Yamaha rx-v1800 7.1 question

I have setup my Yamaha rx-V1800 with 7.1 hooked up. I popped in a movie that has 7.1, the Avengers and everything worked, all speakers as they should. The symbol on the receiver showed all the front, sides, and rear lit up meaning they were powered.

I then popped in Transformers the first one which is only 5.1, but one of my favorites and I got now sound out of the back rears. On the receiver, the back rears were also not lit up. I thought the receiver would automatically convert sound into those speakers if they were hooked up or am I wrong? Will they always be off the majority of the time? Is there a way to turn them on?

I also noticed this again with my Xbox. When I switch the receiver to my xbox. It does not recognize my back rear speakers or play any sound from them. From the Playstation 3 it does. All devices are connected by HDMI to the receiver and then to the TV via HDMI. I thought the receiver would automatically convert the sound to 7.1.. When the receiver is in Xbox mode the speakers showing on the receiver are fronts, center and sides...No rear. When in PS3, it is front, center, sides, and rear...Why would this be any different?

The speaker indicators on the front panel of the AVR indicate the channel signals it's receiving from your player, not which speakers are playing.

If you put a 5.1 movie in your PS3, you wont light up the rear lights on the AVR,

However you can expand 5.1 to 7.1 using any of the many extended surround decoders (like Dolby Pro Logic IIx) its in the manual.

There should be button on your remote for "Sur.Decode" , and no, it still wont light up the speaker light on the AVR.

official RX-V1800 thread here: http://www.avsforum.com/t/888942/the-official-yamaha-rx-v1800-rx-v3800-thread

if you didn't get a manual, you download one here: http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-visual/av-receivers-amps/rx/rx-v1800_black__u/?mode=model

The XBOX 360 doesn't have a bluray drive to decode 7.1 lossless audio tracks like the PS3 does tongue.gif

it only plays DVD's limited to 5.1 compressed audio tracks.
