Atlantic Technology PB-235 Review

I don't know if this has been posted, but it's a great review of the Atlantic Technology PB-235 soundbar:

http://www.hometheater.com/content/atlantic-technology-pb-235-powerbar-soundbar

Apparently (from what I read in a different article) the ability of the device to go down to a respectable bass level (47 hz) means that even if you decide to add a subwoofer for frequencies below that, the lower bass components of the human voice emerge from the soundbar, rather than from a subwoofer placed away from the soundbar.

At 80 hz or above...where most soundbar subwoofer combinations have their crossover...bass becomes somewhat more directional, and the placement of the subwoofer away from the soundbar can contribute to less focused dialog, a frequent complaint with many soundbars.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to more reviews of this cleverly designed soundbar.

Has anybody taken measurements of this and posted them?

I'd love to see them.

He probably means frequency response tests. I'm not sure how meaningful that would be in a soundbar which creates a surround field, although it proably would show something about bass response.

One of the things intriguing about the review was how convincing the surround sound mode is on this unit...all with a fairly simply and small array of speakers. It's the sound processing combined with the quality of drivers, I'd imagine, and the deep, centralized bass, which creates more coherency.

I wonder what the price will be near the holidays.

Does the" just got it" refer to your having purchased the unit?

Recently purchased the unit and installed Sunday in conjunction with Panasonic TCP55vt50 (in master bedroom)

Right now you can get these for $700 (shipping/tax included)

Not outrageous

Believe that the review was a bit over the top given my initial take (will give impressions later in the week) but nice not having to deal with a sub

Yes a sweep using REW below the transition region say 20-200hz.

I assume this is for bedroom or family room usage, so in that environment and its layout.

My vizio soundbar is cheap but ok for bedroom usage, I wonder how much more "Wow" this would add to that type of low to mid volume watching.

What kind of environment are you using it in in terms of walls, reflectivity, etc.

Have you played with the different surround modes?

Where did you see it for $700.00? If giving that info is against AVS policy, please PM me.

Thanks

That review makes it sound very impressive. I got a B&W Panorama vibe while reading the review regarding not needing a sub at all. I am somewhat tempted as I wait for the Panorama 2 in the US. It is a lot cheaper obviously but the lack of HDMI has me pausing a bit. I need more than just the 2 optical inputs on the back (I guess I could get a switcher). I just found out Nintendo is releasing the Wii U without an optical input (just hdmi) so that will create an issue sound wise. If this sound bar had HDMI, I would have already purchased it and pocketed the savings smile.gif.

Long time watcher of the forum here and wanted to get some feedback on a related decision I'm trying to make.

I was planning on getting a new Atlantic Technology PB- 235 based on what I have read, but now I've located a B&W Panorama Version 1 for $1,000 on Craigslist locally.

Any thoughts on how they compare?

Neither has the HDMI- which would be the tiebreaker. Unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of being able to hear either in person so it's difficult for me to compare.

Any thoughts you all have on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Read the review and was intrigued, until I saw the dimensions. At 44" long you're limited where you can place it. I have a stand with a shelf, but it's only 42 inches wide. If I put it on the cabinet in front of my Plasma I'll block out some of picture as well as the sensor due to the 235's height. You pretty much have to have your set wall mounted or on a mount connected to a cabinet. Can't see setting it on the floor. My Zvox seems to still be the better option.

i sent my back.. DAMN, it was almost $50 to sent it back!
It is HUGE for sound bar.. it is ugly for sure.. comparing to other sound bars.. Sound was OK for more like 3.1 system.. or even less 2.1... for surround sound I would just go with AV receiver and speakers.. Learned on my own!

Can somebody tell me if this unit has auto off and on when receiving an audio signal. Also does it automatically switch to the input which is receiving the signal? Thanks

^^ No to both questions.
