SVS Ultra Speakers Line - New Kids On The Block - Page 3

Wondering if they will have them setup to audition in their Girard, OH location. If so, I'm not terribly far away. Like to hear them before dropping some coin on them. Biggest problem with my current setup is the center channel is TERRIBLE.

I read it on another forum
darthray check your PM

http://www.lsound.eu/svs-ultra-tower-piano-gloss-black.html
in that page it say:

A composite glass-fiber cone with excellent stiffness/mass ratio which improves sensitivity and maintains pistonic behavior well beyond the pass-band of the driver.

That is excelent news.

Can't wait to see some review.
Knowing SVS quality and paying attention to small details, I have no doubt they will be very good.
I will bet that the reviews will be the same cliber as their Subs and what Oppo did to Blu-ray player.
They might be the next thing when it come to speakers.

very interesting speakers smile.gif

Ultra Tower / $999 each

The flagship Ultra Tower delivers a thrilling audio experience rivalling speakers costing thousands more. Imposing at 45" tall with a unique upswept trapezoidal shape, the handsome Ultra Tower creates a dramatic visual statement, making it the centerpiece of any high-end stereo or home theater system. Equipped with the absolute highest quality drivers, and a unique and highly sophisticated 3.5 way crossover network, the Ultra Tower has a coherent and palpable soundstage, incredible resolution, complete transparency, and amazingly rich, deep and articulate bass response, thanks to dual opposing 8" woofers.

Bumping this thread to hopefully get some more opinions on the set.

I've been floored by SVS as a company; excellent customer support coupled with amazing products. My PC12-NSD floors me every time I watch a movie. I am extremely excited at the idea of a great pair of loud speakers to pair with the sub.

The ULTRA surrounds being bipole is a great addition for the price, the loud speakers seem to have all the mid range and low end that you could desire in the form factor. My current Boston Acoustics VR 975s sacrifice mid range to house an 8" subwoofer with passive radiator and only 5.25" woofers. The subs then have to do everything below 150hz. They aren't bad but I think I can do better.

Has anyone taken the '45 day experiment'? Free shipping both ways from/to SVS to try them out.
Is the price of this set high to everyone? I am having a hard time understanding how they can be overpriced?
I was seriously considering going over today and picking them up. I then looked at the dimensions and realized the towers wouldn't fit in my car. I am really interested in these.

I would go with the real wood black veneer. I had to make the same decision with my PB13Ultra. For me it came down to the upkeep of glossy speakers: fingerprints, smudges scratches etc, however I do love the look. I like my finishes like I like my women... low maintenance! I really wish they would bring back their cherry real wood veneers!
I just received an e-mail today that my piano black Ultra Towers and Ultra Center have been shipped (with the matching Ultra Surrounds perhaps a day behind since the SVS testing takes a little longer on these). Needless to say, I will set them up as soon as they get here and provide feedback after a day or so.

As to Piano Black versus wood black veneers that was an easy choice for me. I wanted the speakers NOW and they only come in Piano Black so far. All my life's choices should be so simple. In addition, I already have Piano Black speakers and they really haven't been a problem.

With my favorite Blu-Rays and CDs ready to rock!

The black piano finish is a pain. Looks terrific but is a pain to dust and keep fingerprints off. I am also against the cloth 'finish' on many speakers nowadays; once THAT gets dusty there is no getting the cloth clean again easily.

The piano only finish on the ULTRAs is making me consider going to dual SB12s for a sleek match. My poor PC12 will look out of place.

Please oh please send us some feed back.

I have my DIY speakers for about 12 years (LCR and back surronds) and about 2 years for my DIY Side surronds (Bi-pole /Di-pole ).
Never had the need to change them. But After building 5 DIY Subs and bought one PB2 (aka PB12Plus/2) 10 years ago and they killed my DIY (to be honest, in those day, there were not many great Drivers for DIY Subs unless you were willing to spend a fortune).
And I never look back for Subs. Bought a second PB2, then replace them with 2 PB13 Ultra.
I am very much looking forward to this new line.
I'm sure it will be a step forward for me.smile.gif

Mason is a great engineer and knowing SVS they would not put Ultra unless it is going to be very good.

My delivery on a set of Ultra Towers is scheduled for this Thursday afternoon. Can't wait. Apparently , they come on a pallet. My wife, who will be home when they are delivered, is probably going to freak.

I'm looking forward to your impressions as well. I ordered the RevelPerforma F208s but there is a 6 week delay.

I was going to give these a shot until they got delayed. Now I'm tempted again because of the ridiculous wait time of the Revels.

I really do wonder if an Internet sub company can produce speakers as good as Revels. Based on my SVS SB13-plus, I believe so. It's an amazingly 'tight' sub that can shake my room. But I digress...

