Acoustically Transparent Screens, (AT), latest options?

Hello,

I am thinking of moving to a larger screen for my dedicated HT room, from 104" to something closer to 110"-120"

The problem is I am limited on the sides of the screen... currently I have tower speakers on the sides, and basically the walls are limiting my ability to go beyond my current setup. So I am thinking of buying an AT screen so I can go wider and place the speakers behind.

I haven't researched for years this option, so wonder what there is today aside from the SMX line . I am on a reasonably tight budget. Would like to spend no more than $700 or so. is this possible? Also is moire an issue of the past?

Definitely check our Seymour Screens. Good bang for your buck. SMX is def. expensive. Other options would be Carada or Stewart screens.

you can take a look at the A4K material. Just won the CEPro 2012 BEST Award-Projection screen.

I see no AT screens there even close to $700. Am I missing something?

A seymour av (the cheapest option mentioned) in the size you want will cost around 2x your stated budget of $700.

SMX is even more, Stewart is a lot more and Carada doesn't make AT screens.

4k (unnecessary unless you sit like only 8 feet from the screen) material will be over 700 just for the fabric.

If you are limited to 700 dollars, your only real option besides DIY is to have Jamestown Screens make you a screen and ask them to use seymour AT fabric. They will order it from seymour and cut it to size for your frame. You will need to assemble it but it is not hard - follow the instructions carefully, especially when stretching the fabric over the frame.

Found this one within my budget...

ER120WH1-A1080P2 (google this, it is an Elite screen)

I had read a few reviews on avs about Elite AT screens and some people complained of moire and streaks on the screen.

I think Elite has a new 1080p AT material that has a tighter weave so maybe that is no longer an issue.

I see Elite has a new AT material as you say. However only available in 2.35:1 format.

Depends on what type of unit you are looking for. On certain models, it is only available in 2.35 but if you are looking for a regular fixed frame, look into the Peregrine series. It is offered in 2.35 and also 16:9 in numerous sizes. You also have the option of purchasing A4K material only.

X2. If you want to stay on the <$700 budget but keep a reference quality image, then Jamestown is the way to go. Just this weekend I visited "nebrunner"'s incredible home theater in Omaha and it was textbook-perfect quality and performance, yet he kept within his budget by not only doing a lot of DIY but also using Jamestown for the screen frame. Jamestown makes a great product without sacrificing quality on what you'll be watching - the screen layer.

Cheers,
Chris

That post is for a Seymour XD screen, not Elite. Right?

Correct that seymour av doesn't have a moire problem. I have a seymour AT fabric screen and no issues there. My post was regarding moire on an Elite screen.

Either get some Seymour XD fabric and make a screen yourself or do what was suggested earlier and have Jamestown use the fabric and make you a screen. Either will probably come out similar in price.

I'm worried that more than a few people on that thread stated that they can see the XD weave pattern as far as 12 feet, some say even more. (on white portions of the screen). I'm kind of eagle eyed so I think I may be amongst those that notice and would be bothered by it.

Then you are definitely a candidate for a 4K screen... And the substantial increase in greenbacks required to join that club! wink.gif

that's pretty brutal. cannot wait for the "measurements and side-by-side screen shots".
