Big man..where did you read that Epson projectors fail after 1-2 years?

I didn't read that, it was just a hypothetical to the poster above, who says Epson warranty service is great, but his projector has been replaced 4 times already.

The 3010 isn't more than 2 years old, so I'm just wondering if a failure rate of 4 times in 2 years is average for Epsons.

I sure hope not.

I think the bulb issue has been resolved but if you search on here you'll see lot of posts and polls about bulb failures in the 8350 and the 8700 etc.

I am looking at 8350, refurbed 8700 and 3020...

Projector Central has their review of the 3020 up. Reading it now, though figured I'd share the link: http://www.projectorcentral.com/epson_3020e_home_video_projector_review.htm
post #66 of 760
Well...that review speaks volumes...especially given what he said about the previous version...I expect to get mine today and can't wait to compare

Sounds like it's not the lag improvement gamers wanted. To bad they couldn't do better in that regard.

Yeah, no lens shift in a $1,600 LCD model in 2012, and borderline unacceptable input lag is quite a disappointment. Seems like the entry level LCD units have gone backwards the last couple of years. Frustrating indeed for those of us looking to upgrade.

I guess I must have read a different review guys...his view was glowing...but to each his own

Lets just all agree that if you're a gamer then the epson 3020 might not be for you. If you're looking affordable option for an impressive home theater projector, the 3020 is a great option.
I see it like this. Laser Discs were awesome. DVD comes out and it destroys the laser disc.
The laser disc image was by far way better then the DVD. But
the dvd offered so much more. Multi Languages. You don't have to flip it over. Small compact.
But the compression on even the best dvd couldn't hold up
the the image of a laser disc. Well maybe there were a couple.
But what does your projector have to offer...OVER ALL.
Get all your WANTS taken care of. Then you'll be happy.
I know what my wants are and I've seen the rest. (LCD)

3D is still a new technology for single lens projectors. In the price range and above to about $3,000.
The 3010 and the 3020. Offer enough to satisfy.
I can't get over the terrible 3D output I've seen on other projectors more expensive then the EPSON.
That shouldn't be the case. (FOR LCD)
As I mentioned before. Find a place that has a great return policy and compare with your own vision.
Reviews on the internet are great. But sometimes,
what you read is not what it is. For what ever reason.

EPSON does not pay me. But I've seen a lot. And I've returned a EPSON a few times for exchange thru there company.
But with so many units being made. New technology. It's expected. I wish it wasn't. But with mass production and costs.
You cannot beat the bang for the buck at these new EPSON Models. I play games. But have yet witnessed any issues at all.
I've made up my mind. But really take a look. Not at the spec's. Cause some people don't understand the spec's properly.
But with your own eyes. In your own home. It might be a hassle to purchase, and return till you find what you want.
But it will all be worth it.

based upon the stellar review by Bill Livosi at Projector Central, I'm ordering the 3020.

My search started a few months ago, first with the Optoma HD33, then the 3010 (but had concerns about crosstalk/ghosting = subpar 3D performance and lousy lag for gaming), considered just looking at simpler, 2d projectors like 8350 and a refurb 8700ub...

But this review seems very promising, about as good as you can get for the $1500 price range.

The 3d is MUCH improved with hardly any ghosting/crosstalk.....huge issue as far as I'm concerned.

And lag is improved from 6 frames to 4 frames, by selecting fast processing....that seems OK, prob average or below, but OK for a casual gamer like me.

To the original poster, in his review Bill says to change the 3d glasses brightness and that helps with flicker....

have you experimented with those settings?

Also, what aftermarket glasses work with the 3020, now that it is RF based?

Is there a certain standard for 3d RF glasses, like DLP link or something like that?

I purchased a pair of Samsung SSG-4100GB 3D Glasses for $19.99 at Best Buy and they work great. So glad Epson made the switch from IR to RF. I think any pair that has the Full HD 3D RF logo on the front should be compatible.

Thanks Doompatrol.

Those are cheap, and probably not as comfortable as the Epson glasses, but I have young kids and at $20 a pair they seem like a nice solution.

Cnet or somebody (just googled it) has a nice comparision of these glasses versus some more expensive Panasonics etc....and they basically conclude that the Samsung glasses are a nice, affordable option, but not super comfortable for those who wear eyeglasses etc.

Epsons are what, $99 a pair?

I think the Pansonics are around $50 a pair.

FYI, I ordered a 3020 package from Visual Apex yesterday.

