I've started getting UNWANTED "subscribed thread" emails

Thread Starter
Something has changed in the past couple days. I've started receiving emails announcing updates to "subscribed threads". It appears to be the one-per-day variety instead of one email coming in for every new post appearing in the thread, however I don't want any of those.

I've tried all the tricks I know of to stop them, but they still seem to be coming -- although without any pattern I can deduce as to WHICH threads they will be coming from.

Selecting to disable such notifications from ALL Threads says it has worked, but I still get the emails.

Selecting the link in each such email to "unsubscribe" from that thread says it works, but the effect does not seem to last.

I THINK what is happening is that email notifications for a given thread are getting re-enabled by mistake each time I post to a thread. But as best I can tell I've turned off that feature in my profile.

It looks like you're subbed to 3 threads and one of them is for immediate notifications.

When you reply to a thread, what's in the box under the reply that says:

"Get notified when others reply?"

It should say "Don't Subscribe" unless you want to add every thread you ever post to in your subscriptions.

That box is defaulting to Site Only as I type this Reply.

I've just changed it to Don't Subscribe for this reply, and I'll keep an eye on it as I'm posting in the other threads.

The thing is, this email traffic just began in the past couple days. So something has changed.

I also went in to Edit My Subscriptions just now and deleted everything I found in there. Again. I'll see if they reappear.

Typing this 2nd Reply, I see that box has gone back to Site Only even after my action above.

How do I get it to default to Don't Subscribe?

OK, I just changed my Default for New Subscriptions to Don't Subscribe and that seems to be having the appropriate effect -- i.e., the box now reads Don't Subscribe as I type this Reply.

The weird thing is, I tried to do just that when this problem started and I swear that "Default" pop-up did not include the Don't Subscribe choice! The last choice listed was Site Only. I've no idea whether manually selecting Don't Subscribe in the Replies here did something to enable that choice again as a Default.

(I also don't know why "Site Only" was causing emails to get sent to me....)

Anyway, this may cure my problem. I'll post again if I continue to get emails, or you can just assume the newly set "Default" did the trick.

I've been getting these mails, too. One a couple of days ago and several today. Edit Subscriptions show them as "Immediate" when I did not set that or have it as default. I've been subscribed to them for years.

I've reset them now. I do have a few "Immediate" threads set intentionally.

I do want to subscribe to threads I post in, so "Site Only" ought to be the correct default.

If you guys can keep track of what threads these are happening to and what events may have caused them to reset, like maybe simply posting to that thread, that will help the programmers track the bug down.

Thanks!

I'm also seeing this problem -- I can't tell you what events triggered it, but I am (seemingly randomly) having these threads switch from "Site Only (no email)" to "Immediate" every couple of days recently:

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1409431/the-official-denon-avr-xx13-model-owners-thread-faq

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1430049/the-official-denon-avr-4520ci-thread

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1334369/the-official-denon-avr-xx12-model-owners-thread

Several times, I have reset these threads individually to "Site Only", and also used the "Stop All Subscriptions Email" tool to reset all threads just in case, but they seem to keep popping back into email mode. I will pay more attention and see if I can trace it to a specific triggering action.

Thanks

+1 for me, AVS forum operators please look into this....it's cluttering my inbox like SPAM email.

Do you have any data to provide them as requested two posts up?

Thanks

sure - these in my inbox

  1. Sony LCOS panel degradation? 5 yrs, constant use
  2. The **OFFICIAL** DENON AVR-4520CI thread
  3. Moving past 7.1 (5.1) into 9.1 (11.1)....upgrading your HT room via Audyssey DSX or Dolby PL IIz

does this also help?

Here are 2 more that toggled to immediate subscribed!!

What is up with the forum software??

Is it happening after you reply to a thread?

What's the "Get notified" setting at while replying?
I haven't received an email, but I see that my subscription to "Official OPPO BDP-95 Owner's Thread" (http://www.avsforum.com/t/1311806/official-oppo-bdp-95-owners-thread) has been flipped to Immediate.

My last posting was 11/4/12 at 8:40pm and there have been other posts since.

I don't recall what the "get notified" selection read; it's "Site Only" on this reply.

I've asked for an update but it's especially odd that there are only 4 of you seeing this. confused.gif

Hmm...how many of us disable certain amounts of javascript? I do. That might screw up the expected behavior, but the effect is erratic.

If it's caused by any kind of end user browser customization, I doubt they'll be able to replicate it.

I reply sometimes from iPhone via taptalk, other times via web browser.

None of my web browsers are tweaked per say, just on a mix of platforms, work is IE8, home is Firefox 16.x.

happened again today. These are all threads I've posted in recently:

Well - I just created a thread here related to search function, and w/o me doing anything subscription was created for me!
I've toggled it off, but why is this happening still/again?

As of yesterday, no one else is able to replicate what's happening to the 4 of you seeing this.

Its been happening to me for over a week. I’ve never subscribed to any of these threads. Every time I go back and edit my subscriptions to site only. That seems to work for a day or so and then they return when I reply to a thread. Its as if ‘immediate’ is the default mode. I’ll keep an eye on the box at the bottom of the reply to see if it stays to site only.

I've added your info to the list for the programmers.

Did something happen with subscriptions?

I have a number of subscriptions set to site only notification. Sometime in the last several days, the subscriptions have changed to immediate notification, so I am flooded with emails. What would cause this behavior?
I just set my subscription for the Denon AVR-4520 thread to site only, and when I look now, it has reverted to Immediate. What information do you need to assist in troubleshooting this issue?
I know they're having a REALLY hard time replicating this. Less than ten reports from over a million members.
Well it perplexes me also...

And it happened AGAIN, I'd say its happening to more people, but most don't complain, etc....

I just posted a response in the emotiva thread, and this toggleg "again", I toggled it back

I got a whole slew of emails from the Audyssey thread:

Now even though NOT a subscription, when I opened up the thread the immediate notify was there, yet my pref is not set up that way, so I'm perpleed WHY I got these w/o a subscription at all!!

A screen shot of my mail box showing the subscriptions email I've gotten w/o being asked

and a screen shot of my subscriptions pref

Mike....a million "real" members who posted during the specific time period?

I respect you but that is twisting statistics a little too much......I'm a six sigma black belt equivalent and even I'd not do that to show data in my favor biggrin.gif
(in my companies problem solving methodology, we are a major OE who decided to do our own method for various reasons)

Think of the ten reports as a leading indicator of possible bigger problem looming.....hey we could easily just add AVS to junkmail and never post in this complaint (communication) thread again.......

Of course not...but you get my point. It's only happening to an extremely small percentage of folks and so far hasn't been able to be reproduced by anyone testing for it. They'll get it eventually, but as I'm sure you know, step one is to make it happen.
For what it is worth...I am also affected but I can not find rhyme or reason for it. So, well, yes they are trying to find it as you are in good company here. smile.gif (At least I hope.)
