Sony HW50 / BenQ W7000 / Epson 5020 / JVC RS55 / JVC RS 46 / JVC RS4810 / JVC RS56 Mini-shootout... - Page 58

I finally broke down and went through with my pre-order on the HW50 today and hopefully I'll see it sometime around the end of the week. Going from an RS45 to an HW50 will be interesting. I'm confident that the 3D will be a nice upgrade. Hopefully 2D will be close enough that I'll be happy. I'll post some brief thoughts later after I've had some time to view.

At least waiting will yield me an HW50 with less whining noise in 3D. smile.gif

A message from a dealer in Germany:
http://www.grobi-shop.tv/showpost.php?id=2172
We have just received the information that the cause of the 3D rendering problem in the currently shipped X 35 series was found.
The solution is a software update, but that the customer can not be performed. This is no bad faith on the part of JVC but purely for technical reasons. It must be removed for the update of the cover and it takes a specially modified cable.
We will inform our customers who have had their device in the last days, in the course of the day and then inform you to arrange for a pickup.
The software update is the JVC service can perform from the middle of next week.
We will deliver our stock equipment with the new software version also will soon be back.
We are at your disposal for further information.
Your team Grobi

Any problem with the 4810?

Are you keeping your 45 as well

So long as the HW50 is good enough in 2D the RS45 will go up for sale. If not I'll have some head scratching to do but I don't even want that thought to enter my mind. smile.gif

From what I've read, it only affects the X35. We have to wait until Monday for some more info from JVC.
Eh hopefully early Monday we will have word. I won't even open mine when it comes Tuesday if that is the case

Kevin - I thought MIB 3D had some decent 3D, I just personally didn't like the movie. Resident Evil Retribution 3D is a little more to my liking. cool.gif

Had to watch resident evil in 2D, family doesn't want to watch 3D anymore. Guess I'll be watching it by myself

Here is the new lamp in the RS46 vs. the original lamp in the RS55. The flapper did not make it into this lamp, but the overall housing looks identical.

New lamp is on the left in the photos.

Respect. I enjoyed it quite a bit but there some pretty harsh dark ghosting scenes. wink.gif

In terms of your other post this is the second time I'm hearing about the 4k whine in this shootout link, so I'd be interested in your take on the X55. As well I don't know if you saw the other link in your post from Denmark? where they had their own "Jason shoot out"! ==> here Pretty interesting if you can get by the translation issues!

And is it just me or do you see a much different coloring of the internal glass on the new bulb (the RS55 looks almost yellowish??

this is interesting... the opening of the lamp inlet is noticeably larger on the RS46 vs the RS55. You can see the metal is bent on the RS55 and the overall hole is small. In addition which can't be seen in the photo, It looks like the RS46 has a beefier squirrel cage fan vs the RS55.

I am half tempted to bend that metal back a 1/2 inch or so for better airflow. I have been running my lamp @ high altitude since new and it's performing very well so far, but we're only looking @ under 200 hours on the projector/lamp.

Careful on that temptation... are you sure the other side of the bend doesn't feed air somewhere else??

looking closer at both projectors, I don't think so. it's definitely an 'inlet' supply of air to the lamp, since you can see the exhaust fan behind it that blows hot air out the front of the case. (this looks to be the same on both models)

Without taking both models apart, I can still see the squirrel cage on the RS46 is noticeably larger. This has to be part of the reason for the better lamp life and louder sound in high lamp.

Could be how they tempured the sound on the RS55? Would be interesting to try (on yours I mean!). tongue.gif

Any way to tell the manufacture of the new lamp compared to the 55?

This is my other project i'm working on. My 3 year old raid is starting to lose drives too often, it's time to replace it.

I'm going with 8 of the 3TB WD red drives, raid 6 for ~18 TB. I like the Areca 1223 8 port SAS raid cards, it's a little expensive but they are solid cards. It has out of band notifications, so I'll get an email if a drive goes offline. very cool..!

Zombie send me a pm on a way to start a system like that . I don't need 8 3tb drives though lol. I would like to have something easy to navigate so when the old lady's parents come over they can easily pick a movie they want to see.

I run two of these boxes. They are a much cheaper solution. The only draw back is they take up more room compared to a single PC tower.

They connect to your PC via a 2 port eSata card which does port multiplication. For simple storage it's all you really need. The card supplied does various forms of RAID but I choose to run them in a JBOD configuration for ease of use and setup.

I have a wd live which I connect a regular external hard drive up to. Is there a reason people run somethingi me that instead of using a streamer. Might want to pm the answer so we don't get off topic

you still need a PC to run those drives, this setup is a full PC + server class, hardware accelerated raid + 10 drive bays of storage.

i've dealt enough with low end solutions, i'm not taking any chances with 18TB of data this time.

This is what I use for streaming 2D and 3D BD's.

I was think about making a shelf for my back wall for my r46. I would use a solid piece of oak wood. Then build two 2x4 arms coming off of that and placing a piece of black glass on top of the two arms. When making my shelf anything g I should MAKE sure of.?

it's just a reflection from the camera angle, they both look clear.

thanks for the link, there is good info in that mini-shootout. They mention something about the X35 firmware:

"3D display with instantaneous firmware ghosting-afflicted"

overall it seems their favorites were the HW50 and X55.

Pretty good shootouts but not as in depth as yours zombie

I'll calibrate the RS46 sometime tomorrow, for tonight i'm watching some of my favorite content to see how it looks out of the box.

Buddy Guy is looking pretty good @ -11 on the iris with high lamp. The convergence and focus on this particular copy is excellent.

regarding flicker, maybe Epson is driving the panels differently. Overall though, I think the HW50's 3D BD performance is very good, especially after a calibration through the glasses.

Zombie buddy i read that comment in avforums, is this right?
