Well I bit the bullet but won't be setting this beast up until tomorrow. I tried to get BestBuy to match the BJ's price but no go. At least I got them to match the Sam's price. I have a feeling the price will drop in the next 30 days so I'll just go in then and get some money back:)

Anyway now I need to go through the thread again and find some settings to use. BTW my serial # starts with 51 so hopefully I get a good panel. Isn't there something you guys were doing about the lip synch issue before you got the firmware upgrade? PCM or something? I'm not sure exactly what that is though. I just plan on hooking up my set top box to the vizio via HDMI (I don't run a receiver). I don't know how long it'll take for the vizio to download any new firmware but I really would like to avoid any lip synch issues if at all possible.

Anyway I'm curious to see this beast in action.

I've started to test out the DLNA features of this set. In summary, it is pretty bad.

- It is not listed @ dlna.org as being certified. It certainly doesn't appear to be in any event
- Non-ASCII characters in Album, Artist, or Name cause the unit to produce an empty list.
- A container which returns more than 87 to 89 items results in an empty list.
- Yanking the DLNA server out from under the Vizio (e.g. changing DLNA settings) can cause the unit to crash and shutdown.
- The content returned for many albums, and now with 1.1.5 containers, is just wrong. Drilling into a Grateful Dead album, tracks from a Dido album are returned.
- The Vizio is peculiar in that it asks what media type you want (Music, Video, Photo), but then once you select any, it presents you with the DLNA server's root containers. If you pick Music or Video, you get a list view, whereas Photos gives you a larger folders view. But it will only show content of the chosen type.
- I've had the unit crash a number of times, once with a loud popping noise while trying to play a video and again after the unit was powered on.
- it is ungodly slow, taking 4-15 seconds to produce results from a drill down, and due to bugs above, often returns empty lists.
- No surprise here, but it does not play FLAC files.
- The unit tends to bounce in and out of containers sometimes when you drill into one.
- The unit does not advertise itself, so you can't push content to it (or even use Device Spy to determine what formats it supports).

Its a relatively cheap, pretty good looking TV. If you want it for DLNA, look elsewhere and don't waste your time here. I've had to work pretty hard to get my large music collection presented (by customizing the server to avoid this units pitfalls).

blu ray is 1080p, for now, hd tv is only broadcast in 1080i and 720p....720p is best for sports...

Today is 1.23.13.....16 days since this TV was purchased serial 46 from Costco. Just woke up and turned on the TV and saw I had the new FW 1.1.5. I never had lip sync issues from day 1 so right now I will not notice the change. Now just need to watch and see if this FW causes any other issues.

It would be nice to have a feature to stop automatic FW updates......don't fix something that is not broke. I have seen FW updates hose all sorts of computers.

Please make sure you add your info in the tracking thread.
http://www.avsforum.com/t/1450621/vizio-e601-a3-how-long-have-you-had-this-unit

You can start with my settings on page 43 then tweak from there. But you will want to make sure you find the best settings for your environement

You should get the FW 1.1.5 update pretty soon.....they are being pushed out fast.....just got my this AM wth serial 46.....I have already heard some 50+ getting them already. Make sure you get this setup to the internet quickly.

DLNA does work.....I have read somewhere on another site. I will track down for you and post here.

Just a heads up. It looks like there's been an across the board price drop for the e601i-A3 for Super bowel (finally). $879-$899 at most retailers and a lot are while supplies last.

Thanks for the response. Your post confirms many of the exact same issues that I have experienced with this set. I can forgive the simplistic implementation of DLNA and the filename quirks, but the lockup issues are unacceptable.

I had hoped that the .15 firmware update would fix the DLNA lockup problem, but i just got the update last night, and my 10GB Bluray version of Pandora only made it about 20 minutes until the set locked up. On the plus side, after the firmware update the menus are more responsive and overall boot time seems slightly reduced.

Maybe the new TV that Vizio is shipping me will perform better, but I am guessing that the firmware still needs further tweaks. rolleyes.gif

Thanks. I'm not sure what the problem is. Nothing has changed as far as any new devices in the house. TV signal is wireless and about 50 ft from router. The ps3 is about 80 ft and it plays both netflix and YouTube fine. Weird to me

I know the colors can be tweaked to make it look good, but I wanted to know how good the picture was for non-cable, dvd content.

Thanks

didn't read far enough to see if anyone replied but i'll chime in.

ANY non-HD content is going to look a certain level of "crap" on a TV this size. Standard Def TV might even make your eyes hurt.

DVD content though will be up-converted by any BR player to at least some degree, usually enough to remove the fuzzy appearance you were seeing at the store. I play DVD's through my Xbox or PS3 and both of them seem to do a fine job of up-converting the media.

