3D in the Home? Do you care? - Page 2

I have the LG 65LM6200 passive and really enjoy the films labeled as solid 3D showcasers; Hugo, Avatar, and even Avengers as a post conversion.

I'm not sure it technically counts as 3D, but I'd love to see more use of the dual play feature for video games. Giving a full screen to each player is pretty nice, and would be especially great for games like Madden when it comes to play calling. I know the market that can use this feature is minuscule, but I wish that more games acknowledged it as an option. The latest RE is a bit of a disaster as the T&B split screens are offset, creating a cropped pic when engaging dual play, not to mention a distorted aspect ratio.

I always thought that 3D was an unnecessary gimmick.

I've had my 3D Sony HDTV for about a year and never bothered to watch anything in 3D.
But with the widespread release of Avatar in 3D, I decided to order some Sony
Titanium 3D glasses.

I just wanted to finally checkout 3D.

So after watching my very first two 3D movies, Avengers and Avatar, I'am now hooked on 3D!
The incredible immersiveness of 3D draws you into the movie, in a way that 2D just can't.
Turns out that 3D is not a gimmick at all.
I find that it adds immeasurably to the enjoyment of movies.

In fact, watching 2D movies now seems so uninvolving.

Have the LG 55LV9500 that we turned on the 3D. Watch the occasional 3D, but mostly prefer to watch my LG 55LHX with Darbee. If had a choice between Darbee and 3D, I'd go with the Darbee. That I watch all the time. So, I have 3D, but don't care!

Wife can't seem to handle it, and usually leaves during the movie. Awaiting the Avatar Extended 3D Blu-ray to come out, which she wants to see. Will see what the results are of her Wanting to watch something in 3D.

In Sports, can't handle the BIG Gigantic Field, with the little tiny 3D players. BIG Gigantic Golf course, and the minature golfers. Hockey - never got that far!

My first experience watching 3D at the theater was Polar Express IMAX 3D, and ever since I had wanted a TV with that capability. When I heard of the availability of such technology I just waited for the right moment, and that came for me last December. I got everything LG (passive) and am still absolutely loving it! I get every title I can Blu-ray 3D and love the fact thata it is ever improving upon itself! YES, BRING IT ON!

I too am going to go front projection once it gets to low-cost passive 3D and would not be surprised if LG came up with a competent option!

I love watching all the 3D Blu-rays that are coming out!
I wish there were 3D broadcasts to watch though.

I voted "Don't Care" in the poll. I should explain, though, that when the time comes for me to replace my Pioneer Kuro plasma, I will probably buy a 3D display because of how prevalent the technology has become in high end HD displays.

I have been so underwhelmed by the 3D experience, I no longer watch 3D films in the theater. I opt for the 2D version instead. I wear glasses, so I hate having to put on a pair of glasses over the ones I am wearing already. My daughter and son in law have a 65 inch Panasonic plasma 3D display but the 3D experience in their home theater wasn't worth the inconvenience of having to wear 3D glasses. Bottom line: until and unless the technology develops to the point that we can see 3D without having to wear 3D glasses, 3D holds no interest for me.

I bought a new Samsung 55" D8000 last Christmas and it just happened to have 3D. I did not set out to get a TV that had 3D, it just so happened that the D8000 has it and came with 4 sets of glasses. I bought the D8000 because at that time it was the best looking picture in the whole showroom (IMO) the set stood out from all the rest. It came down to the D8000 and the Sharp 60" Aquos Quattron and I just thought the D8000 popped more. Not sure if the Sharp had 3D or not.

Since I now have 3D, I have picked up about 6 or 7 Blu Rays in 3D, most recently I Robot 3D and Avatar 3D. I gather the family from time to time and we all sync in and watch a 3D movie together. Makes a nice family night. I could live without it, but it is just one of those things that is nice to have when you want it. I mean really, if you are a HT enthusiast, why not have a 3D option? Waiting and saving for OLED!!

I'm just skeptical of the long term effects of watching too much content in 3D on your eyes & overall health. While the experience is cool and all, I just don't feel to swell after watching a movie (headache & slight nausea) not to mention I already have pretty bad eyes and I'm not even 30. I doubt there has been real long term studies on 3D vs eyes/health yet.

I got it a few months ago with my 70" Sharp. It's cool. Some 'WOW" moments watching the Olympics in 3D but coverage was delayed and spotty. I rarely use it now. I don't find that 3D adds that much in the theater or the home. The glasses are a pain since I wear glasses, but the Sharp ones fit over my regular spectacles nicely which is a plus. MUCH better than the ones at the movies. I've bought MIB, Prometheus, and The Avengers so far, and watched some on PPV. If I had it to do again I would not pay any extra for it, but it's a cool novelty at times, as long as you remember to keep the glasses charged.

3D came with the TV so all I had to do was to buy the glasses. I can now convert 2D -->3D via the TV or the BR player. It is no big deal and with few exceptions would watch most things in 2D, even though the 3D conversion is available for anything that will display on the TV. As to buying BRs, if I liked the movie I would buy the 3D package, but there aren't a lot of those.

another choice should be "Got it but never use it". I am sure there are many members that have a new display, but didn't get the new display specifically for 3D, instead they got the new set because they wanted to upgrade for a better product. As you can tell I am a bit biased, I am on the pre-order for a new PJ, but I am not getting it for 3D. Just want an upgrade to improve my current PJ. I've had a 3D Plasma for 2 years and the glasses are still in the box.

"Don't Want It"

Until technology reaches the point where 1. I do not have to wear glasses and 2. won't get a headache from viewing the material; I will happily embrace stunning 2D imagery on my Pioneer plasma.

