I used the assassins guide built my HTPC and it works great. Is there a solution for recording HD directv from an HD24 that anyone is using? I have seen so much conflicting info it would be nice is someone actually has one that works.
HD video with matching 5.1 signal.

All you need is the Hauppage HD-PVR or Colossus and an IR blaster and you should be able to record from it with no problem.

Half right, the best choice is the HDPVR or Colossus (component/HDMI). The IR blaster is not needed as you can get network tuning going easily. This is my setup.....2 Colossus cards, 2 directv receivers, and network tuning.

What network tuning do you use?

Is there any advantage between the 2 that would make one better than the other? Also is the software with it good enough to edit the commercials out?

Also there seem to be a couple of models

The HD-PVR2 is at BestBuy, that one any good?

The HD PVR doesnt use an HDMI cable, does it matter? Would prefer to use the HDMI for a single cable solution. Then I can make use of the 5.1 signal.
