Marantz SR6007 AV Receiver Owner's Thread - Page 3

I just purchased an SR6007 last week. Sounds great with my small Dynaudios but I've been having trouble with Apple Air Play. Finally got it working yesterday but noticed my devices (iPhones and iPads) will have the Airplay icon show up from time to time. I can't figure out the pattern or root cause. I have an ethernet cable going directly into the receiver from a router. Internet radio, etc all seem to work fine. But with airplay, seems like an intermittent thing. Apple devices are mostly updated with latest firmware.
Does anyone have this problem or have any suggestions? I've already power cycled the receiver and router a couple times.

Picked up an SR6007 from Best Buy (open box) at HALF PRICE. When I got it home and plugged it in BEFORE attempting set up, the display said "Retry Update >>>" for 10 seconds, then went black and the unit would't turn on again. Started fiddling with the buttons to find out the display had been turned off. Plugged it back into the AC and my router and it did a complete update. Everything seemed fine.

Then I spent a couple of hours today tearing apart my system and installing the SR6007. Seemed to be doing fine as I successfully went through the Audessy set up. Then played a CD which sounded great. Then switched to the Blu Ray inserted a disk and NOTHING on the TV..Hit the other buttons I had assigned equipment and STILL nothing. Tried doing a set up for device assignment using the little display but it wouldn't allow me to set anything. Then the clicking started.. When I hear clicking its like a PC crashing to me.

Obviously the IDIOTS at Best Buy didn't bother to fully check the unit out when it was returned and sold a bunk piece of equipment.. Really sucks.. Seems like a good receiver, but my concerns about quality as compared to my 11 year old SR8000 may be well founded. Regardless, back it goes!!

As a general rule, anytime you get a demo/used/open box AVR you should ALWAYS reset the microprocessor back to the original factory defaults. Most likely the previous owner returned the unit for the same reason you are ... which could very well be simply a settings issue. On the Blu Ray player, set "Deep Color Output" to OFF.

Thanks for the link. I'm still working on it. Seems ok now but need to watch it closely over the next few days. I'm don't understand why so many power cycles are required but I'm doing it.
The FIRST thing I did was attempt to reset the microprocessor holding the power, MDAX and Zone 2 Source keys.. I held them for over 30-45 seconds and never saw the display blink once.. When the unit stopped outputting video in Set Up mode, I attempted the reset again with the same results. What concerns me most is the internal clicking I started hearing. As you know, it usually signals the protection circuits shutting it down. Also when in the manual input assignment mode using the porthole display, when I scrolled to input assignment and press Enter, this is when I started hearing clicking internally. Am about to return it but am going to call Marantz support. I also have to say that the manual is poorly written like most. As someone loyal to the Marantz brand for over 15+ years and NEVER having a single problem with ANY Marantz (non Chinese manufactured) product, this does not bode well for the brand in my eyes and CERTAINLY not for Best Buy who claims they thoroughly check a unit when it's returned before reselling. Thanks.

Thanks JDS.
We do have 7 speakers.
2 Large front right and left
1 center
2 surrounds right and left.

We have to more large that we tried to put on SBL and SBR but when we play music those speakers are shut down as the system thinks they should only be used for movies.
We have them in Front B now and the Audessey system doesn't see them at all nor do they play.

We would like them to play for all functions we use not just movies in surround sound, if that makes sense.
This is where our confusion is.
We cannot find a menu option to turn on both A and B speakers either.

Thanks for your help!!

jdsmoothie.. Wanted to add that I decided to make one last ditch effort with Marantz support. I got a support tech today that really knew his stuff and gave me a better way to reset the processor (turning unit off, holding Preset + and - keys then turning unit on). When I did that the display showed it had reset to factory. Now I'm deliberating whether I want to go through the WHOLE set up again, removing my old Marantz and installing this one again.. So my question is this:

My primary video source is streaming movies from Netflix, Vudu, etc. and occasionally some Blu Rays and DVDs, Internet radio, CD's and other web based content. I have a Panasonic ST30 series 3D plasma and matching Blu Ray and use a Roku XS as well as the Blu Ray for streaming. While the old Marantz sounds good, I'm convinced that due to its age (11+ years) there's a good chance a more up to date receiver is going to perform better with both music and video.. Your thoughts?
Thoughts on what? You either decide you want a newer model or not although the Audyssey MultEQ XT is likely to do a much better job of improving the audio fidelity from your old receiver.

