Avatar 3D Blu-ray Now Available to General Public

After two years of being available only to consumers purchasing select products, the 3D version of Avatar is now available to the general public.

For those that already own the no-frills single disc only edition that has been associated with the purchase of Panasonic products up to this point, the general release is an expanded two-disc Blu-ray 3D Collector's Edition (both the 2D and 3D theatrical versions of the film will be accessible on the Blu-ray disc and, of course, the included DVD is 2D only) with newly created packaging.

Unfortunately, other than the inclusion of the both the 2D and 3D version on a single Blu-ray Disc, as well as a separate DVD disc version, there are no extra bonus features included in this disc set - so the need to "double dip" may not be necessary if you already have a copy of the Panasonic release in combination with any previous 2D Blu-ray or DVD release.

On the other hand, if you own a 3D TV and 3D Blu-ray Disc player and haven't been able to secure a copy of the Panasonic version, and just own the previous 2D Blu-ray standard and extended cut editions, this is your chance to finally get a copy of Avatar the way it is meant to be seen.

Worth picking up?

Hells yes, it's worth it. Buying that elusive little morsel of 3D goodness is the first thing I'm doing tomorrow.

I've got the same Q "worth picking up?".
Well, I do believe it's actually a wonderful movie and I love it though.smile.gif

Having own the 3-disc special edition and the Panasonic 3D disc, I honestly don't think it's worth picking it up. If I didn't sign a no-sale clause with Panasonic, I'd sell it on eBay 2 years ago.

Not buying, holding out for extended 3D version.

Will wait for the inevitable price drop. biggrin.gif

My Regular 2D Avatar package, also included the Extended Version! Why would I now shell out the monies for the NON-Extended Version?
I just put the 2D Extended Version in, and set my LG 55LV9500 to upconvert to 3D. Looked pretty good to me!
I suppose the Extended 3D Version will come out in time to be a Christmas Stocking Stuffer? Not that far off to wait.

My two cents: I own the Panasonic promo 3D disc and think it is absolutely amazing. I've demoed it to some folks at different times to show them my new 60" Elite and they were stunned at how good it looked. Of course, this matters little if you're not a fan of the movie smile.gif

This might be my plan too.

Same here, holding out for the Extended 3D version. Already have the theatrical 3D version.

For only $24, it was well worth it for me. I preordered it and am waiting for UPS to drop it off at my house now.

I used a gift card that was given to me. I was only out $1.80 from my wallet. I bought the first 2D theatrical version back when it came out. I didn't have 3D components at the time so it wasn't an issue. I doubt an extended 3D version will come very soon or be the last word as far as this movie is concerned. Just as soon as the sequel hits theaters, there will be a Director's Ultimate, Infinite Extended Edition with DTS Neo:X 11.1 and 4K 3D. Oh, you laugh now.... Anyway, I'm only into this movie for about $25, so far. That ain't bad. Don't even ask me how much George Lucas has taken me for....

Jeeeezus! I've been on the fence on getting this, having waited sooooooo friggin long for it. Back when it first came out, I didn't own a BD player and I did not get the bare-bones movie-only DVD. I was one of the few who LOVED this movie (was able to see it twice in breathtaking IMAX 3D) when it first came out and still waited for the 3-disc collector's ed, which I also got on DVD since I still hadn't gotten into Blu. I loved that version as well, but have lost interest in it since I got my 3D HDTV and 3D BD player last Xmas... I keep wanting (badly, I should say) my own 3D Blu-ray copy (curse you, Panasonic!!!). My problem now was whether or not to get this theatrical cut or wait even loooooonger to get an extended 3D cut. I do feel cheated for not having the extended cut included in this "new" deal (the movie came out, what, THREE GODDAMNED YEARS AGO in theaters?), but I just cannot see myself waiting any longer... Gots to have it ... NOW!!!!! It would make the perfect addition, for the time being... rolleyes.gif

Avatar 3D couldnt come at a better time now that I have a Sony 3D tv. My wife and I caught a glimpse of Avatar 3D when Sears were running a promo of it on a Panasonic Plasma and it was beautiful. Cant wait to get my hands on this baby.

Like others, I have not seen this in 3D since it's theatrical release. Yesterday I managed to pop in the 3DBD and checked out a couple of scenes. Wow is all I can say and I cannot wait to watch this in it's entirety this weekend!

Yeah, it looks like this will be my first and hopefully only quad-dip purchase. Bought the theatrical on Blu-Ray, then the Extended, now the 3d (like an idiot I thought this would be the extended edition) and of course I'll have to spring for the Extended 3d edition when it comes out.... Also saw it twice at the IMAX so i'm hoping my HW30 will come close.

Someone knows if Avatar 3D Panasonic exclusive version is different than Amazon $19.99 version?

Same disc, same MVC transfer, different cover and silk screen. That's all. The only thing that could be different is if they locked out 2D playback on the retail 3D version. The Panny promo version had the option to view it in 2D (the main H.264 stream) or 3D (utilizing the H.264 main stream and MVC substream to create the left eye/right eye views).
