"Mark All Forums Read" is not functioning

I just used it in the test forum and it worked perfectly. It even asked if I meant just that area or ALL areas.

After choosing just that area, they are all marked read.

If you select "This forum", it will indeed mark the posts "read". If you select "All forums" it will only mark the one you are on, not all of them.

I'm running Firefox 12.0 if that makes a difference.

Same problem over at "The Home Theater Forum" and both sites were updated recently.

Please do not "bump" a thread. It does not help me get the issue resolved any quicker. I checked on this ticket and it seems that we will be pushing a live fix sometime today or tomorrow. Thanks for being patient!

It has been two days but it appears the fix that HuddlerStef refers to has not been implemented? (Two weeks since the thread started.) I find this a major annoyance--do we have an ETA for a solution?

My name is Stephanie. The status on this issue is that we had to push back this fix to a different release due to prioritization of other outstanding issues. I understand that this is an inconvenience to you, and for that, I apologize. I do not control when these fixes go live but I hope that my timely response is sufficient.

Actually, I'd be happy if AVS worked the same as some other forums--mark everything read after I leave.

To be more specific, I check several sites each day; scanning several sub-forums in each for topics of interest or new postings in topics I'm following. On a couple of sites, all unread messages are marked read after I finish--such that, the next day, only topics with new postings are indicated as such. On a couple others, I have to click a control to mark everything read just before I leave. Only AVS requires me to click Mark All Read on each sub-forum before leaving that sub-forum. I'd prefer the first behaviour but the second is not a great inconvenience. The current AVS behaviour is a pain.

What happens when you ckick this:

Not by design, but due to hardware and software limitations. We didn't want it to work like that, but we had no choice. Now you can pick up where you left off no matter how many devices you use.

We have the button at the top of the front page for those folks.

And one of the top 10 complaintes we had on the VB software was that IT WOULD MARK ALL THREDS AS READ after X amount of time and that upset a lot of people for they would not pick up where they left off. At least now you have the option to clear them or not. To each their own, but this is really a first I have heard of someone wanting it to auto clear in all the years I have run the site. It was always the other way around..."It does remember where I left off and all the threads reset.".

But yes, their is a bug that when you are in a forum and select to mark ALL FORUMS read and it ends up just doing that forum you are in. So thanks for finding that. Now to only get it fixed.

Depends on how you use the forum--I come in, look for topics of interest, read them and that's it for the day. For my use case, auto-marking everything read was perfect. I didn't scream and yell when that changed...but I did notice and I didn't like it.

I'm OK if the auto-mark behaviour isn't possible. It would be really nice if the available button would just do what it says it is doing!

Is the button on the top of the front page not working for you?

I don't want to click it myself as I would never want to mark the entire site as read, unless I actually read it all.

Last I checked, it behaved as described in post #3 in this thread. Are you saying that it should be fixed now?

Not the button discussed in post 3, but post 14.

But the post #3 issue was found and will be rolled out in an upcoming release. (I do think this week if I recall.) It is either that or I am thinking about another issue that was fixed.

I liked it working that way, because it meant I didn't have to bother looking at all the threads I didn't want to look at during my previous visit. I just got to see what's new each visit.

Any way this could be some sort of per-user setting?

It would be way down on the list seeing you can mark them all read currently if you wanted at any time. By forum or entire site.

We have people on the site that are on it longer than the time out, like they leave the window open and go get coffee or something and then come back only on the next page refresh have everything unflagged. It was really one of the top complaints.

So it appears the button on the AVS forum page works differently from all other forum pages? I get the following:



Do you think it is a good design that what appears to be the same control does different things in different contexts? Why doesn't the button say "Mark All Forums Read" if that is what it actually does? On other pages, perhaps it should say "Mark This/All Forums Read" since it offers a choice.

BTW, I never spend any time on the AVS forum page. I've subscribed to 6 sub-forums (and a bunch of threads) so I always go to the "Subscriptions" page.

For comparison, another high-volume forum that I visit regularly is Steves Digicams. No matter where you are in the forums, the "Quick Links" control offers the ability to mark everything read:



For me, this works much better than the AVS approach. On Steves, when I finish browsing the few sub-forums of interest, I click this control once and I know that when I return anything that is marked Unread is new material since my last visit.

Did it indeed mark the entire site read for you?

If so, you can even bookmark that link and use it at your own convenience.

Again, I'm not clicking it because marking stuff read that I haven't actually read ruins a site for me.

I can confirm that, at this time, if I am in a FORUM SECTION like this one, and click "MARK FORUMS READ" and then select "All Forums" from the window that opens, it does indeed only do ONLY the forum I am in.

If I go to the main forum list showing all forums...and I click "MARK FORUMS READ", the only option I have is Cancel or Mark as Read. If I do Mark As Read it does what it should. That being, it marks the all the forums as read.

So more or less, if on the main page as he shows, it work just fine with two clicks. (More or less like the other site. One click to drop the menu and then one to mark the forums read.)

The wording is the same on the home page of forums as it is inside forums as we use the same graphic. (It is a graphic and not just text.) I really do not find it hard to understand personally. The only issue right now is that using the one inside a forum section, and then deciding you actually want to clear the entire site, because we give you the option to do either in the window at the time, does not work as it should.

But it will.

So here on this site...same number of clicks, just when inside a forum section we give the option at that same time, if someone so chooses, to mark the entire site as read vs just that section.
