GF wants Bose.... I say we can get better...

So we recently put our TV above the fireplace in my living room, last night the conversation of surround sound came up after hanging out at a friend who has that bose cinemate II. After looking online and seeing the price tag of almost $600 for 2 speakers and a subwoofer, i brought up im sure i can come up with a better system for the same price . I'm no audiophile by any means but i also like to get my moneys worth for a product and get the best i can for my dollar. My GF has said she'll give me until after Black Friday to see what i can come up with for the same price range as what she wanted. So assume you had a $600 to spend on a 5.1 surround sound system,

Budget- I'd like to keep it 600 or under to prove a point, i dont preffer brand A over brand B just want something nice, and better then the cinemate...

Room- i'll measure today when i get home from work.

The Onkyo HT-S9400THX for $630 is the best buy and by far the best sounding HTiB. It is a 7.1 system with all sealed speakers and sub. It is THX certified and is networkable and able to pass thru 1080p 3D video and has the HD audio formats found on Blu-rays.

i dont want to limir myself to HTIB ( just didnt know where to post for an entire system idea) but if the Onkyo is the best i can get for $630 even by piecing a set together im all for it.

By all means piecing together a system is the best way to go. But then I'd expect to spend quite a bit more money. I'm not an HTiB fan at all but I have installed the earlier versions of the 9400THX for 2 different relatives and the speakers are the same in those units as the new one. I think it sounds good for the money, BUT my 7.2 system with $1k in 7 speakers and $1k in 2 subs blows it out of the water, NO comparison.

Well that should be a gimme... a $650 system shouldn't sound even half as good as 2,000 system. I dont think the bose sounds bad ( if that's any indication of my ears lol) i just think i can get a decent 5.1 or heck even a 7.1 like listed above for the same price range.

Yeah I agree..... The one thing with bose is there is a hole in the freq resp. The sat speakers are so small and can't produce low freq sounds at all, and the bass module can't reach to a high enough freq where the sats leave off. Now bose NEVER tells you a freq resp which is one red flag right there. But if you would play a bass sweep say from 1khz down to 20 hz well nothing would exist below 30hz and somewhere between like 120hz and 200hz there would be a hole.

I see you posted this question in the speakers area. And if you want seperates that's the place to look.