The biggest problem it has caused for me is most of the media on my Plex server is standard def, which leaves me searching for....er.....re-converting my media to... a better format.

The E70 is on at Amazon for 1599. Couldn't resist, I had to snag one! For the price of a premium 55 last year I have a 60 and a 70...wow.

I noticed this. How long do you have to get a difference refund on items at best buy? its only 40 bucks, but hey....its 40 bucks!

Noticed this as well-I just ended up hiding all of the SD channels in my guide since they mostly have an HD counterpart and if they don't they're likely not worth watching anyway. The one exception is ABC Family which I had to keep in for my wife and daughter-it doesn't bother them but it drives me nuts!

Wow it's $898 at WalMart. I'm sold

What type of sound settings do you guys recommend if I'm going to just use the TV's speakers. Probably turn on the SRS surround? Anything else?

I hooked it up earlier today but haven't spend but 5 minutes with it. Going to plug in some settings and see how I like it.

How do I check which version of fw I have?

Also does it take awhile for the lip synch issue to appear? I didn't notice any earlier but it was only on for about 5 minutes.

My sync issue would begin after about 30 minutes and get progressively worse.

as for sound, if its anything like my 32" vizio upstairs, you'll quickly get tired of the plastic buzzing with the internal speakers and want to grab a 2.1 system or at the very least, a sound bar.

FWIW, the "SRS surround" option on my 27" Insignia CRT circa 2005 actually sounds pretty good compared to when it is off.

to find the firmware go to the menu, then help, then it should show up in there.

I'm on a wired connection with my TV. I don't mind the freezing with the app that much. (Whatever it happens). But the popping noise that's coming from the TV bothers me a lot more. I happens whenever I turn off the TV to fix the freezing issue. Like I said, I can't tell if the noise is coming from the speaker or the TV.

Meant to ask this before-on the box it says that I should be able to access Pandora via the SmartTV apps. When I scroll through my apps I have Amazon, Rhapsody, MGO, Netflix, various Yahoo apps, Youtube, etc...but no Pandora. Anyone else having this issue? My TV is located in the basement, half of which is finished living space and the other half which is my shop. I'd like to be able to access Pandora as my source of music when I'm working down there instead of using my laptop which I currently do. I have Dish Network which includes SiriusXM channels but my Pandora stations only play what I want to hear wink.gif

I purchased one of these ...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003C15798/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

and it was defective so last night I had to temporarily use the optical out of the TV and into my sony 5.1 system instead of going directly out of the cable box. My guess is that it's not a 5.1 passthrough but it sure sounded like it! Can anyone confirm that the optical audio out of the TV is your basic 2.1 for audio coming in via HDMI/cable box and then becomes 5.1 only when Netflix, Amazon, and other smart apps are being used?

You should see Download while you're in the app store and at the app you want to install towards the bottom of the screen

I never had the popping noise. I used the tv speakers for about a month though, then went to the VHT510 vizio 5.1 Soundboard system.

I had the same freeze popping noise happen to me during Netflix as well. Happened to me 3-4 times already. Hopeful the new .15 firmware fixes it.

Costco online is at $879.99 until 2/3/13. I won't get a chance to go to a warehouse until the weekend. Hope I can pick one up then...

I was under the impression that all tv makers we not allowed to pass 5.1 through the optical cable because of various concerns and copy protection laws but the audio coming from my comcast cable box to the tv via HDMI and then out via of the tv via the optical to my sony 5.1 system sure sounds like 5.1 to me. So I chatted with support at Vizio and here's their comments...

Gabby: I understand you would like to know if the optical port on the 60" will pass 5.1?
Me: correct ... i have the audio from my cable box going into the tv via the hdmi cable
Me: and i am going out of the tv with the optical cable into my 5.1 system ... i don't believe it is 5.1 but it sure sounds like it
Gabby: Here at VIZIO we pride ourselves in providing best in class customer support and all of our support is U.S. based, and I can assist you with that.
Gabby: Yes the optical port will send 5.1 as long as the programming or movie supports 5.1
Me: are you talking about the smart tv movies like netflix and hulu or does that also include signal coming from a cable box?
Gabby: This would be for all devices and the apps on the TV.
Me: because i was under the impression that copywrite protection laws forbid tv companies to pass 5.1 from a cable box but it sure sounds like 5.1 to me
Me: so when i plug my hdmi cable from comcast into the tv, the tv will output 5.1 through the optical cable? are you sure of that?
Gabby: Yes it would work.

could she possibly be correct?