Huh? Not sure what you mean by "the system thinks they should only be used for movies"? If you connect them to SBL/SBR speaker posts and set Amp Assign to "Surround Back" they should be EQ'd as such and available in the various surround modes regardless of whether playing movies or music. If you choose to use the "Front B" speaker configuration, you can then set the "Front Speaker" setting (p. 129 OM) to either "A" or "B". but not both A+B.

Stuttering playback flac 192/24 on the network.
Theoretically, "network reset" the can I fix it?

Jdsmoothie

I'm having the same issue where the 6007 was stuck in a loop while updating. I tried the things you told the other guy to try. How can I power on while holding buttons if I can't power off? I can't get anything to work? Tried unplugging, holdings preset + and - while plugging back in and still nothing. Now when I plug back in it reads download m3 failed and still will let me do nothing. Please help!
Sorry, reads 3a download failed
Ok, so I reset router, modem and left receiver unplugged for 10 min and plugged back in. Now it makes it past the download failed message but restarts the update every time it gets to 11 min left. This is getting frustrating!
Try unplugging the network cable from the AVR and ensure a source other than NET/USB is selected on the unit. Then do the network reset again as you did before. The update may have already downloaded so wait to see what happens when the AVR powers on. If still no joy, then plug the network cable in again and attempt the update.
Thanks, I tried the network reset over and over. I messed with it for 5 hours last night. I can't change any sources. I can't do anything, it just keeps going in that loop. I disconnected it from the internet last night and unplugged it before I went to bed. When I got up this morning I did another network reset, plugged in network cable and plugged the receiver back in and started updating again and gets halfway done and restarts. I don't know what else I can do.

Just purchased this receiver and am having a little trouble setting it up.

What I would like to do is be able to watch the game, but hear audio from a different source (i.e., listen to music)

Currently I accomplish this by running hdmi out of my cable box and directly to my TV, but then (through the cable box) splitting the audio off of the HDMI line and running out to the receiver via digital coax. This solution works fine, except that with the SR6007 it means I dont get GUI for cable viewing as the HDMI input I am using on the TV does not come from the receiver but instead the cable box.

According to the manual it appears that it would be possible for me to accomplish this same setup through the receiver and thus only have one HDMI going into the TV and have GUI all the time. Unfortunately, I have been unable to split the audio from the video in the receiver. Any help would be appreciated.

The music would be coming via Apple TV, which is connected to the receiver via HDMI.

thanks in advance.

The new firmware of March 21, does not work with the remote pause when playing over the network via DLNA. Playing flac 192/24 still stutters mad.gif

UPDATE
According to Marantz, this cannot be done.

If you use a component video and optical cable from the cable box you can then listen to another analog audio source while using the "Video Source" (p. 124 OM) setting to select the component video input.

Yup I follow you on that. problem is I run my audio via the hdmi and apple tv to get lossless audio to the source.

I suppose I could potentially try to run it by airplay though....They indicated that internet radio would work. perhaps that would work as well - thereby getting me my GUI back.

USB Firmware Updates – North American Marantz SR6007 units only

If you are having difficulty loading the latest firmware to your SR6007, please PM me with "SR6007" in the subject line after reading and agreeing with the disclaimer noted below and I will provide the update file.

Disclaimer:
This firmware is for use with North American Marantz SR6007 units only. Feel free to use it under the condition that it not be forwarded to other individuals and is for your personal use only. It is provided with the understanding that you will “use it at your own risk” and it comes without any implied warranty from D&M. You agree that D&M will not be held responsible for any damages to your unit resulting from the inappropriate use of this firmware or from updating the unit in an improper way. As this update being provided to you is not supported by D&M, should you have any installation issues, please do not call Marantz customer service for support as they will be unable to assist you.

After downloading and unzipping the provided .zip file, you will find a “firmwares” folder and a Word document which provides instructions on how to install the firmware update. The “firmwares” folder must be moved to an “empty” FAT16/FAT32 formatted 2GB (or larger) USB memory stick. Note that should you have any issues with the update, you may have to reset the unit’s microprocessor after doing the update so prior to installing the update, be sure to copy the unit’s on board configuration file to a PC using the Web Control SAVE feature.

Also review the following post on the SAVE/LOAD procedure ....

