Media Streamer(s) Quality vs Stand Alone Blu-Ray player?

Quality Question?



* I run straight BD ISO's *

Output :

1080p / 24 htz

Bitstream Audio



If I were to play a BD in high-end player such as the Oppo 105.
http://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-105/

Running native output 1080p 24 / bitstream audio...

Would the audio quality or video quality be any better then let's say a popcorn hour a-400?

I know techniogically it should be the same... But like things in high-end audio different transports can still provide different results for audio CD's.

Most (all?) of the streamers do some manipulation of the video. Things like color space conversion. 4:2:2 vs 4:4:4? I don't really understand.

For most people this won't make any difference, but if you have an external video processor it might.

The audio quality difference should not be able to be heard if you are bitstreaming in both cases. A small difference in jitter may be measureable. If you are bitstreaming you will be using the DAC of whatever you are streaming to, not the one in the oppo or the PCH.

The Oppo will not play ISO directly, so there's that.

There are examples of players with default settings that output incorrect color and brightness data, but once correctly set up most all will give identical picture on BD.
As mentioned, it makes no difference what you use to bitstream audio.

It's probably best to pay more attention to what a player offers for features and functions, as there are many real differences there.

Audio is the easy part. Video is where things get hosed. everything else on the market is sub standard to the oppo. go read the benchmarks if you want at anandtech and it will show you performance of HTPC's and streamers etc in objective torture tests...

That said these torture tests seldomly apply to straight BD playback.
