Planning to rebuild my 20TB WHS Flexraid server: Information requested. - Page 12

I am about to go get a 5200X2 athlon HP with integrated video... and pop it into that motherboard slot and try it.

My Asus does not have integrated video and I think your right the specs say x16 and x1.

Lucky I have all these PC's laying around. I am sure this is not something for a "normal" person to do ...

Looks like this is a common problem.

I do have a board that might work better.

if not- I'll try my H61 Asrock in my server (that is being replaced)

If that does not work I'll grab my LGA775 Core2 Asus ROG from my office PC... Or the ECS H61.... from another office PC.

I refuse to fail.

Oh.. My server and Desktop are on the other side... not in the picture. Those are up and running.

I am typing this on my desktop. My server is next to it on floor. It's 20TB are streaming a movie. My wife is watching POLTERGIEST with her sister... in the living room from the Dedicated HTPC.

It's a sickness. These two old pigs are just laying around. I inherited this HP from my mom when I built and gave her my old HTPC for a daily driver. It was a G630 + Z68 Asrock 8GB DDR and SSD. It was light years faster than her HP with a spinner HDD.

But luckily.. and hopefully that old pig will save me tonight with this IBM card. It's got integrated graphics.. so i am hoping the x16 slot will work to flash.

Is is an o and not a 0 ? As in a letter and not the number zero ???

I am probably going to do a personal server guide. Just really a post about my server build... .

Tomorrow I am going to swap my desktop case. (COSMOS II) and start on the server. I want to get the new one up and running before I take down the old one. Then I will just add the drives.
I have a silverstone HTPC case that I am going to take the old server (Asrock + G630) and make a HTPC for my brother for an Xmas present.

I am looking forward to adding my 4 seagate 3TB drives sitting here.

I need storage bad. I got about 500GB left on my current server.

On side note: These things get very hot!!!

It was hot all three times I took it out of each PC. Including now after it was finished flashing.

They always run this hot ???

The heatsink almost burns you. Wondering if I need a PCI card fan to cool this puppy.

I need to test it today. But it appeared to finish all the flash steps and confirm success on the screen.

I have not booted into the card. Yet. But I think it's ok. I first try my Asus A8N- but it appears to run x16 and x1 or x8 and x8. My card was running x16 so I believe the IBM card was getting x1. This caused problems. My board did not have integrated graphics so I could not remove the card.


Then--- I hooked up my Rosewill PSU, installed a CPU, slapped in some DDR3 ram and tried my Asrock Z77. Unlike the two previous Asrocks- This motherboard did not have any power on buttons on the motherboard so I very easily opened the Silverstone HTPC case I had- and just ran the power LED header switches so I could turn it on and off easily. I never bothered installing the motherboard- I just let it hang open on the counter.

That worked to fix my original issue- that failed (Step 2) I basically started all over and got to step 3. Then I got the FAILED PAL thing. of coarse it was new mobo with new bios.

So --- then I went and got an old HP Athlon X2 5000 machine that actually had integrated graphics. I popped the IBM card into that.. and it did not fail the PAL thing. I completed the flashing. It looks good.


In retrospect- It would have been smarter and easier to just use that machine the first time. Would have taken me only ten minutes.

Awesome !! So just slap it into the x8 or x16 slot and go right ???

I plan on building the new server with OS only... installing WHS2011 (gotta go find my disc) and flexraid. Getting that up and running with no HDD's. Once everything is installed and updated and stable I plan to add in the HDDs on motherboard sata ports and the IBM card. Should I install the card then plug in the HDD's to it ?? Or does it not matter ?

I would think any x16 slot would allow perfect x8 for the IBM card. So it comes down to your motherboard and what it does.
