can I use a clasic T antenna run across my front wall (old school FM style) as a UHF/VHF antenna?

They sell those type of FM antennas at Radioshack. They are made of twinlead flat wire. They can work for VHF and possibly UHF depending upon signal strength at your location. You can always buy it and return it if it does not work. Or use it on an FM receiver.

Post your tvfool results so we can get a better idea of reception in your area. Generally those T-antenna set-up work for FM and VHF. You might get lucky with UHF.

However, that might not provide enough Gain for your indoor location, in which case you might want to

As for any antenna...location, location, location...be sure to point it towards the towers, keep away from metal,
try to "look" through a window if possible....or perhaps mount it IN the window....perhaps using 3/4-in Mylar Foil.

You shouldhave no problem getting stations with a conventional indoor antenna like this one from Radio Shack:
