First DIY with 2 Kicker CompVR 12"

Hello,

I have had two Kicker Comp VR 12" (i believe this is the correct link) woofers in my vehicle and am downsizing to a single 10". Intially, I figured I would sell the two 12s but I am not satisfied with the used price they are demanding. Therefore, I'm debating about using them as HT woofers.

I've downloaded WinISD but am unfamiliar with building boxes, ideal enclosure characteristics, and if the sub is one of the many 12" kicker options in WinISD.

Here are the specs of a woofer:

RMS Power Handling: 400W
Voice Coil: Dual
Impendance: Unsure (either 2 or 4 ohm, most likely 2ohm)
Freq Response: 25-500 Hz
Sensitivity: 86.7 dB
Xmax: 12.64mm


I really like the finished product of saabracer23's work in his thread

And of course, I'd prefer a balance between performance and enclosure size as I don't know what the future HT room will be like.

What I am unsure about:

1. Are these suitable woofers to try to build an enclosure for? (I'm unsure about future room size as I will be moving soon)

2. What would be some ideal dimensions for these woofers?

3. What are some common amplifiers for such a job?

Any help to start off or veto this build would be greatly appreciated.

1. Since you already have the speakers there is no reason not to build something with them.

2. Don't know until you model in WinISD

You need to get the T/S params in order to play w/ winisd. Check the link to download the manuals. If you want to use an existing file in Winisd just open new project and go through the Kicker drivers looking at the T/S params (there is a checkbox to display them) and find one that matches the best info you can find for your drivers. If one doesn't exist you will have to start from scratch.

Kicker does give enclosure recommendations in their manual as well.

3. It's hard to recommend an amplifier if you don't know the driver impedance. Find out if you have dual 2 ohm or dual 4 ohm. Then you need to decide on an enclosure type and size so that you can figure out how much power the drivers can take mechanically.

First, you should definitely do a project with those subs. Car subs can work just fine in a home environment. Just don't go into this thinking they will be world beaters and keep your expectations realistic. I'm using car subs in a well built enclosure that was designed for my specific needs/wants and they sound awesome!

Do you have a digital multimeter? throw some wire around those coils and see what you get for resistance. That will answer the above question for you.

You should next determine how you want to use these drivers (type of enclosure) and that may help to determine the amp that will best suit your needs. There are a ton of options for amps and many can be had for pretty cheap. Do you want both drivers in one enclosure, two separate enclosures, sealed or ported or a horn of some type. What are your building skills?

I'm thinking I should build two ported enclosures (one for each sub).

and I might attempt a similar port style to 'saabracer23' unless there is a disadvantage to the square port (limited build experience here and circles look tough).

I am also thinking about surface mounting them over recessed, and using a grill or screen to cover them up.

2 ohm woofers or 2 ohm per coil? As you have indicated 2 ohm per coil then you can run each sub, coils wired in series, as a 4 ohm load. Power them with a 3-500w plate amp each or wire the two boxes together in series and find an amp that is 600-1000w at 8 ohms or use a 2 channel pro amp.

To get power requirements narrowed down you need to get some graphs done in WinISD. If it were me I would start with a 4cuft vb and a 17hz fb, see how it looks and adjust from there.

I believe 2ohm per coil, or 4 ohm per woofer. Here is a pic of the back.

I believe I had each woofer wired in series to present a 4 ohm load per speaker and then wired the pair in parallel to present a 2 ohm load to a Kicker kx600.1 that outputs 600W x 1 @ 2 ohm

I have a CompVR 12" in my home theater right now. Very versatile driver, good for sealed or ported applications. Good luck. I found 70-80 liters (per driver) sealed to be ideal. I found the CompVR has a bit more mechanical noise than some drivers, but that in a sealed config you can't hear it at all. Not an issue per se, just an observation.
