Wireless transfer of 720 and 1080?

Sorry guys.
The more i read the more confused i get!!!
Im in the market for a new wireless router. Im sick of having to connect an external drive to my comp to watch 1080 or 720 movies and not being able to transfer files from 1 to the other. But i believe this is because my External HD is not formatted correctly?? NTFS?
I want an external hard drive to be able to be attached to the router so i can always run music/movies to my stereo or TV/laptop. Music is no problem for me now. My main issue is 1080 (or even 720) files. I want to both transfer to the external harddrive wirelessly as well as play movies onto my laptop (2011 macbook).
Is this possible?
My TV is also wirelessly connected (Samsung 8000).
So is it possible to watch a 720/1080 movie on my tv or comp being wirelessly transmitted from my router that has an external HD connected? Any recommendations of an wireless router and external HD (NTFS). would prob want a minimum of 1 Gb plus.

Sounds like you're looking for something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833146005 although I'm not suggesting this particular unit.

The format of your drive being NTFS is not a problem. As for getting 1080p over a wi-fi, that shouldn't be a problem.

Ok.
I was looking at the Asus RT-N66U so i guess im on the right path.
Are either of these fully capable of transferring movies wirelessly? Does anyone know from experience?

Also,
I currently have a D-Link DSL 2740B Modem Router.
Will i have to keep this or will what i buy (just say the Asus) work as a modem also?

Sorry. Im currently on ADSL2+ and in a small 3 bedroom house so distance would never be more than 30m

I don't know if anyone has successfully consistently streamed ANY 1080 content via wireless. I'd say if at all possible use wired, or if that is not an option use power-line adapters.

You can transfer the files wireless to your hard drive. However, you won't be able to play high bitrate file (movies) wireless without any lag / buffering. You will need to hard wire your set up. However, if you transcode your files and lower your bitrate you will be able to stream wireless. I can stream all of my DVD ripped movies wireless without any issue, but all of my BD ripped movies will not play smoothly. They are lagging and buffering.

Streaming 1080 content via the wireless N standard is only going to work under optimum conditions and that isnt very likely. You can get away with 720 sometimes but again it will vary. What is on the market now is the new AC wireless technology which is still in a draft form. That will have over 1g mbs as per its spec which will work for HD streaming. But there really arent any client devices out yet to take advantage of it. Netgear has relaesed their 1st AC usb NIC that will allow a max of 900mbs (fast enough for HD) but as a usb adapter your device will need the proper drivers to use it which today is limited to PC's and Mac's. So if you were to use a PC or Mac for a media player you would be good to go.

Check out http://www.netgear.com/home/products/wirelessrouters/ultimate-performance/default.aspx and look at the R6300 and R6200 AC routers if you want to learn more. The USB AC NIC is the A6200.

I have this router and also the wireless ethernet adapter that can be paired with it (Asus EA-N66). Although I'm only going through a few walls at about 20 ft, I can stream 1080p bluray rips without issue. The EA-N66 plugs into a switch where I have a popcorn and other devices sharing the connection.

I get a sustained transfer rate of 110 Mbps when doing file transfers. This is probably not the norm but works in my situation. I think if you go at a further distance you probably will run into issues. Also, if you have a lot of 5ghz routers in your area that will probably hamper speeds as well
