Planning to rebuild my 20TB WHS Flexraid server: Information requested. - Page 7

OK,

So I am dead in the middle of a complete server overhaul. My Current server is running WHS2011/FlexRAID with an H61 Asrock Motheroard, 8GB 1600mhz Gskill DDR3 and a G630 CPU. (I bought the ram thinking I would upgrade the board)
I have purchased a new Asrock Z77 Extreme4 motherboard, a supermicro x8 Sata card and 4 more 3TB HDD's. BUT I NEED A CPU !!!!

Normally it would be easy to pick- But my HTPC is currently running a 3570k I picked up at Microcenter for $120(motherboard combo w/ Asrock Z77 PRO3) I feel it's possibly over kill since I only use my HTPC to play mediabrowser/XBMC or manually play a movie off my server. That's basically it.

I have have a full time i7 Desktop I use to rip, encode, manage and do almost all my PC related tasks. I add content to the server via the desktop and the HTPC simply plays it back on the TV in a convenient viewing location.

I wanted a 3570k in my server since it transcodes on the fly PLEX; I'm considering using the HTPC CPU for the server and replacing that with something cheaper. So that complicated options.

The reason I am in a rush is Cyber Monday deals. I need to buy today.

Update: I am just going to use a 3.0ghz G860 for $57 for now... and upgrade the CPU at a later date when I figure things out.

That's the common sense approach and a wise choice . I am sure you have made the G860 purchase by now but I just don't know if I could pass on a 2105 at that price . That chip , as u well know , runs $134 all day ... everyday !

I am not sure I need that. I won't hot swap drives and swapping out a failed drive or adding another is infrequent and simple enough for a PC geek like me.

My desktop case is nicer.

What I do need is a PSU.

Recommend me a PSU for the following system:

SERVER RUNNING FLEXRAID AND WHS2011
i5/i7 CPU
Asrock Z77 Extreme4 board
8GB DDR3 1600mhz Gskill
10 fans in ComosII case with fan control.
16 HDD's
DVD/RW drive.
SATA3 120 GB SSD

I'd like one that I can live with for a while. I have feeling my server will continue growing.

20 watts per HHD right ?

so 16x20= 320 watts. Plus say 200 watts for a board and cpu/ram and SSD/optical drive system ? SO like 650 watts?

Anyone know a good 600+ watt PSU with lots of SATA power cables on sale ???

I don't have room for a rack in my office. I can however accept the super tower case without issue. I don't want to move it to the basement. I like having it in my office. Basically it's my PC room.

Tower is tricker looking and easier to place. In a different location I'd do a rack. But I can't fit the rack in my AV closet. It's already full and built with shelfs

AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 - So I have ordered it from two different places and both are out of stock and back ordered.

I might end up just getting the IBM if I can't find it for less than $150

FLASHING IBM M1015 ?????

OK... Another update.

After buying the SAS2LP twice- with it being back ordered I have cancelled both orders and purchased the IBM card on ebay for $80 with the full slot bracket.

I'll flash it to a pure HBA non RAID card. It was about $70 more to get the SAS2LP that was in stock. For that price it's worth the hassle to me.

Below is a link to the re-flashing of the IBM M1015 card, thanks to user madburg at lime-technology's unraid forum:

I followed his instructions and used the bat files in the listed downloaded zip file "LSI MegaRAID SAS2008 Controller.zip - 5.32 MB (Windows)"

I used an older ASUS 8n-CM AMD based MB with a usb stick following the instructions in the zip file to flash mine successfully.

Flashing M1015

Lots of good info there for unraid and ESXi installs as well.

I don't really think you need that much PSU unless you're adding a beefy graphics card

The 16x20W isn't really accurate, it's more like 16x10W. The 200W for an i7, z77, ddr3, optical, ssd, and fans is pretty high on the estimate as well. Were you doubling everything to shoot for 50%?

I think you're looking at a system that's never going to idle higher than 100W and only pull 200W at full load.

Lot's of people around the web say that startup current with HDDs is the determining factor for PSU sizing, but if you take a look at your UEFI settings in the Asrock extreme4 you will notice that "Staggered HDD Start" is one of the options.

I can understand you wanting to get the PSU now and keeping room for the future.

I say go with the current deal on the MKIII 600W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703036

Thanks guys. I know that one is Seasonic based and sells well. I was looking at that one.

I do want to get a PSU that I can move into a Norco 4224 later... as I think I am going to eventually move beyond 16 HDD's at some point.

But I guess I could always buy one with the case later.

