New Audio Fidelity SACD's of Yes (CTTE!) and Rush

Audio Fidelity is getting back into the SACD business after a 10 year break- which is great news in itself. The first two releases are

Yes - Close To The Edge

Rush- Counterparts

They will both be hybrids but no 5.1 AFAIK. Since AF is releasing them, I may not miss the surround- for a while! biggrin.gif

If only CTTE was in 5.1...{sigh}. I'll probably still buy it though, for the 4th time. {sigh, again}

I've bought CttE a lot more than 4 times- probably had that many vinyl copies- including a mobile fidelity half-speed master. I will be passing on this, but would be all over a 5.1 release of it; CttE in surround would be the ultimate!
You reminded me of the 2 that I no longer own. I guess this would make number 6.

edit: forgot about the HDCD version, make that number 7.

I also have more copies of this than I can remember, including the MFSL. The HDCD version- that's hardcore! But considering this is AF, I think I'll give this one a try.

BTW, there have been some grumblings that the masters have not been lost, so maybe there will be a 5.1 of this eventually.

If the impending CttE SACD is not based on the masters, then what is its source? I am wary about garbage in = garbage out, even if it is in high definition SACD sound. I have the Fragile DVD-A (or is it SACD, can't remember now), and it is quite good. While I like CttE very much, I do also like the earlier albums a lot, including the eponymous labeled one with Peter Banks and his jazzy noodling. They would all be welcome in a better quality audio format.

It is the original multi-track tapes that would be required to produce a 5.1 master - and those original tapes are the ones that were originally thought to be missing, either in part or completely. Presumably this SACD comes from the original 2-ch master which clearly is not missing. Either way, I'm in.

That would be great; but is it confirmed? There was no mention in the Audio Fidelit site about the source.

It has been announced in their newsletter. Although release is said to be scheduled for December 2012, Steve Hoffman tweeted a few days ago that he was going to be mastering CTTE for the AF SACD soon. So the process is still at the very beginning.

Update:it is on pre-order on the Elusive disc website with a release date of December 11th.

Hoffman better get busy! Let's hope they don't rush the project just to meet some artificial deadline. Probably trying to get this done for the holiday season, but those that are inclined to buy this won't be deterred if it's released after Santa has come and gone.

Right. It seems like they're cutting it close if they are looking at a (early) December release. Don't forget, there are supposedly only 2 places left that still manufacture SACD's.

Yeah, I'd want to know what's being used as the source before taking the plunge. No sense in buying an SACD that's mastered from a 16/44 source. I assume they wouldn't bother if that was true, but you never know. If they've got access to the analog master stereo tape, I'm in.

I suppose it is the analog master tape. This is what Steve Hoffman tweeted a couple of days ago:

Tapes from the UK are now in, mastering YES "Close To The Edge" for AF SACD on Wed. with Stephen Marsh.  Gonna be pretty fun (I hope).

What's the story on the CTTE SACD? Acoustic Sounds charged me right away in Nov, but there is no indication as to when this might be released. I'm eyeing some of those Van Der Graaf elpeas there as they are tempting - if the analog sound is truly superior to the remastered CDs. Anyone has thoughts about this? I can't see VdGG ever being released in lossless digital and this may be the closest to quality sound that I will ever get.

CTTE is being pressed at the moment. Amazon has just changed the release date from Jan 8 to Jan 22. However, as the AF website is still showing the title as Coming Soon, this new Amazon date may well not be the definitive one.

Release date has been pushed back to Feb 19. We'll see if that holds.
Audio Fidelity releases are almost always delayed at least a few weeks, and often a month or more. It's just the way it is.

Here's some good news, or bad news depending on your bank account tongue.gif. AF just released the following info to their club members.

We are excited to announce that we will be releasing many of our classic recordings in Hybrid SACD. The Hybrid SACD releases will be a are part of the club program.

Each Platinum and Gold Member will receive the Hybrid SACD titles with your special number and will be shipped automatically as part of your membership.

Of course, you don't have to be a member to buy them. It's just more expensive that way! I guess the demand for these 2 releases woke them up! biggrin.gif

When you sign up for the AF club do the discs cost less? Or is it just that you get the same special number and get the discs earlier but at the same prices? Personally I will not be doing the club thing as there might be some releases that might not interest me.

This sort of reminds me of the old Columbia record club where, after the initial 5 records for a dollar or whatever it was, you were automatically sent (and billed for) albums whether you wanted them or not, unless you specifically told them not to or returned them.

At least in this case maybe the SACDs are available at a reduced price instead of the huge markup for the Columbia records. Still, I think I would be more selective in what I ordered rather than wanting everything they release.

CTTE in surround = YES
CTTE <> surround = YAWN....

Might go for Amused to Death because it's such a fantasitc recording even in STEREO (one of my favorite RedBook CDs to show off my BDP-95 and homebrew headphone amp with Sony MDR-V6s)...

Did not go for The Wall without surround.

Maybe in your opinion. But there are many including myself that will be buying the CTTE SACD. I'm sure it will sound excellent even though its "only" in stereo wink.gif. I've heard SACD/DVD-As in surround that didn't impress me at all. But I own quite a few stereo SACDs that sound outstanding.

Perhaps I will pick one up and see how it sounds. And yes - there are certainly some surround discs that are not very impressive.

Well it looks like both of these SACDs have been released. Those that subscribe to Audio Fidelity have reported that they have received both SACDs. So the 3/5 release time at Amazon and importcds should happen smile.gif.

I just checked my importcd account and it shows that my preordered CTTE SACD has shipped eek.gif. It is still showing a March 5th release date but maybe they got inventory earlier.

I got the same email. I guess that answers the question about importcd automatically canceling orders after 30 days!