My 3020 will arrive on Thursday to replace the 3010.... biggrin.gif I saw a lot of ghosting on my 3010 lately.... I had to send my first 3010 back to Epson because the ghosting was so bad.... After reading the review i was sold on the 3020... I watch a lot of 3D and i am glad Epson addressed the problems the 3D had on the 3010..... I will now watch all my 3D movies over with 40,000:1 contrast ratio i am sure i will see a big improvement....

My 3020 and 106" screen from Visual Apex are scheduled to arrive this Friday or Saturday....

I hope to spend my Sunday putting everything together....and firing it up.

I'll post pictures and my thoughts once I get it all running.
Really looking forward to your impressions of this projector. I am also tempted by the VA bundle but for the 135" screen.

I played around with the settings a bit more last night. Previously, being a new projector guy, I assumed the 3D brightness setting was for the projector and set it at the default (High). Turns out it has more to do with the glasses? I set them down to Low (as suggested in the projector central review) and cross-talk is gone, completely. Really solid 3D. So excited to learn this. This is really an amazing projector for the money.

I keep mind at medium. And still at even the lowest setting. In my opinion it is still brighter then the AE7000. Which boasts incredible 3D and double the cost.

Does this setting adjust the amount of time the shutter is left open on the glasses? Is this how it is able to adjust the amount of visible cross-talk?
This should become the official 3020 owner's thread.

I was going to do 3 things from the Projector Central Review:

1) adjust the color slightly, they claim its almost a perfect 6500k but made just a few tweaks;

2) try switching gamma to 2.4 for completely dark theater environment for better blacks; and

3) adjusting glasses brightness to low to eliminate any crosstalk.

I think those were the 3 tweaks we should all be looking at.

But my question is this, what exactly does changing the brightness setting for 3d do? I can only imagine it either dims/changes the 3d image on the screen somehow.....or.....sends a different signal to the glasses to shutter more quickly/slowly etc....(unlikely?)

Great news that low setting completely eliminates crosstalk...but, are we sacraficing a bit of brightness (i.e. going from high setting to low) to eliminate crosstalk?

May not matter, this projector has TONS of brightness to spare...???

Exciting stuff!!!!!!!!!

1) I adjusted the color last night. Was a little confused as the review says the default is at 7000k but mine was a default at 6500k. I changed mine to 7000k and made their adjustments (they are so subtle you'd really never notice)
2) I switched the gamma to 2.4 as well since I watch with no ambient light at all.
3) I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure the brightness setting does tweak the glasses somehow and not the projector output. When I made the change the glasses seemed to re-sync in the process. It did dim the image a bit but since I'm pushing the projector with a 130" image my setup is more sensitive to light changes.
so does the switch to 2.4 gamma improve the blacks, in a dark environment?

I'm not worried about the brightness on the 3d, because this projector is very bright, plus I'm rolling with a 106" screen (thought about 120" but I'm only sitting about 12-13' away and that is just too big.

Doompatrol or anyone who owns this pj, i have two questions:

How's input lag? i'll do alot of gaming so it's an important matter... the review from projectorcentral says with fast image process it's around 60ms, can you test it?
And when you power it off, can you post the exact time it keeps the fan running to cooldown the bulb?

Thanks.

I wouldn't even know how to test for input lag. I don't do much gaming anymore so it isn't something I was worried about. I'd take the projector central review at it's word. If 60ms is too slow then it might not be the projector for you. Interestingly the fan shuts down right when you turn it off. At least in the Cinema / Eco mode I always run it at. According to the instructions it is even safe to unplug it as soon as you turn it off.

Just ordered mine from VA. It will be my first projector. I am excited to say that least. I bought my screen 3 years ago - had some life changes - and then finally got around to doing this.
Excited

Hey guys i got my 3020 today and it is awesome..... I was wondering if you have tried the added Depth feature yet ? I have tried it and it really does adds a lot more depth but you do get more ghosting. Also you do loose some screen size when you use this feature. Overall the 3020 is a big step up from the 3010 and there are a bunch of added features mostly aimed at the 3D. Having 40,000:1 contrast ratio with the auto iris in 3D makes it look so much better than last years unit which had a 3D contrast of 1,600:1 and no iris in 3D...... Also the 2D to 3D conversion feature is amazing biggrin.gif I tried a few movie and they looked great in 3D. The Pixar movie looked incredible converted..... What a great feature to have.... Now i can watch all my Blu-rays in 3D
