In the absence of Moleskin Matte Silver

I'm getting ready to start on my HT and I have a Viewsonic Pro8200 on the way. I was planning on a DIY spandex screen, but it appears that might be hard to do the right way without the moleskin matte available. Has anyone tried the stuff below? I'm pretty sure it's too shiny but I thought I would ask.

Hello Scott,

Well waddya know??? !!!

The description says "Matte" which would seem to indicate that it has little or no "sheen". The very fact it is described as actually having a Silver Metallic coating seems to me to hold a lot of potential....if not actually promising great results out of hand.

My judgement, owning to the material being 4-way Stretch would be to give it a go. Who knows but you might have stuck DIY Gold!

I callee spandex world to inquire on when moleskin matte silver would be instock. The rep i spoke with expexted it to be back on stock next week. That metallic silver appears a little darker than the moleskin matte. What would the expected pros/cons of going with a darker silver be?

Pros:
Deeper Color saturation
Blacker Blacks

Cons:
trying to think of any.......

If the surface is actually a matte Silver Metallic as stated, I doubt you would lose any gain...and in fact it might be enhanced.

The only reservation I might have comes from experience with dealing with Silver Metallic in a pure (...or nearly pure...) state.

It's terribly unforgiving.

Any surface irregularity is highlighted by the difference in the more / less reflective nature of a given area. If the material is pulled too tight, widening the "weave" openings, a moire effect might result. That would be a shame seeing that a primary advantage of Spandex is that it doesn't produce moire effects like Mfg AT material does.

But in the end, if no adverse "shine" is produced....I'd have to say again it might be the "next big discovery" for those interested in Spandex as a Screen surface.

Just checked spandexworld and it looks like moleskin matte is back in stock fellas. I think i will order the metallic matte silver and the moleskin matte silver. Use one of those as my backer for the other instead of the white.

Just ordered the white and silver matte moleskin.
Maybe the metallic coating is the kind of rubber-kind coating on the fabric, if so it covers the threads and that wouldn't be that great from a acoustic point of view even if the image would be better/the same.

But then again i haven't seen that specific fabric, only others with coating ... It might be different ...

How many yards did you guys order? For what size screen?

Can I do a 110" screen with only 2 yards?

Placed my order for both the metallic matte silver and moleskin. I will try to take photos when i get a chance to build my frame and everything gets here.

I got my delivery from Spandex World last week! Fantastic that you can sit on one side of the globe and just click (and pay wink.gif ) and someone comes to your door with a package!

Anyway, the frame is built, it's 113" in 16:9. But that´s without the black framing that will be mounted later. I guess depending on the witdth of that it will be about 104". Of course there is a possibility to make the black framing just a bit larger than the screen frame to get a slightly larger viewing size. That will also cover any visual of the side of the screen frame with the Spandex from the side.
