Disney buys Lucasfilm!

When I saw the thread title I thought, star wars episode 7 and Indiana Jones 5 it is then!

The deal includes not only Star Wars but also other businesses operated by Lucasfilm, including LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound. Disney said the current plan is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations.

It's also making a seventh movie in the Star Wars series called Episode 7, set for release in 2015, with plans to follow it with Episodes 8 and 9 and then one new movie every two or three years.

That's why I prefaced it with "you never know." Better safe than sorry in today's bottom-line mentality. In the media myself and I always have one updated. Just sayin'.

can't argue with what disney has done with the marvel franchise to date.
the avengers is a an extremely entertaining movie.

nor can i nitpick with what they have done with pixar.

my issue is that disney cinematic ventures usually are extremely well done or extremely poorly done.

they may do star wars right, or they might cheapen the franchise, only time will tell.
as a non-lucas hater, i believe he did maintain the high quality of the best franchise in cinema history.


from a business point of view though, this is a great buy for disney.
with all the products, movie rights, and theme park tie ins this seems like a can't miss move for them.

disney paid over $7 bil for pixar. would think s.w. franchise was close to equal in value.

Given what Lucas did with the franchise last go I think this is a good thing. Would love to see some of the story prior to all that we know, totally fresh. I did like ROTS and the Obi-wan Maul fight from TPM but the rest... meh.

The things we used to laugh about in spoof movies come true. Star Wars 20, Rocky 13, ...

Anyone care to speculate on directors? Nolan, Whedon, and Abrams come to mind.

All three have proven worthy. Personally my first pick would be Nolan, then Whedon. I loved TDKR BTW.

As a Star Wars fan since the very beginning, I have widely mixed feelings about this announcement.

If Star Wars was anything, it was George's. Right decisions or wrong decisions, they were his. It was his vision that drove the franchise, and while he may be there to help guide the immediate future, this deal will be missing that vital creative spark that first gave it life.

I had the pleasure to see Lucas make an unannounced and unexpected appearance at the last Star Wars Celebration. Although nothing was officially stated during his time on stage, he was quick to point out that the praise for the Clone Wars TV show belongs to their creative team, and that he was their biggest fan. I had the impression at the time that even as we were all cheering, we were seeing a man confronting his own mortality, subtly nodding to the audience that he was at peace with turning the reigns of his beloved empire over to a new creative team and generation.

Realizing twilight is upon him leaves me with a deep sense of sadness, combined with the unanswerable question of what will be lost by the fans and what untapped potential there might have been.

On the positive side, Star Wars will likely have a strong future. Disney will see to that, turning it into a brand that will live for a very long, long time. The long-dismissed Episodes VII, VIII, and IX are now in the works (based on Lucas' storylines). New TV shows are likely. The books, games, and toy franchises will continue. We may see movies based on older material, such as novels or The Old Republic. Who knows, we may see a Star Wars World in one of the Disney parks one day.

And all of this will come at a brisker pace than Lucas could have managed. Can they find a way to replicate what George brought to the franchise without his guidance? Will the fans that wrote off Star Wars (or at least claimed to) return with this new deal? Will Disney court them, target a younger audience, or broaden their aim? All are too cloudy to see, but I'm hopeful.

Damn it wasnt a bad dream.

I fail to see what good 3 more movies in a finished storyline would do. Ep VI is really the perfect ending to the Star Wars saga.

Its better they make quality spin-offs then messes with the orginal trilogy.

Finally, finally, FINALLY! Star Wars is done best when there's less Lucas input--it's been that way for long time--but he will always be the one that brought it to life, and thus appreciated.

In my opinion this is great news. Star Wars has a lot of potential and Disney will have both the desire and the money to grow the franchise in terms of movies, TV shows, and games.

You are being ridiculous. The story is finished according to who? YOU? Lucas himself said the story continues with Leia's children in 7,8,9. Yet you say the story is over??????

I understand criticising Lucas, but telling Lucas and all the Starwars fans when the series ends is beyond RIDICULOUS.
