Kelly's Heroes

Question: In the scene where they are sneaking into the town with the bank, everyone is carrying Jerry cans. But they only appear in that one scene. They are never discussed before that and never used after that. I'm presuming that the script was changed after shooting that scene, but can't help wondering what was up there.

That's it!

Jerry cans: I never noticed that. I'm always listening to Lalo Schifrin's score in that scene.

The cans may have been a plot element left on the editing floor.

Solaris, the Soderbergh/Clooney remake, and not the vastly superior Tartovsky original.

The "chapter" titles are all from Raymond Chandler books.

I didn't notice until watching it again, but the imagery is pretty nice in this one:

Correct - Solaris (2002). Directed by Steven Soderbergh and produced by James Cameron.

Perhaps the first time George Clooney donned a spacesuit but not the last. It was also the first film where I really noticed the great actress Viola Davis. I like this movie and recently found the HDX version on VUDU (also available on iTunes) and purchased it. It's a noticeable upgrade over the DVD although still short of what it should look and sound like on Blu-ray (no announcement yet). Based on a 1961 novel by Stanisław Lem it was made into a Russian TV film in 1968 which was followed by Tartovsky's version in 1972. I watched the 1972 version on Hulu+ in the Criterion film section. I thought it was interesting but not my preferred version, the core ideas are the same but executed differently. Roger Ebert's 2002 review of Solaris pretty closely reflects how I feel about the two films. I'm also a big fan of the Cliff Martinez score.

I saw the Tartovsky version first and was thoroughly impressed by it. I thought the Soderbergh version was commendable, but preferred Tartovsky.

I did the VUDU "Disc to Digital" upgrade from DVD on this movie because there's no sign of a Blu-ray. I was disappointed to discover that the soundtrack on VUDU is only stereo 2.0. The DVD has a 5.1 mix.

Yes, you're correct - stereo sound. A fact I didn't realize right away since my Denon defaults to the DTS Neo: 6 simulated surround when fed a stereo signal. Hope I didn't mislead anyone. The iTunes HD version is also stereo.

I was informed by VUDU that if and when the Solaris Blu-ray makes an appearance the movie will be upgraded automatically in your account.
