Wii U - No coax or optical

The Wii U doesn't have coas or optical for sound. This means that anyone that's using a non HDMI1.3 3D amp/receiver for switching is screwed, right?

HDMI audio has been around for 6 years now, and it is supported in even the cheapest of relatively modern receivers. You don't get to complain about being "screwed" in that case. You just have really old gear. That's like complaining that you are getting "screwed" on 1080p Netflix because you are running a 2006 720p LCD that doesn't accept 1080p.

Analog out will likely still support ProLogic II as the Wii does, which is full, proper surround audio. Until you upgrade your receiver, that is likely your best bet.

I was referring to 3D HDMI. My receiver has HDMI audio but won't support 3D video passthrough.

What does 3D have to do with optical, coax, or the Wii U? In addition, how does having a receiver that supports audio over HDMI mean you are screwed without some optical jacks to run?

If I connect the WII U to my receiver to and use it as a switch, loop everyting to my projector, then if/when the WII U has 3D games, there will be no video passing through the receiver. Crysis looks awesome in 3D on the Xbox. The Wii U is much more powerfull so I think it's only a matter of time until we see a few 3D games)
My receiver doesn't support 3D(HDMI 1.3) pass through. It wouldn't be a problem if I could just get digital sound from optical/coas and use the HDMI for video.

Oh! So the problem is that your receiver doesn't support the functions that you want it to, and as such, the Wii U is screwing you? Yup, totally the Nintendo's fault that your receiver doesn't do what you'd like.

My original question is asking if I and others are screwed in not having a 3D capable receiver with the Wii U. Maybe there is a work around, maybe not, hence my question.
Never did I say it was Nintendo's fault. It´s taken me 3 posts to explain this to you. But thanks anyways for your very hepful and courteous replies. I should probably point out that was sarcasm, given how long it took you to get what I was trying to ask in my first post.

Nintendo said even before Wii U was announced that they weren't heading in the 3D direction with the Wii's successor and has made zero hint that their decision has changed as Wii U's release nears. So why worry about 3D?

I've only read from the big N that they weren't going to put an emphasis on 3D, but the WI U would be 3d capable. Since it's 3d capable I figure it's only a matter of time before third party developers will make 3d capable games, and even more so since it will be running the cry engine.

Perhaps your TV or projector or whatever that accepts 3D HDMI also has digital audio out. Many do.

Also, the Wii U has an analog out port like the Wii. You could probably use that along with the HDMI connected directly to your display.

I dunno man....I have a midrange receiver from 2009 (denon avr-1609) that doesn't support HDMI audio. Even the budget appleTV is smart enough to put an optical port on it. It's a little too soon to cut that out.

Hopefully there will be an adapter? Cause otherwise I can't use it in my living room.

A 1609 would be from the middle of 2008, or 4.5 years old. That isn't exactly a new piece of equipment you've got there, especially since HDMI itself was really only a year and a half old at that point. You're frankly lucky that thing even switches HDMI.

I rolled a Yamaha RXV2500 up until February of this year. It was a higher end receiver, one step down from Yamaha's top-end-but-older RXZ9. It predated HDMI by about two years. When I replaced it, I didn't complain that I was getting "screwed" by newer gear. I recognized the issue as exactly what it was. I had gotten 7 years of good use out of the thing, but that RXV2500 just didn't support the features I wanted any more. Now there is a cheaper, tiny Marantz NR1602 in its place. It does Audessey MultEQ, and all the modern HDMI stuff you'd expect. In half-a-decade when it no longer does what I want, I won't be getting "screwed" then either.

So, BD and keyser, instead of spending $350 on a Wii U, maybe the correct upgrade would be to get a modern receiver with that same money? I mean, that's pretty obvious to everyone else here, right?

I'm not sure what the optical or coax would provide that the analog output wouldn't in this case.

The Wii U outputs multichannel PCM. Optical and coax will only support 2 channels of multichannel PCM. To get any more, it has to be compressed into a Dolby or DTS stream, which I do not believe the Wii U can do.

I tried this, doesn't work. Video & audio is either HDMI *or* A/V out. There is no option to send the audio out the A/V while the video is sent via HDMI. This screws up one of my two gaming setups as my receiver doesn't have HDMI and for PS3 and XBox I make use of separate video (HDMI) and audio (optical / red-white) but apparently at this point the Wii U is incapable of doing this. I don't understand why, though.

I'm looking into this issue as well. My understanding is that Wii U outputs 5.1 LPCM over HDMI only. No Dolby Digital or DTS. The use of LPCM is what "screwing" people here.

Apparently Wii U drops the support for DPL2 as well (there is no mentioning on the support from Nintendo or Dolby). Rumor has it that Nintendo wants to save on the license fee.

Anyone got a clever way around this?

Or switch the "TV sound" setting on the Wii U to stereo for PLII

Also, I'm thinking the Wii never outputs 5 channels in surround, only 4. DLJ, can you confirm or refute?

Many TVs downmix incoming audio to 2 stereo channels, so any audio out from the TV to receivers would be limited to only 2 channels in this case.