Also special thanks for an intelligent post. This is generally how I feel but it was nice to see you remind me with math.

I am going to be building this server and I want to get a while out of it. It will run 24/7 so a dollar a month.. is 12$ a year. A couple years is $25. So I am wondering in my head if I should spend another $25 to get a slightly better PSU.

I have a 460watt now. A cheapo coolermaster. I am wondering if I need more. Or if I should put it off till I add more drives.

I could be wrong, It been I while since I flashed. But I remember flashing from DOS from USB stick and using the SAS address on a sticker on the card.
So basically the same link you provided but a couple of lines down. LSI MegaRAID to SAS2008(P11).rar
P11 is older firmware I believe P14 is the newest.

Here is another link. It doesn't have batch files, you'll have to type the commands in yourself.

My card arrives this week. I will be doing this. All the help and insight I have received and continue to receive is greatly appreciated. I would like to get it right and do it as easy as possibly and not risk damage or doing it incorrect.

ASRock Z77 Extreme3 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard


I ended up getting this motherboard on Black Friday Special. It was $99 with free shipping and came with 8GB of Gskill Ripjaws DDR3 1600mhz memory. I assumed the 8GB was worth at least $25 which made the Z77 motherboard about $75 in my head. Seemed like a fair price for an Asrock Z77. It had x8 slot for my SATA card and 8 SATA ports. If I use one for SSD and OS drive that leaves me 15 HDD's so I won't even bother adding another card yet. I plan to use 13 HDD's to start out. 8 3TB drives and 4 2TB drives plus my OS SSD.

My initial board will be this cheap Z77 Asrock, 8GB of DDR3 and a G860 CPU with HD graphics.

Thanks for this great post. I ended up getting the cables on Ebay. It was Intel/Foxcon branded and model numbered stuff and it was cheap so I assumed it would be a good choice. I bought two cables that fan to 4 SATA ports.
I hope that is what I needed. I guess one end to the card... the four ends to four HDD's.

My last issue is my PSU. I should replace it with something better.
I am pretty much sure I will end up with a NORCO 4224 case at some point. This whole server thing just seems to snowball pretty easy on me.

Thanks on this. I am in line with your thinking but basically just looking for a good deal on the right PSU now. I would like to spend under $100. The other option is to use my current Desktop PSU and use a smaller one on that. If someone knows a good 600+ watt PSU under a $100 with good amount of SATA power let me know please.

Thanks again for this intelligent post.

I'm still debating. I think this server will run 24/7 for years in my home. $.75 a month could add up to the difference of a good PSU and a mediocre PSU so I want to get it right the first time. I cut corners on it last time so this is the time to take my time and make a good choice.
I'd love to hear more opinions on the proper balance between gold, bronze, platinum or whatever... vs the price differences in PSU sales prices.
Keep in mind I might grow to 24 HDD's at some point in next couple years...

All I can say is that I used the DOS .bat files in the link I provided to Flash my ebay acquired IBM M1015 (with the P10 firmware version on an older ASUS MB) and have subsequently confirmed that a 500GB Seagate drive connected to that card in my ASRock H77 Pro4-M motherboard is now visible in my ESXi 5.1 installation under the Config/Storage section.

Note: The method I used above allows you to flash just the LSI firmware for IT mode and not flash the BIOS, which makes the ESXi boot process a bit quicker.

Before you install the card, before you even install the card write the SAS address down, it is on a green sticker.
You might want to disable your on board SATA and NIc before you begin.
You can flash the card with or without a boot rom. If you plan on booting the server with the on board sata, then you don't need it. Or you can flash it and just disable it.

Andy, look again and you will find that exact zip file in the link I originally provided.

Just as a hint, booting into ESXi 5.1 is done from a USB flash card not the on-board SATA.

The1015 is probably the best deal out there by a long shot. Problem is, when you flash it to IT mode you can run into the “ERROR: Failed to initialize PAL. Exiting program.” problem. This is more likely to occur on newer motherboards as they have optionROM limitations which cause this error. Normally your alternative is to try to flash using another motherboard. Here is an alternative: http://brycv.com/blog/2012/flashing-it-firmware-to-lsi-sas9211-8i/, using the UEFI shell. Your Asrock motherboard has a bios option to exit to EFI shell. Might be a good option for you.

Or I could use an H61 Motherboard- or even a socket939 AMD board... if it matters to not have UEFI. My Asrock H61 US3S I think has the newer bios but I am certain my dust collecting A8N-SLI deluxe Asus does not. lol.
