The Coffin Build - Page 12

I don't think you're too much of a guinea pig. The UM drivers are out there - just not the 18 yet I guess. I've got a couple of the 15s in the basement right now - still not fired up though.

The only thing I know for sure - is that you'll mess something up if you get ahead of yourself. (Ask me how I know... 'course if you're following my build you probably know.) Wait until you have everything on hand before you start cutting.

The design looks fine - obviously you've made your decision about the direction the driver faces - so if you're cool, I'm cool, ya know? Do you worry that anything on the shelves will rattle? I worry for you, if you don't. smile.gif

Yeah....................you are right.

In the excitement of ordering the drivers, I went to town..................................I don't think shelving there is a good idea. wink.gif

I have the veneer coming this week and wont have the drivers until mid February at best. Lots to mull over........that's for sure. Would be nice to use time during Christmas to begin building, but I agree with you Fred.............patience is the greatest virtue............ie. wait until all components are present.

I've been following your thread and know about your cut out issue and finishing.........................................I'm so methodical............I'll adhere to your recommendation and wait until all products are in hand. There is no way I'm cutting BB until I'm absolutely firm on dimensions..............that material is expensive and scrap is not an option. biggrin.gif

Driver direction with regard to end tables is my only option.................at least if I want to use all the same drivers besides the S2. Probably look into a metal screen painted flat black to protect the drivers. In my build design, the 10" Triad drivers were firing from bottom end of column which aligns with first row seating. Having drivers firing away from seating may give better overall room response. I'm very, very close to having all drivers being implemented at all wall mid-lines. Should be able to dial in..................keeping fingers crossed. biggrin.gif

Thanks Fred for knocking me back to reality with suggestions...............biggrin.gif

Well, I've pre-ordered 4 Dayton 18" Ultramax drivers and have until the end of January 2014 to cancel................

On that note, TMcG has held the new SI-24" driver in his hands putting 4000 watts in free air to the test! eek.gif

My first thought which came to mind..........................well, was this: eek.gif

Quite the work out!!!

Dual SI 24"? We'll see what TMcG's has to say concerning his visit to SI!!! biggrin.gif

Thought groaning and grunting was manly? wink.gif

I must confess............haven't lifted weights in 7 or more years......................my pyramid shoulders have now drooped to my "Middle Earth" section!!!! biggrin.gif

Glad you found my humor TMcG.....................................my wife has stated many times, "You're not as funny as you may think!" biggrin.gif

Just ordered two flat packs through Erich at DIYsoundgroup.com and plan to begin building cabinets as soon as they arrive............... next week will pick up 1 inch 18 ply BB for end table sub build. . Knotty Alder veneer should be arriving next week too...............

Christmas break will be filled with glue, clamps, sanding, sealing...............painting etc. I was absolutely terrible about documenting my build due to time constraints and plan to document this subwoofer build hoping others may find activity doable and worth their effort. I've spend many hours researching/learning best practices for implementing ULF for my room and have come across a multitude of ideas and concepts which are promising. DIY from a practical sense is the only alternative I have due to very specific requirements for cabinet size and ULF goals.

With that in mind.............in addition, I enjoy using my hands and miss those long days I spent building my dedicated room.................................actually, as college football comes to an end..........I need something to keep me busy! biggrin.gif

Was waiting on TMcG to document specifics regarding his visit to Stereo Integrity, but finally came to conclusion building four more 18" subs would suffice helping me attain ULF goals. I did mulled over possibilities building boxes for a pair of SI-24 inch drivers......................but felt "Stealth" was a better alternative ie. seating can hide two drivers in rear and I could use same driver for my end tables. Integration with likewise multiple drivers became THE major point for final decision. I also squashed the idea of using a single dual opposed box in rear............this decision was difficult but was made due to more flexibility taming modes with two smaller cabinets .

On a final note.............. I must confess.................................2 SI-24 inch drivers seemed really, really appealing!!!! eek.gif

Sorry for the gratuitous post......................

If you've already purchased the Dayton Ultimax 18" before Black Friday...................well, called Parts Express and they honored today's price discount lowering invoice by $100.

For a dime, well worth the call! wink.gif

First snow in Oregon.................at least in our neck of the woods. Cold........in the twenties! Next week supposed to be close to single digits! eek.gif

Just a boring day of Christmas decorations.....................wife's goal to at least get started. Spotted a 15 ft Christmas tree on our timber properties which we will be cutting down and placing near fireplace. Thought I'd show a few pictures as Christmas is a big deal in our home............ie. "Jesus is the Reason for the Season!" wink.gif

BTW, subwoofer system is sorted out.........................ordered a Peavey ipr2 7500 which I'll have next week and should have all sub cab materials for building around same time too. 4 more 18" drivers are going into room for a grand total of 6................will document thoroughly how construction goes. I have two months to sort out drivers..................as of now, I have 4 Dayton Ultimax 18 inch drivers pre-ordered but won't be here until first of February. Sometimes I can be impatient...................maybe 4 UXL-18's might replace the Daytons if I can get them sooner......................

Merry Christmas to all! biggrin.gif

Thanks TMcG............

Now don't go AWOL on me in the next few months.....................I'm working on helping my wife select a one room automation solution for theater room to help ease her mind. So far she refuses to turn on anything in room without my help! Don't know if that's a good or bad thing? confused.gif

We've begun looking at your suggestions for room control and will make HER select GI which hopefully, will ease her mind. Women.....................rolleyes.gif

I'm good with anything............biggrin.gif

I'm really looking forward to the clear skies with a high of 25 degrees and a low of 9 degrees! eek.gif

Reason why I mentioned temperatures, last night woke up several times due to very loud pops.....................well, our Australian Cypress seems to not like the cold weather! 8-10 very, very loud pops last night due to hardwood floor shrinkage............................thanks to my Son who forced me to watch "Conjuring" with him last night too...................well, the sounds were unnerving to say the least. mad.gif Hated that movie!