I also have a firmware update available. I purchased the Marantz in Australia so assume the firmware updates would be region specific. Would the changelog be the same as above?

Current firmware: Version 1490-1119-0000-9350-1867
Firmware after update: Version 1490-1169-0000-2220-1977

Firmware update time: Approximately 26 min

AFAIK, the firmware is region specific, although more than likely the base changes as noted above will be the same.

Just got my new SR6007 about 1 month ago an deverything seems to be working just fine. I do have a very simple set up though. With that Marantz I only have two Martin Logan Motion 4 speakers. (Still need to pick out a nice sub) And a brand new Oppo BDP-103, it replaced my older Samsung DVD player, and a Roku XS that handles all of my streaming. When I was watching movies through the Oppo it did not sound anywhere near as good as it did with any of the other devices or just plain TV through the ComCast box. I had to adjust the sound configuration and all of the speakers in the Oppo just like the Marantz. I called Oppo tech suppport and they told me how to have either the Oppo do the sound processing or send a pure signal out to the Marantz and let it do allof the sound processing.
Somehow in the process of configuring the Oppo the Marantz stopped producing any video from either of the two DVD players regardless of which HDMI port they wer plugged into. I could plug the players directly into the TV and they would work fine. I checked for updates on everything that could be updated and they all already had the latest updates. I spent at least an hour trying to figure all of this out with no avail. Then I unplugged the Marantz for a few minutes and miraculously everything was working just fine again. Don't know why...... I tried resetting everything else and it didn't solve the issue.
Bu tif anybody should encounter a problem like this don't forget to totally power the unit down and restart it. It just may solve the issue.
Other than that it sounds great for the bedroom entertainment system. One thing with the Comcast Cable box running through the Marantz and then to the TV, the picture was very bright. No matter what I did, it was just to bright. I have heard of some issues with the handshake between the Marantz and Comcast Cable boxes so I have the Comcast plugged in directly into the TV and have an optical audio cable run from the TV to the Marantz. Tha tsolved the brightness issue and sounds great.
Now, for a good sub...

I have also such an issue with my +CUBE HD satellite receiver, whatever the SR6007 is turned on or not (pass-thru), for any TV, any cable...
[note: it is exactly the same picture I get when I force the HDMI Deep color on my TV for a source which does not support it.]

But the good news is I have found a workaround to fix that "bright image" issue.

Here is the how to [as my menus are in French, maybe my English translation will not be exactly what you have on your GUI] :
- Enter Setup/Video/Output settings: stop the video conversion (and not only the upscaling)
- close the Setup menu and check the picture : it is still bright
- enter the Setup menu again (now the background is black and no longer transparent)
- exit this Setup menu again : now the image is normal, the additional brightness is gone...

But when you turn off/on the SR6007, the problem comes back.
So you have to do the same "enter/exit setup menu" each time you power on your SR6007

Please note that the pass-thru still has the issue, no upscaling feature can be use and there is no on-screen display (volume, sound mode...).

I hope this will help...

In France, there is no direct contact between the end-user and Marantz, we need to contact our reseller who accuses the satellite receiver, not the SR6007.
I tried to describe the issue to Marantz US it order to get a firmware update that fixes it definitely (the firmware update published this week does not fix it).
I am still waiting for the answer.

I recently bought the SR6007 to build a home cinema around. My main interest is playing blu-ray and gaming. I have a concern about the video output. I am in the UK and connected my SkyHD box (satelite pvr) and Playstation 3 via HDMI and am currently only using one output to my panasonic TV. My only concern is that the picture quality is not as good as when I connect these devices directly to the TV. I would describe the display issue as "snow" or "noise" which diminishes the picture quality. Has anyone else experienced this? It is very noticeable when you use the GUI with no input: the "Marantz" symbol on the screen with a black background is a poor quality image. I believe this may be due to the On Screen Display being output only in 480I as default for this receiver - but if i play a bluray disc I can still see the "noise" in the picture even though it is output much clearer at 1080p.

I really don't want to have to connect my video directly to the TV and my audio through the receiver as I believed this unit would do both superbly.

Thanks JDSmoothie. I have read all the comments in this thread so checked out your link previously. It suggests an HDMI quality error but this is not the case as using the same cables directly sees no "sparkles" or "snow". I think I will try a reset if nothing else comes up.
