I prefer the original (that's not to say I don't like Dredd 2012), but perhaps the new movie will prompt a decent dual release, same as TRON etc.

I wish the folks who made the new version had the budget and resources afforded the original film. 2012 Dredd was a well-made film that was sufficiently true to its source material (far moreso than the Stallone vehicle) but it was visibly dragged down but its low budget. I still think its worth a purchase and will get the 3D version when it is released.

LOL - the producers are probably very thankfull that they only spent $50 million to make this movie. Dredd may just be the biggest bomb of 2012

There is more to producing a film besides the film's budget - that is the cost to put it "in the can." Then you have your marketing, distribution and print costs which were probably another $50 million.

So no - it isn't going to "make that back on video."

Oh I think it will, John Carter did in the end turn a profit.
They said they need 60m to make a sequel and they know a lot more than you, but thanks for trolling the thread it was neat.

No it didn't. Disney took a $200 million writeoff on John Carter. That means a loss.

Guess some here are very sensitive that Dredd may be looked at as the biggest bomb in 2012. rolleyes.gif

A film's box office performance isn't necessarily an indicator of its quality. I'll take one Dredd over ten Twilights, Hunger Games or similar pieces of drek.

The filmmakers were able to do a lot with a little, relatively speaking, and I for one would have liked to see what they could do with more resources at their disposal. Hard "R" movies like Dredd always have an uphill battle, especially when they don't have any recognizable names attached, and it was pretty obvious from the start that Dredd would flame out quickly. It will do better on home video (which quite honestly is what I think Lionsgate was shooting for all along) but I don't think we'll be seeing any followups.

No you are just poorly informed on how movies work its not all about box office.
Its about dvd sales and tv rights, they can make 50m plus on tv alone world wide, and Carter made well over its budget.
But I guess we all feel much better now You spent time trying to derail the thread.

Lets look at girl with The Dragon tattoo for a second.
A massive bomb by your metric, but sony are moving ahead with the sequel, why if it was a bomb would they do that?
Just because north America does not see R rated moves In cinemas any more, Does not mean the rest if the world does not.
Plus streaming rights, cable rights, tv rights, dvd sales, bluray sales.
All those things make millions, sometimes multiple hundreds of millions.

Thanks for sharing. I wanted to but never did get the chance to see this. Good reviews on amazon, though. Really looking forward to making a blind 3D buy. I'm a fan of graphic novel movies, but not of reading comics--if that makes any sense! Love Constantine, Vendetta, Watchmen, 300, the Dark Knight trilogy (mega-love that alone!), Perdition, etc etc etc. How would you say this Dredd compares against those, would you say? Thanks in advance! cool.gif

Personally its the truest comic book to film translation as far as feel goes, but I rate it below Perdition Scott Pilgrim Rocketeer History of Violence and Batman 89.
But they were iconic

One of my favourite films this year. Saw it twice at the Cinemas and will definetly pick it up on Blu-Ray. Hell if I was a Billionaire I would give the producers another 50 mill to make a sequel for me biggrin.gif

i enjoyed it, but for those of you looking to purchase it in 3D... i'm not saying not to purchase it in 3D, but i saw it in 3D and IMHO, wasn't completely impressed with the 3D aspect of the movie

According to this site http://realorfake3d.com/ it was filmed in 3D... Like i said, to me, there were only a couple of instances the 3D was noticeable.

Don't be fooled, "conversions" these days are doing a heck of a job ... some consider it even better in some cases. And besides, ALL native 3D pictures these days have to include conversion portions to add special effects, or don't they?