Thought I'd send out a little warning to my AV friend, Roger Dressler...........................STAY INSIDE!!!

Roger lives in Bend, Oregon and Bend will see a scorching 8 F with lows at minus 11 F. Add insult to injury...............poor guy now has to deal with sever wind chill warning! eek.gifeek.gifeek.gifeek.gif

Stay safe Roger......................wink.gif

Just a little humor............not to insult! biggrin.gif

No whining...eek.gif The price you pay for living in Oregon!

We've had a major cold snap here, too...it got down to 30 deg. couple nights ago. cool.gif

It's 10 degrees and sunny. Perfect for the holiday mood. We normally get more snow on this side of the Cascades, so I'll be shoveling it pretty soon.

Thanks for the photo Roger! I love the Bend/Redmond area.........................matter of fact, we had 5 acres in Sisters set aside for our retirement home but sold it before prices skyrocketed 16-17 years ago. Biggest regret of my life!

Problems was/is.................the Boss wanted to stay close to her family..............and felt the area was a little too isolated. Don't know where she got that idea from..........heck, she was born and raised in isolation!!!!!

In reality, Bend/Redmond has become a thriving metropolis! biggrin.gif

BTW, Whistler and Banff are two of my favorite places to visit...............the third being Jackson Hole! Am thinking of rafting the Canadian Yukon this Summer..............if my wife doesn't want to, I know one of her brothers will! cool.gif

If you ever need to go to northern Sweden during winter, you can 'combine' it.

Discovery Channel did an hour show I believe on this establishment! Would be very interesting to experience the hotel.....................and to visit your beautiful country. But due to lack of daylight in winter, I'll wait til Summer............. biggrin.gif

Great news from diysoundgroup.com........................

FED EX tracking number has been issued ....................will have flat packs in hand soon! Will document construction of boxes ....................a bummer I have to wait for drivers which has been moved back to Feb 14th.................

Really contemplating cancelling order from Parts Express and ordering 4 UXL-18's if drivers can arrive sometime around Christmas..........................double the cost, but double the low end output.............hmmmmmmmm

Upgraditis has begun! smile.gif I took a weed eater back once before I ever opened it because I realized there was one model up from the one I bought. I just couldn't stand knowing I didn't get the better one. I feel for you with your sub decisions, but I'm clearly not the one to offer feedback on this particular choice smile.gif

USC is playing Fresno St, right? Any predictions on the game? You guys have had a heck of a year. Hopefully the most recent coaching change will settle everything down, and you guys can get back to just playing football. It's never good for a team when the headlines are dominated by off the field stuff.

Thanks......................

I miss John Robinson.............................and Saint Pete for that matter! Sark was a hire to bring back "The Carroll" days...............but that's not going to happen. Kiffin= Sark,..............but at least Sark is more personable. Fresno State will be a good game but will have to miss due to being out of country.

Yeah, I'm good with the UM-18's but the ship date keeps moving back.....................figured if the UXL-18 is available, maybe that might be a better move. I think 4 more 18" drivers should be the ticket...........................biggrin.gif

Updated my front opening page with new photos of home/theater room................

After 6 months have really enjoyed theater room.................the room gets used everyday. Even my wife is getting on my case to get automation done so she can learn how to operate all the equipment. rolleyes.gif

Hopefully, by February I'll have all subs built and in place.............................. coming this June, will begin building as noted earlier coffer ceiling all in rustic Knotty Alder.................................and I might add, have my Trinnov TEQ 12 in place!!!

When I built the room, I knew time was going to be my enemy...........so figured at a later date I would begin building ceiling coffers To complete room as intended, I wanted to make sure I was not rushed and pay close attention to details. wink.gif The ceiling was constructed with clips and channels 16" on center, while the walls were at 24" on center. I've placed additional supporting channels in ceiling for the coffers along with additional clips for added weight. I never planned on star ceilings since I much prefer wood. biggrin.gif

I subscribe to the notion, "A theater is never done". wink.gif

Received one of two packages today......................

Will start putting sub boxes together with Kreg jig and glue using Tight Bond II....................same application and method used on putting together my speaker columns. Hopefully, will start in tomorrow night when I receive the 2nd package from FED EX via. diysoundgroup.com.

If I use the UM-18 drivers as pre-ordered, I'll have to find a way to router first baffle.................the SI-18 has measurement of 16.7 inches but the UM-18 is spec-ed at 17 inches. How much I have to work that first layer baffle...............we shall see. The second layer for baffle is perfect......................both the SI-18 and UM-18 have 18.5 inch overall diameter.

Good news, the ranch has a complete shop I can work in....................bad news, I have to travel 25 miles to get there...........................don't have a lot of time as I leave country for Christmas Break.

The flat pack was well prepared for shipment......................no damage from what I can see, but have not removed all items to check. Gotta love all the peanuts.......................might be used for practical joke on Son.........................he deserves it!! wink.gif

Do us both a favor and don't do any cutting until you have drivers in hand and have measured twice. (I know I told you that already)

Yes you did...........................and I did see your thread concerning this matter.....................

Plan to put the box together and deal with first baffle once I have the drivers in hand. It might be the case no more cutting will be needed............................if not, I'll make a jig to widen the first baffle piece to needed diameter..............

Good news is..................overall diameter of the SI and UM are exactly the same...............keeping fingers crossed!

Thanks for reminding me............................