Please do share your findings, thanks.

Hey all

I must say, I am surprise this tread does not have more trafic.
SVS is knowned for building quality Subs with a very good value for price.

Sure an Ultra serie should have a bigger price to match there subs for the no object quality compare to the value speakers.
I personely find $4900 for 7 speakers is a good price, maybe people are not willing to spend this kind of money on a new speaker manufacturer.
That would too bad because I am sure they have cross all their T and dote all the I before calling a ligne of speakers Ultra.
Not too many company go back and foward to the NRC to test their speakers and a good friend of mine who is my Guru for DIY was very impress with the place and this is an electonic genius.

Just saying

Can't wait the magazines start doing some reviews.

I received my ultra series towers and center yesterday. I'm still waiting on the surrounds. the speakers arrived on a what appears to be a homemade pallet. The outside of the boxes depicted the speakers' internals which I was surprised. it showed the actual chambers inside and the port and how deep it was. The speaker were very well packed with heavy cardboard and that white plasticky foam that is tougher that Styrofoam. It was up to 5" in some places. The actual speakers were doubled bagged with one layer of plastic and one layer of fabric material just like the one u see on the back of some curtains (the very soft type).
there was an extra small box on top that baffled me as to what it was. I open that one first and found that they had included the foam plugs for the tower ports. I opened the center speaker next and found the center to be quite heavy. it has slopes in the back and slops in the front that make it very attractive. they definitely have the WOW factor. since the speakers are just like the tower's, I'll talk about that next.
The tower's piano black finish was very nice, the metal speaker rings were not as shine as they appeared on the web or the RMAF video, they did come with feet attachments (spikes and spike plates), and they are very heavy and hard to man handle. especially if you have to take them up a spiral stair case like I have in my house. Now, the actual speaker cones are very attractive. they resemble B&W with that textured look just not as defined as actual Kevlar. They seem solid and of good quality. The tweeters look threatening but only time will tell. on the back of the towers there is a huge 4" port that is placed 17" and centered from the bottom. The baffle cover is very transparent and the quality is not a high as I though it would be. It appears to be a double plastic frame with the cover glued to the first layer and the second layer recessed into the first layer. This actually makes it sturdy and not at all flimsy. I would have loved a light metal frame though. well, with or without, the speakers look great.

I did hook them up and gave them a spin just to see what they would do. I hooked them up to my system that I'm still upgrading
Room 21x15x10 DxWxH
OPPO BDP103
ONKYO NR807
EMO XPA-5
replaced: BOSE 601 Series III
replaced: Infinity center
Surround: Mirage ONISAT V2 for 7.1
PSA-XV30
need to replace: 16 Gauge wire that came with the media room. to 12 gauge ( on order)

Without calibrating, just plug and play, my first impression was that they definitely had a sharp, tight bass that was very impressive. You can just hear it and it puts a smile on your face. It's not overwhelming or earth shaking, just tight. I have heard everything at best buy and Fry's but nothing comes close to the bass this thing has. I would like to compare it to the studio 100 and the acsend sierras'. Now to the highs, again no tweaking, the highs seemed to be a little muffled to me. I was expecting more briteness and sharpness. Maybe they decided to tone it down as to get more clarity. I will say that these things do have a lot of clarity and lucidity than I was expecting. Lets just say the when i put on transformers dark of the moon when Sentinel Prime and the "transformer" title first appears on the movie, I was like wholly crap! These are awesome. As far as music, my wife wanted to play the SADE BD and since she allowed me to upgrade, I agreed. wink.gifwink.gif The vocals where very crisp and clear. the bass was tight and pronounced, the highs still bothered me a little but not to bad. The only thing was that I could hear more detail that before but not as much as i was hopping for. Maybe it's not even there to hear and I'm hopping to hear more than there is.
All in all, if somehow i get stuck with these speakers because i could not make up my mind, I would not lose no sleep over it because it is a great product and there are a lot of factors that I do like...
I'm not a pro but question are welcome.

Thanks for the review, Scorpionrm!

From now on, we might expect some other guys to do the same as well. Bottom line, based on your comments though: another champ has born!! smile.gif

Could you post a pic of the box with the foam plug? I did not see any plugs in my set, but I will look again tonight.

Thanks

I'd bet the tweeters will open up within a few hours of loud music. My Def Techs took a little time, just had to crank it with a pair of XPA-1s biggrin.gif

Give the drivers some time to break in. I was one of those folks who was skeptical of the "Break in" on speakers. But when I first hooked up my Swans I was horribly disappointed, so I turned them down and played them 24/7 for an entire work week at low volumes, higher volumes wheN I was gone during the day. Sat down a week later and MAN what a difference! Give it some time and those drivers should open up and become less harsh.
