I currently have a Panasonic 53" widescreen 480p/1080i rear projection tv that is in my basement. We use it for tv (AT&T U-VERSE with HD), DVD (and soon to be Blueray too) and A LOT of XBOX 360 gaming, maybe eventually a PS3 too. I have been wanting to update this tv for a few years now, since I got this tv back in 2003, but with IR/burn-in issues and motion blur issues, I haven't done so yet.

I think I want a plasma because of the gaming and the refresh rates but after recent posts confirming the IR problems have returned, I just don't know what to do!

What are you all gaming on? If I replace my Panny, the new tv has to be at least 50", probably 55" -60". My seating is about 6-8ft from the tv and because the room is in the basement, daylight isn't an issue.

Of course when I ask retailers about this, all I get is..."oh no, image retention and burn-in is a thing of the past, no problem now, as long as you get a name brand TV...from all the posts I have been reading here with the new models 2011-2012s, the problem has come back fiercer then ever!

I'm still playing on a 2-year old 54" Panny Plasma and I love it! I hardly see any image retention and I think the PQ is great. The only complaint I have is the rising black-levels but that is a problem with my specific set. The newer Panny Plasmas don't have that issue anymore.

Plasmas have really fallen in price too with rise in popularity of LEDs so you can get a good deal now.

Nah image retention really isn't that big a deal unless you just keep a static screen on there for hours on end. I use a two year old Sammy 50" plasma and never worry about it. I haven't seen much in terms of newer models being worse. You can find some really good deals on 60" sets all over the place. You can typically find them under a grand too. They won't be the best tvs out there in terms of features or performance but they will suffice for probably 99% of the people out there.

Let's make this simple. Did you burn-in your rear-projection CRT that makes an image by exciting phosphors painted on the screen? No? Then don't worry about it. Plasma makes an image the exact same say, by exciting phosphors painted on the screen. The electrons that do the exciting just come from a different source allowing for thinner product. Image retention happens, and has happened on all three of my plasmas, but has never been noticeable for more that 30 seconds after bringing in a new video source that wipes out the static image. There are far more advantages to plasma that vastly outweigh "sometimes a static image hangs around for half-a-minute too long".

2001 RCA F3810, which sits like 18" from the end of my bed. 38" CRT tube HDTV, maybe the last tube one anyone sold. Still working so no good reason to change...

I'm also playing on a plasma. Bought my Samsung 58" plasma over 3 years ago and love it. Never had a problem with burn in or IR and I played a lot of games from day 1. I cringe every time I see prices on plasma tv today compared to what I paid then but I would definitely buy one again.

I am playing on a Optima HD20 projector that projects a 1080p 131" screen on my wall. It is absolutely awesome!

It's probably a majority of LCD/LED (but not a huge majority) - it's just there have been dozens of these threads and they (the threads) don't really matter.

I had a Samsung plasma about 3 years ago that had major IR issues. Nothing permanent but it could be very distracting and it always had me paranoid about leaving it on. Changed over to a Panasonic ST30 and its basically nonexistent.

Just picked up a 51" Samsung plasma and so far I love it. I haven't noticed any problems with it and the picture quality looks amazing.

Pioneer 5080HD 50" plasma still going strong (knocks on wood). In my opinion one of the best plasmas ever at that price range.

An 09 Mitsubishi 60" RPTV with a new Philips lamp no IR no lag no ghosting great sound Frost engine games looks especially good. Unfortunately Mits is out of the RPTV business but when it's time for a replacement I'll go front projector. I suppose plasma would be my second choice but who knows how long that technology will be around.

Epson 8500ub on 100" screen or 55" LG 55lm7600 3dtv. For my pc I use 3 1440p monitors for 7680x1440 resolution in nvidia surround.

A 50" Panasonic PZ85U plasma (1080p). Frustrating because upstairs I have a 60" Sharp Elite which I can't game on because our little guy is sleeping when I start to game at night. I supposed headphones could be an answer....

Do you get much lag with the 3010?

I have an 8350 and looking to upgrade, but have heard that the current versions of Epson projectors have lag.

FWIW, I game on an Epson 8350 with 92" drop down or a 50" Panasonic plasma from what feels like 150 years ago.

they do have more lag than the 8100/8350/8500(which i have)/8700

not sure if i'd go epson for 3d if you are gaming. i'd think i would go panasonic or benq personally.

Either I don't notice any lag or I'm just use to it because I can consistently go 24-5 or better in Blops 2 multiplayer. I had a Benq projector and I don't think I would ever get another, but that's just my opinion and that means squat.

kjr39 test drive a few things until you are happy the return policy is your friend. For the price I paid for the 3010 I'm very satisfied. I have zero crosstalk which was my goal, the 60"(LG PZ950) plasma the projector replaced had horrible crosstalk.

you're probably just used to it because it's proven it has more lag according to reviews and tests by people in the projector sections.

and benq's are actually highest rated gaming projectors for still wanting home cinema projector at same time. DLP in general is faster than 3lcd for gaming on projectors.

Even my epson 8500 has lag but it's not as much as the 3d epson projectors. Either way you can't go wrong with any choice if you are using the projector for multiple reasons
