I am an Optimum customer with an SA 8300 HD DVR cable box in my living room. I have had the same problem since August 20, 2013. I was up late and an EBS test came on, throwing my audio receiver (which gets an optical cable feed from the 8300) from Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound to "PCM 2.0", which is basic digital stereo audio. In 2006 when this first happened to me, I called Cablevision (Optimum) and a service rep told me to go to the audio section of their cable box menu and switch the audio source back from HDMI to Dolby Digital and that fixed the problem.
Well now their new menu does not include this feature so there is no way to switch my audio back to 5.1 surround after an EBS test. I called Optimum and they are well aware of it. I'm just a middle class guy from Yonkers but Optimum services the whole of Westchester county, not to mention parts of Long Island and New Jersey. And Westchester is now the richest county in America. So the people in Bronxville, Scarsdale, Bedford Hills, Mount Kisco, Chappaqua and a number of other rich towns with customers with their $10,000 stereos and a many cable boxes throughout their mansions have been calling in and making a very big noise. So I called Cablevision today 9/5/13 and mentioned the fact that Google brought up many complaint sites with Optimum customers with this same audio problem going back far longer. The rep said the menu fix is in the testing phase. Once the upgrade is sent out to all cable customer DVR boxes, there would be an Optimum newsletter going out "very soon" to all customers announcing the addition of this (HDMI/Dolby Digital) audio feature being added to their new software menu, allowing customers to be able to switch their audio back to Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround. I guess money talks.
