I looked up what they had listed on the web site, says the core is poplar. I'd imagine that's pretty soft, eh?

Small world! I get mine at Rings End in Branford....little bit of a hike from Hartford. They have a bunch of locations, but looks like they are all toward NY, and nothing really in the Northern part of the state.

do you find a need for 3/4 ply in any of your designs?
In general, is there any practical advantage in using 3/4 instead of 1/2 ply for large enclosures if weight is not a driving factor?

Only saving the added labor of using braces. That's why manufacturers use bracing sparingly, labor costs more than thicker materials do.
