Speaker choice

I just purchased an onkyo 818 receiver.

I have a 5.1 speaker system that came with my Sony home theatre. I am planning to use this for a week or two.

Looking at a good speakers for within 400$, can stretch to 500$ if required. I can start with a 5.1 and move to 7.1/2 later.

Polk Audio RM705 5.1 Home Theater System (Set of Six, Black) $249.99 from amazon interests me.

Any suggestions would be great

I have a 350-400 sq.ft room (Might be moving to a bigger house in the near future)

Are you really going to spend all that money on a great receiver and then spend $250 on little satellite speakers? That seems backwards.

Can you have bigger speakers than that?

If all you can spend is 500 bucks right now. I'd recommend spending it on a good pair of bookshelf speakers and matching center channel. Add a good $400 subwoofer next and and then add decent surround channel speakers after that. Better to put together quality in stages than settle for less all at once.

Yes! I can go big on the speakers, but this was my starting point. I like the idea of adding speakers (As mentioned by MJ). Am open to suggestions.

to be bluntly honest, return the avr... spend more on speakers... even if you only start with 2...

you would be far better served spending 1k on speakers and 400 on an avr than the other way around...

Good advice. Keep in mind, speakers are generally considered long term items in your HT system, unless you are me smile.gif

I do not mind spending a bit on speakers. I would like to know the best possible options even if it goes beyond my current budget, that would really help me in planning for the right stuff or at least look for the right combo. I am pretty much stuck (in my head) with the 818 :-)

I was checking out the SVS audio systems, any insight on it.

Any info on the good speakers to go with 818 would be really helpful
