both channels driven.

At 2x60 watts into 8 ohms, the amp runs at full Class A, but into 4 ohms, the amp run at Class A at up to about 2x80 watts but goes into Class AB mode after that.

The output stage for each channel consists of massive internally mounted heat sink towers to cool the six 230-volt, 17-amp 200-watt output devices. The BSC-60s also lets users reduce the Class A bias on the amplifier via a front-panel rotary switch to 50 percent, or about 30 watts, for a very low power eco mode.

The aluminum powder-coated chassis measures 16.5 by 9.75 by 18.25 inches, and it features custom-machined hardcoat anodized front panel, decorative inserts, and solid-brass machined gold-plated output binding posts.

Frequency response is said to be 20Hz to 20kHz +/- 0.25 dB with THD of less than 0.08 percent at 20Hz to 1kHz, at less than 0.7 percent at 10kHz, and less than 2 at 20kHz at 100-watt output into 8 ohms.

this thing better have 24k gold inside it.

Geez, what a ripoff. Who in their right mind would pay that for a measly 60W?
Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only one who immediately thought this looked like a ripoff! Only 60 watts and its huge for its power rating too. Color me unimpressed.

My old Nelson Pass designed Nakamichi class A amps exceed the Spec's of these products for 10% of the cost.

Lots of Kool Aid slurpers will go for this. Then they'll wax poetic with their usual, predictable on of five or so canned phrases such as: Ohhhhhhh my speakers midrange blossomed, the soundstage expanded hugely, the music became emotional.....blah, lah, blah. Kool Aid Classic for the delusional cave dweller crowd. LOL

But,but wait it will hit a cool 80wpc at 4 ohm, AB though. rolleyes.gif

Because it actually delivers 60 watts. Although I could by a McIntosh amp that delivers more wattage for the same price and with a THD of .0001%.

The comments are great. Anyone care to benchtest one just for fun?

Do you want to send me one to test?

The Nakamichi Stasis amps were fine amps, but were Not class A. Take a look at the true class A amps Pass Labs offers. I don't know anything about the bully sounds product but their price is not out of line for a true 60 watt class A amp.

From its published specs, the amp will be idling at close to 1kW.

I wondered about a more than a passing resemblance to a Krell KSA-50 until I checked out their website. The founder of Krell is behind this company.

Hmm Denon AVR-4520CI is rated at 150 wpc x9 channels at 0.05% THD (all channels driven) for only $2,500.

BSC-60s

The BSC-60s, 60 watt class A stereo power amplifier shares every feature and is built to the same standards as its big brother the BSC-100m. This 60 Watt per channel amplifier is built around a split 1,368 VA custom toroidal transformer and over 50,000 microfarads of filter capacitance per channel. The BSC-60s amplifier can double its 8 ohm rated output power into 1 ohm producing 480 watts continuously both channels driven.

The BSC-60s is a dual mono design having discrete driver, output and protection circuits.

The output stage for each channel is comprised of 2 massive internally mounted heat sink towers designed to cool the six 230V, 17A, 200W output devices. The towers are optimized to disperse the heat of the 60 watts pure Class A power over a wide cross section reducing the overall chassis temperature. The BSC-60s also allows the user to quickly reduce the Class A bias on the amplifier to a 50% or approximately 30W class A mode and further to a very low power ECO mode via the front panel rotary switch. Bias flexibility allows control over your power demand in different listening situations without limiting power output.

The BSC-60s also boasts aluminum powder coated chassis, custom machined hardcoat anodized front panel and decorative inserts, and solid brass machined gold plated output binding posts. BSC products have a 5 year warranty for parts and labor.

Specifications:

Apples and oranges. If that Denon were outputting a constant 60 watts through 2 of its channels (which is what a class A amp does with no signal) it would cook it's self in short order not even mentioning what the class A amp will do into lower impedances. Amps do sound different to me but if you can not tell the difference then that is fine too.

This is a 480W/ch amp into 1ohm, useful for difficult loads like electrostatics. An amp may be neutral if it is operating within design limits, under severe current limiting it is a completely different matter.

In order to achieve the same voltage at the speaker terminal the amp will have to provide 8x the current at 1 ohm compared to 8ohms (ie 8x power) , most common off the shelf stuff will current limit and clip the output signal before getting here.

There are better options if the intent is to drive ordinary 8 ohm speakers.

Does anyone remember the Audio magazine review from the 80s where they actually used a Mark Levensen class A amp as a welder?
