HTPC Suggested Build

I have been kicking around a new HTPC or server or PC build for a few months now, and I finally decided to just ask opinions. I have been reading threads and could not come to a consensus, so I decided to ask the experts and the opinionated how they would proceed.

Here is my current situation: I have several movies saved to a 1TB NAS. I have about 32GB left and haven’t begun to rip blurays yet. Right now, I stream to a laptop and a few WDTV lives (1st generation – cheap player, but for what it is, it seems to play everything). The GUI on the WDTV is beginning to be difficult to navigate with 350+ movies and television shows on the hard drive, so I would like to, eventually, get a better interface. I run MediaBrowser on my laptop, but I am also considering JRiver and XBMC.

So, listed in order, here is what I need in order of importance:

1. Storage – stream blu-ray quality rips
2. Encode – I could continue this from my laptop (i7-2620M, Radeon 6450), but is there any way to offload this somewhere else without breaking the bank?
3. HTPC – better interface than current.
4. Some gaming.
5. Some Photoshop (only if full blown PC option is used).

4. Server + HTPC – Just a simple server and simple HTPC capable of 3d/1080P and possible gaming.


Ok, to some all of this up:

1. I would love to stay in the $700 - $800 range.
2. I have a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate or WHS 2011 available.
3. My number 1 item is storage.
4. I would want to encode/transcode on the new machine if possible, but better or on par with my laptop.

I hope there is someone who is willing to help, just some other side notes:

1. I may be able to get an i5-3570k for $50 more than the i3-3225.
2. I am not necessarily an Intel guy; I just keep reading that Intel is better at everything except onboard graphics.
3. In fact, I am not a brand loyal guy for anything on these, so recommendations are welcomed and appreciated.
4. I will hopefully be getting better appliances to replace the WDTV lives (Dune, Popcorn, Ceton Echo) so that may change how much processor is needed in the server (option 1&2) to run YAMJ! Or Media center.
5. I am on a wired gigabit network.

Sorry so long winded, just wanted to give everyone an overall view of what I am trying to do.

If you wan an all-in-one system, GD08, 3550K, a better cooler, Z77 mb with at least 8 SATA ports, DDR3-1866 4GB x 2, Vertex 4 128GB, a bunch of 3TB HDDs (e.g WD30EZRX), Seasonic G-Series Gold (550W is enough), with a gaming graphics card (depending on your requirements; GTX 650 Ti 2GB GDDR5 or higher, for example, if you are considering CUDA).

Going the total PC option, I think I had a good build that included a monitor for around $1,300, but I would much rather go the HTPC-server option. I think $1,200 is a little much just for an HTPC and server, but if that is my best option, I will look into it. I was hoping to keep the HTPC-server option around $700-$800 at most.

I think the wow factor of an HTPC setup goes away (for me) if the cost goes too high. Spending $30 or so on a blu-ray and then ripping it to a drive is great when I do not have to dig out the disc for the kids, or scratching it, but me being just a normal guy, the equipment to do that needs to be more reasonable. That is just me though.

I really appreciate the input keep it coming.

Using integrated GPU will cut the cost the most. 3570K is still good for PhotoShop. Intel HD Graphics 4000 is also good for video playback. Or go with 3225 or A8-5500/5600K/A10-5700/5800K+ASRock A85X ATX mb. Other downgrade options are:

- GD08 (2 SSDs + 8 HDDs + 3 x 120mm fan) -> nMEDIAPC HTPC 6000B (6 HDDs)
- RAM -> Ares DDR3-1600 or 1866 2 x 4GB Kit
- Seasonic -> Rosewill Capstone 550W Gold $70 (but Seasonic is already $75 AR)

BTW Hyper 212 EVO does not fit most HTPC cases. For example, the max height allowed in GD08 is 135mm. Or go with a tower case.

I'd build 2 boxes:

- One mid tower next to the TV for your HTPC/gaming/photoshop needs

- One mid tower as a server/encoding box/NAS - Win 8 has storage spaces which makes it as a server OS especially appealing.

