I find that scratches are not much of a problem. The problem is grease or skin oils.
Here is what I do:
1-Wash my hands with liquid dishwashing soap.
2-Rinse the recording side of the DVD with luke-warm water.
3-Put a drop of liquid dishwashing soap on the DVD's recording side.
4-With my fingers I spread the soap from the center hole to the edge and give the DVD a gentle massage.
5-Rinse off the soap with luke-warm water.
6-Gently dry the DVD with a soft towel or cloth.
