Technics SL-1100A: Rebuild or Buy New Turntable

I have a Technics SL-1100A turntable that I bought new back in the late 70's early 80's. It still works pretty well although it is difficult to adjust the platter speed to maintain a constant speed. I would like to know your thoughts on whether I should spend the money to completely refurbish this turntable with new components, e.g. motor, tone arm, etc. or buy a new turntable. Are there companies who specialize in these types of restorations/rebuilds? If a new turntable is the way to go, what would be represent a good audiophile turntable in the $1,000 to $2,500 range. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Thanks for the response Ratman. I would still like to know if there are experts who would be able to completely go through and refurbish this turntable. Thanks.

Most such projects are labors of love for the owners, because paying someone to do it right can be very, very costly.

If you have to retrofit/refurbish a turntable (motor, arm, cartridge, etc.), you may as well just get a new turntable.

first check the thrift stores. I always see a lot of technics stuff at them. maybe someone will donate a good used working one.

As an owner of two SL-1100A's, every time my pitch control starts to maintain a constant speed, I just spray the pitch control pots with a shot of Deoxit. They work good as new after that. I know the capacitors have to be changed out eventually, but I never had to do that to mine and mine have had heavy DJ use and work good as new.