The server should be less than $500, the main box less than $700, depending on how you want to configure it. This sound about right?

The GPU depends on how much and what type of gaming you intend to do. To get any sort of decent framerates and quality, you would want a GTX 650 Ti as a minimum (not sure what the equivalent ATI card is). As it's a very easy upgrade to add a discrete GPU later you could always build the machine without one and see how it performs. Then if you want a performance boost you could add one later.

The silverstone case you have selected is AWESOME! I have the same and LOVE it! Has plenty of expansion - can hold up to 8 HD. I did an extensive review and posted it up here - check it out.

That seems to be the best option, but configuring a server, I always seem to go overboard. I will try to put something together and drop it here. Windows 8 is cheap, but I have heard mixed reports. Should the server be Windows 8, Windows 7, or WHS 2011?

Windows 8 home server with new features add to it looks attractive (a brief introduction: Building a Windows 8 Home Server) at first, but it seems there are a couple of design flaws (well, I have no hands-on experience on this subject yet). Read:

Windows 8 Storage Spaces: Bugs and Design Flaws

So eventually you may want to run FlexRAID or a similar program or two on Windows 8/7/HS 2011.

I agree with some of the other posters. if you're doing light gaming, you do not need a graphics card. the i5 should handle most games well.

For storage -- why not go with an external USB 3.0 drive? That's my current set up.

So for the realtime transcoding, I would just rip an .iso/.mkv file? That seems like it would eat up space rather quickly. I ripped the Dark Kight the other day and I think just the movie and DTS were around 31GB.

I guess I should have said that if I go to the TV room for movie time, I would use the bluray for "ultra" quality. On my other televisions, I think for a bluray quality size is around 6GB.

Don't get me wrong, "ultra" quality streaming would be awesome, but isn't that price prohibitive to most people? Ie.. 33 movies per TB?

i would think I would leave the graphics card until later also.

External drive connected to an HTPC? I guess my concern is size 3TB might last awhile, but eventually I run out of space, and I kind of like pooling the disks together. I think I may be misunderstanding your setup.

2 questions: Why OCZ Vertex 4 over the Samsung 830 (just curious).

What CPU cooler do you recommend?

Based on my analysis on "client PC usage model" and performance data on each SSD model. Details here.



Stock cooler (3225, underclocked A8/A10), Big Shuriken (for low-profile HTPC case), Geminii S524 (for full-height HTPC cases), Hyper 212 EVO (for tower cases).

BTW WHS 2011 can be installed in a 60-64 SSD. Google search with keywords "WHS 2011", "install" and "SSD".

Well, go with GD08 and ditch the server in your previous post. I don't see the need for a server at this stage, unless you want to rip 1,000 BDs in MKV or ISO or folder immediately (that would require 30-45TB storage space = 10-15 3TB HDDs).

Ripping and encoding are different. Ripping is just copying data on an optical medium to a HDD. Ripping requires very little CPU processing power. Ripping speed almost entirely depends on the read speed of the optical drive (currently x1 up to x8 to read a dual-layer BD-ROM).

Encoding is converting a compressed format of video to another, say, MPEG-2 to H.264, usually to reduce the file size to save storage space or to play back with a mobile device.

OCZ is rubbish. My last drive died in 48hrs. I'd keep the server build and build a $500 HTPC - you don't need a 3570K or that much RAM.

You see the cutbacks and layoffs a few weeks back? Rubbish matched with Sandforce, which certainly does not equal reliability.

The way I have my HTPC setup, it's easier for me to just utilize the USB3.0 and use an external harddrive to save movies and save too. My HTPC is actually a full-fledged computer in a small form factor (about the size of ashoebox). If it had a graphics card, it could easily replace my current gaming PC.

I've dabbled with a NAS storage before, but I found it didn't do well with the router provided to me by FiOS and streaming and transferring files were too slow.

BTW WHS 2011 can be installed in a 60-64 SSD. Google search with keywords "WHS 2011", "install" and "SSD".

So Samsung 840 (non-pro version) wold be better according to the chart.
