Networking question with media player not seeing server.

I wasn't sure where else to post this so decided to create a new thread. The problem I am having is with a Mede8er streaming player seeing my server movie share. I discovered a connection between two seemingly unrelated events which determines whether or not I can navigate to my server movie share from this player.

If a certain laptop computer is turned on and is connected to my network then my player is able to see the server. If the laptop is not turned on then the player will not see the server. The laptop and server are both on the same workgroup which is called "WORKGROUP". I have set static IP addresses for all devices such as the server, laptop, Mede8er and Dune. It's not a huge problem to just turn that laptop on but I don't think I should have to and I'm thinking I just have something setup wrong. Any suggestions?

It because your laptop is for some reason stuck as the master browser. The way samba functions is one computer holds the information for shares and computer on a workgroup, Each machine does not broadcast itself, So you need to figure out why another machine is not stepping up to role of master, A simple solution shutdown everything on your network, power on a machine that is on 24/7 then power on each device one after the other and a new master should be picked.

Interesting. I have done a little reading about this master browser thing and I'm anxious to see which clients have this turned on and if it's turned on in my unRaid server. Thanks for the tip!

I need to do a little more testing but I think I made progress last night. I went into the settings of the unRaid server and changed the master browser setting to "YES" where it had been "NO" before. My wife was using that laptop off and on last night so it was hard to tell if this fixed the problem for sure but I think it may have. I will post back here tonight when I know for sure.

Well, all seems to be working fine so I think it's safe to say that the problem is solved.

Thanks "halfelite" for putting me on the trail of the master browser thing. I had no idea how that worked but as mentioned above, changing the server to the master browser did the trick. Other clients, including the laptop that was master browser now see the server as well as other devices on the network.
