How much of each (POPCORN, OIL, SALT) is in Popcorn portion packs?

I have a 4oz popper and use BULK supplies.

I have consistantly read that the "portion packs" appear to have different amounts (usually more oil) than the recommended amounts that come with the machines.

I would really like to know what those amounts are. Would anyone who has portion packs be willing to measure the contents? I know it's a hassle, but it would be greatly appreciated.

Please don't guess, I want fairly accurate measurements.

I would be most interested in the 6oz Mega Pop and Country Harvest brands, as they seem to be the most popular.

I would also be interested in the BULK amounts others are using.

Have always heard the recommended ratio was 4:1 corn to oil. Some prefer 3:1. The 2 oz. Gold Medal coconut oil pre measured paks I purchase are sold for 6 oz to 8 oz. poppers, which matches the same range.

I'm with you jawhn. I'd like to know how much is in the portion packs also. I have an 8oz popper and use 1cup corn with 2 oz coconut oil. I have varied the amount of oil from about 1oz to 2.5oz. The lesser amount doesn't pop very well and the higher amount results in too oily corn.

Measurement, smeasurement...you have a 4OZ machine/whatever. There is only 1 option for you if you have any common sense (and taste wink.gif ) and that is what I use after extensive research and taste testing...'Great Northern Pop Corn Company 4OZ Kettle All-In-One Premium Tri-Pack' which is touted as the "best tasting popcorn in the USA"...after trying some (I use a dutch oven pot on the stove top) I have to agree with them, you won't get better movie theater popcorn if you go to the movie theater and buy it.

I tried "Snappy" popcorn once and it was old popcorn that they must have sent me. It would never pop correctly. After that fiasco, I tried "Megapop" which is AKA Gold Medal popcorn. I didn't have any problems popping the GM popcorn using the same popper. I love it!

I don't know about the portion packs... but in my Whirley-Pop I use

1/2 cup corn
1-2 Tablespoons butter flavored Coconut Oil
1 Tablespoon Flavacol

Drizzle with butter flavor topping if desired, warmed up in a plastic mustard bottle used in baby bottle warmer.

Everyone I've made it for loves it, so much so that I've dubbed it my "Better Than the Movie Theater" popcorn.

PS: Sorry I have been away from the forums. I became jobless on August 31st and am not able to get unemployment.

the wabash farm(made for whirley pop 6oz) have about 1.5 tablespoons of seasoning and im guessing about 1/8-1/4 cup of oil

as for bulk i use 1/3 cup corn(Orville in a jug) a good sized scoop(big melon baller) of coconut oil and 1-3tbsp of flavacol(i eyeball it)

You're missing the point of my question. Lot's of people use the pre-pacs (different brands), and love them, but I want to use bulk supplies (MUCH cheaper in the long run). I agree, I wouldn't need to know measurements, if I use the pre-packs.

If you know someone that lives near you and he or she has 4oz or 6oz prepaks, you could measure their corn and see how much you need for your popper. How about this? Email Gold Medal and see what they say. Surely a popper manufacturer could tell you how to measure what you need.

I tried this mix for some guests last night. Everyone, including me, thought it was WAY to salty. It did have a nice color.

I find that by putting the Flavacol in the pan first (and spreading it around to form a nice little layer on the bottom), then the oil, and finally the corn... then begin the popping process helps to alleviate some of the over-saltiness.

Drizzling with the artificial butter flavor topping helps as well.

If it's still too salty, use a little less than one tbspn of Flavacol. It is quite potent, but along with the butter flavor coconut oil, one of the keys to awesome popcorn.

Again, all in my opinion and that of my guests. Also keep in mind I have a Whirley-Pop and not an actual popper, so my recipe may need to be tinkered with in actual machines.

I guess the key is trial and error until you settle on a recipe that suits the tastes of you and your guests, but I hope I provided a good baseline.
