Audio problems with loud scenes on HBO/cable - Page 2

Since from this and other threads it's obvious the problem is an HBo/Cinemax source issue, and is happening on many providers,

If the distortion is originating at HBO, then it should be audible at DirecTV and the other carriers?
I don't seem to have the issues you guys are describing with my HBO. I just flipped over to HBO and The Green Lantern is showing I watched the scene with the Helicopter crash lots of loud booms and crashes no noticeable distortion.

Omg!! Thank god someone else is having the Exact problem I'm having. I mean, it sucks you have the same problem but I'm glad I'm not alone. I have had the cracking sounds issue on the exact same movies like terminator, die hard etc. game of thrones too. I've switched from vios to cox thinking it would change but still the same. Every time there is a scene with loud gun shots or high action sounds it make high pitched cracking or static noise. I have nice Polk audio speakers and a nice pioneer receiver with Samsung smart tv. It's not my equipment. Something has to be done. I've paid people to come out and check it but no one knows what's causing it.

Jk

I'm expecting an update from directvs engineers on the 15th. Last I checked they were working with hbo and cinemax. It should be be interesting to see what they say and have found out

Tarheel - were you able to confirm that the problem existed in the same scene regardless if it was recorded or streamed through the on demand? That was on my list to do, but i haven't had a chance to do so yet.
there are a couple of posts claiming that it does not happen "on demand" which would make sense since the program is coming from a data server, but I don't know if that is 100% confirmed.
And a couple more posts elsewhere from FIOS customers with the same issue.
Kgb it's strange because it did exist on recordings on demand (I confirmed this over and over again) for a while but just over the past 30 days it seems to be only live/live recordings
post #40 of 81
I notice it the most in the movie "Aliens," and it almost sounds like a bed sheet ripping/clothes tearing effect mixed in dynamic scenes with gunshots. "Aliens" is available on demand so I'll see if I notice it there as well.
I will try an on demand movie and see if it does it.
I was getting it on game of thrones. Just saw it regular TV and hears it. Downloaded on demand and did not. Maybe coincidence but I'm going to watch on demand for a while and see. I even turned it up another few notches since wife wasn't home and didnt hear it when watching on demand.

I talked to one of the original tier 3 guys at TWC, (back when the T3 dept was just a closet) one of the guys that trained me, about the issue, said he'd look into it, he hasn't gotten back with me yet. Things are very busy their ATM, new construction going on and such. Will let ya know if I hear anything.

Just watched "Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter" or whatever it's called on HBO HD from DVR. Sounded great, not a single pop or crack and it's got some intense audio.

Aliens was so horrible, I couldn't take it, I just deleted it. I'll just watch it on the Roku3 with HBO Go.

Its weird how some movies do it and others don't. Sounds like most of the older movies are having the issues. Could it be that they are manipulating the original sound from those older movies and its effecting how our receivers process it?
Jkloman,

That's what I originally thought as well however with it existing in Game of Thrones I'm not sure that's the case. Who really knows for sure though.

Thank god for fios on demand...they have the best premiun content on demand but some movies sound different than their bluray counterparts
post #47 of 81
Tarheel-
Yeah your right. Game of thrones is real bad a lot. Like when they were climbing that ice wall with the high winds...but what if its certain receivers? Cause I've asked other people if they have issues and they dont. Idk.
Is it also an issue on service electric cable of sparta nj as well as optimum?
I was turned on to this thread from another forum, just want to report I have the same issue on HBO and Max with Dish Network, Hopper and Hopper with Sling.

Slightly annoying...

I commented on hbos facebook page and no reply

That was my test scene. No issue with on demand. Recorded it again. Saw the issue.

We're just watching Game of Thrones on the Roku 3 with HBO GO, looks and sounds great! Really can't tolerate this noise issue, very annoying.

I have a new Yammy AVR. I haven't experienced this yet with Dish. I've only watched "GoT" at moderate volumes. I never got this issue with either of my HK AVR's.

How high are you guys cranking this..to reference levels?
On my nearly 6 year old sony AVR, when heard in medium level volume (37 out of 74), during loud scenes there is an audio crackle. I use an optical cable from vizio tv to avr, then hdmi cables connected to the fios DVR and my PS3 for perfect picture. Picture quality is pretty good for an HBO show, minor macroblocking, but the audio is the big issue. It started when i listened to some movies on the cinemax channels that were in HD then it passed on to the sister HBO Channels. No problems with Showtime/TMC, Starz/Encore, and Epix channels although sometimes Showtime breaks up a bit in signal. Perhaps buying the bluray will be my choice to keep Game of Thrones the tv series forever no matter where I am to go alongside my two GoT books.
Doing it today, Aliens on 5 Star Max (Dish). Denon 3313 set at 25db volume (0.0 is reference).
Just noticed this the other day. Happening for me on cable in Ohio on both HBO and Showtime. Interestingly enough, it's only happening with my cable box/dvr. I also have a cablecard tuner for Windows, and it doesn't seem to be happening on that. And it only seems to be popping on the center channel, although I did notice it once or twice on the left channel as well.

Definitely seems like something in their broadcast chain is over modulated, and any one of their encoders in the path is clipping, thus causing the popping.
Has anyone gotten feedback from hbo on their facebook page? I didn't.
Thank god for this thread as I thought my speakers were blown. I noticed this most at the end of GOT ep 4 (without spoilers you'll know if you've seen it) with the fire. I'm on Charter and also didn't have the issue watching from On Demand, only the live feeds and recorded to DVR.
As I suggested in the other parallel thread on this topic, you really need to involve somebody who has connections in the industry to get the problem solved. I was suggesting Dave Moulton, because he has been following the whole TV loudness issue for years and understands the technology. He also writes a column in TV Technology. If you can pique his interest and get him to write it up in TV Tech, it might stimulate a little action.

Finally found this thread, finally get to quit troubleshooting and worrying abt the settings on my home theater. I have directv w/ genie and have been experiencing major problems w/ game of thrones as well! Glad to know its not a blown speaker!
