Front wall paint is now done.

This place is going to be a black hole for sound and light....

What are your plans for absorbing the sound that will not be able to escape? That will be a non-trivial amount of energy you will be reflecting back into that room....

I'm gonna make you feel extra bad then, because I'm actually building two separate rooms, concurrently. Nothing like a swift kick in the gonads for a little motivation. Hop to it soldier, left right, left right. biggrin.gif

I have just over 132 sq ft of sound absorbing panels and 168 sq ft of drapes that I will be installing; in addition to the padded carpet and seating. Should work.

Status Update: Here is the amp rack and 100 2x2's for the theater columns.
The rack will be three rows of 4' by 20" deep. Ideally I'll need five rows, but this will get me started at least.
The second door will be installed tomorrow and the flooring will be installed on Friday.

and I didn't have one of these so...

What is your rack going to look like? I'm going to build a sheet rocked opening, but can't work out what to do for shelving inside.

It will be tri-rails, it's gonna look almost exactly like this:
I'll have to test it with books first to ensure it can support the weight (a couple hundred pounds).
This way was the cheapest and fastest way. I can adjust the height to be whatever. Maybe in the future I'll look into server racks.

With a dedicated theater build I would not overlook the great benefit of having easy and open access to the back of the rack. 20 inches with a wall right behind doesn't leave you much room cable management. I don't know what amps you have, but my XPA2 is 19 inches deep. If that was on a 20 inch deep shelf up against a wall, it would be pretty tough to work with. I think my cabinet is about 20 inches deep, but I have pulled away from the wall a few inches.

I'm mounting them in reverse, the front of the amps will be facing the walls and the walls will be opened up. The amp closet is 5ft x 5ft x 8ft (60x60x96), which gives about 40inches for wires and humans to walk around in and 24inches in total depth for amps.
I miscounted 12 / 3 = 4 rows of 4ft.

They say each bracket can hold 100lbs, so that's 300lbs per row which is way-overkill, the max per row I'll put on is maybe 160lbs.
I have 320lbs of gear, spread across 4 rows of 12 braces and 3 rails. Should work.
320lbs, not including the UPS or the rack itself.
Pretty light considering that that is 22 channels worth of amplification, and a HTPC and a few EQ's.
Not too shaby.

I have 2 Class-H amps, 1 Class-I, 1 Class-TD, 2 Class-D, 1 Class-AB, and 2 Class-AB+D.
Quite the mix of stuff.

Houston, we have flooring. $2000 installed.
I outsourced the work for this, I don't have all the glues and levelling compounds required and I've never done it before, it looks simple, but it's not, so...

(Ignore my muddy boot prints tongue.gif)

Even the amp closet has the stuff. smile.gif

Now it is time to start the columns, wiring and lighting.

Very nice!

Status Update: The second door is now installed. I still have some more touch ups to make it look all pretty and stuff, but this should block a lot more sound than a theater with only a single-layer entry.
There will be tonnes of time for SPL measurements later, but for now we must march onward, towards the caves of Mordor.

Here is the Projector Mount and Column Layout/Design.
This is what I am thinking of building.

The projector will be contained in the drop down, and cooled from the amp room.

Power and Audio sockets.

Something like that.

Status Update: Column frames are done.

I've used 30 of the 100 2x2's thus far.

The rest of the framing is all ceiling work. I guess I'm gonna have to buy me some more drywall for all this...

For seating, I was thinking something like this.
I have more than enough width for a row of 5, but not quite enough for a row of 7 mad.gif
I would have liked to have had more seating capacity, but at a cost of $3000 per seat, that just wasn't going to fly. (Maybe if I ever create another theater in the future.)

So these 5 primaries and a few extra secondaries will have to do. In any case, I can fit 1 to 6 more people in this theater than my previous one so I can't really complain too hard...

Glad to see that 6 seats isn't an option. It drives me bananas when I see a theater without a dead-center selfish seat.

Exactly! I had to have my Sheldon seat. biggrin.gif

Who wants to listen to off-center sound? Especially considering that I'm 90% music, and single. wink.gif
The only time the others are occupied is when family/friends are in there; and they only come for the movies.

Congrats on the speedy progress, it's been interesting following along.

Cool images. I like the symmetry, and the simple, clean aesthetic. What's your bass trapping and overall acoustic treatment plans?

Thanks

Make your rack about 24" wide and 20" to 24" deep. Then mount the equipment sideways, not backwards. That way you can easily get to the front and the back of the equipment. My equipment is in a mechanical room and I have had mine mounted this way for years. It helps since I test and change things quite often.

$3000 per seat!!!!!!!!! eek.gif Wow that is expensive! nice build so far. Can't wait to see it done.
You can always DIY the seats:

Great thread.

He's cutting a hole in the wall for the faces to poke through so technically they arent going to be backwards. Just backwards from looking at the picture.

I changed my mind, I'm doing fabric instead of drywall for the columns filled with insulation. It's cheaper, will absorb more light and bass.

That's only if I tried to go beyond 5 seats, otherwise it is $2-3K for the whole row of 5.

This looks like too much awesomeness for one man to handle

I never get enough of theater builds. You've gotten more done in a month than I have in a year. Stupid work schedule.

Status Update: Got the screen mounted, columns framing is 95% done. Audio wiring should start tomorrow.
I ended up using about 90 2x2's for the columns.

The remaining 5% of the framing is the projector box details.

As far as audio-wiring goes...
DSP-wise it is 7.1, but it is wired for 7.10 (all of those channels are bi-wired BTW eek.gif ).
Because of the bi-wiring it could technically be configured for 29.1 or 28.2 surround sound if I really wanted.

and if have enough wiring length left over after doing 7.10... I'll try and aim for 11.10 (i.e. 4 extra wires).

Man this room makes my 120" screen look tiny compared to my narrower old room.

Maybe I missed it somewhere; but is there any reason you didn't go with a fixed screen as opposed to the drop down? Also, why did you limit yourself to that size?

Great work so far, you are an animal. I wish I worked half that fast. smile.gif

Status Update: OMG I ran out of wire!!!!! 1000ft and only 66% done eek.gif
I have 20 of the 30 channel ran so far.
I'm gonna have to order another spool, that is going to put the project back a week; not a whole lot of action until then.

Projector Box framing is done. It will have to be drywalled.

There is going to be about 1000ft of power line running up the middle stapled to the ceiling as well.

I was thinking of using an in-duct accelerator fan for the Projector cooling, sucking cold air from the bottom of the amp room (AC-ed); that should cool the main room as well, with pratically no fan noise.

I don't understand. You can buy a row of 5 for $3,000, but if you want a row of 5 and 1 or 2 extras, the cost is $6,000 or $9,000?