What needs to stop immediately is the shift that some studios are making towards only including the full breadth of bonus materials on their 3D combo packages (ex. "Prometheus"). I ended up buying the combo for the extra features disc but I'll never view the 3D presentation in my home due to lack of desire and equipment. I feel like my purchase may somehow be construed as a "vote" for 3D presentation when the reality is something else all together.

I'm still building up to it:
Needed a new receiver; bought one with HDMI 1.4 switch
Needed a new BD player; bought one with 3D functionality
Now all I need is a new TV and/or projector but these are both completely to my satisfaction so unless someone wants to buy one of those and still pay a decent price it could be a couple of years before I actually have 3D in my living room.
I do have 3D on my PC though so I can watch 3D Blu-rays on my 27" screen

The success or failure of 3D in general is really in the hands of the networks. If the majority of the shows now on major channels were available in QUALITY, I say QUALITY 3D then the technology would be embraced by the masses. Not just sports and special programming but say 70% of the prime time shows on NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, TNT, SCIFI, USA, TBS, PBS. This would require a tremendous expenditure on equipment which is why it will never happen. No advantage in profits if everybody does it so nobody will do it.

How would this work? A new network channel for 3D only? What would happen to viewers who couldn't or didn't want to watch their TV shows in 3D?

Hollywood created 3D movies to lure people back to theaters. Manufacturers were only too happy to produce all new hardware for people to watch 3D at home.

For people who like the novelty of 3D that's great but it's not the Second Coming. Someone mentioned how watching 2D now is so uninvolving. Sad.

I'm not against 3d and have a few movies but currently no 3d display. However from the little I've tried I do seem to have some issues with pop out effects and focusing. Even if everything was set up just right it doesn't seem to add a lot to the experience for me. To be fair surround speakers haven't done a lot for me either.

I have 3D, I love it. Got my first set (Samsung 63" active plasma) in July 2010; added a second (LG 55" passive LED LCD) in April 2012. Since investing in 3D, I find myself buying less and less 2D content whereas support for 3D gets me to try stuff I normally wouldn't look at. I use it mostly for BluRay movie viewing and gaming (360 and PS3 so far; maybe Wii-U if they ever get some interesting content). I was never bothered by having to wear 3D glasses - and I need to wear prescription glasses for astigmatism - and passive TVs allow you to use clip-ons to minimize the obtrusiveness even further. The added sense of depth and occasional pop out of the screen just makes the viewing experience that much more immersive to me. So for me 3D has been well worth the money given how much use I have and continue to get out of it.

Went to the traveling Panasonic show in local mall about 3D. nice setup but I told rep,I don't wear glasses for anything and will not start wearing them for tv viewing.. case closed..

Ive had a Panny 60GT50 3D tv for over 2 months and I don't even have glasses.. Plan on buying some as soon as I get Avatar 3D on Blu ray. Other than that, are there any movies really worth getting on Blu ray that are 3D???

I dunno. I think the success of 3D depends on 3D Blu-Ray movies. Partly for the reasons you state. The quality isn't there in sat/cable 3D.

Personally, I don't want to watch everything in 3D. Just movies, and only if they're well-done.

Like I said before if it's done right I truly enjoy 3D. I do not want everything 3D tho. Hell no!

I like 3D for "Hugo" "Avatar" and "Prometheus" . But it is such a hassle for me to get 3D. Until I get a receiver that supports it, it is not really worth the pain, most of the time.

don't, and don't want it in my home. i cant even watch 3d, i get eye strain and motion sickness .

Watching a big budget movie such as Transformers 3 on Blu-Ray 3D on a 130 inch Stewert Screen is an amazing experience.
I totally love having a dedicated Home Theater with 3D capability.

I bought a 50" PDP this past February, and if there had been a 3D model without any other extra features I would not have bought it.

However, if there's a TV that has all the features I want, and 3D, I'd buy it.

I technically have 3D capable players (HTPC and PS3), but due to eye issues I could never take advantage of it.

I bought my 55-inch passive 3D TV almost a year ago now and am glad to have 3D. It's not something I use on any sort of regular basis, but a nice feature to have for sure. However, I usually stick to 3D movies and IMAX films that I can get at a decent price.

The key is the quality of the broadcast. If it always looks as good as Avatar then it will succeed. Keep in mind that the future of most new technology is the acceptance by the future generations, like our kids. Of course if we don't buy it they'll never get a chance to like or not like it.

I got it, but I selected Don't Care because I really do not. In home I feel it absolutely ruins the movie experience in every way possible. It truly is a gimmick. I end up paying too much attention to the glasses I'm wearing and whether or not I'm seeing a good 3D effect or not to the point where I end up focusing less on the movie and more on whether I'm seeing good 3D or not. I actually hate it but the best panels are 3D panels so I am forced to pay for it.

The range of opinions about 3D is interesting. For people who have become enthusiasts, 3D is a revolutionary technology, like the introduction of color or high definition. To others, its just an annoyance. Since getting a 3D projector 1 year ago and a gaming PC (content!) six months ago, I've been in AV heaven. I think it's too bad that others can't/don't/won't share in that.

I've never really grasped the aversion to glasses. I wear legitimately bulky active glasses over my prescription glasses and never give a thought to it. Yes, no glasses would be better, but to me they're an insignificant inconvenience compared to what they offer you, 3D. Image people saying they don't like to go out on sunny days because they need to wear sun glasses. Image people saying they hate video games because they don't want to have to hold a controller. Image people saying they don't like ice cream because you have to use a spoon. Image people who don't want to see clearly because they need to wear glasses. That's what it sounds like to me.
