DIY Bookshelf with Integrated Subwoofer

I'm in desperate need of a new Subwoofer, but the WAF is high at this point after purchasing some huge floor standing speakers. The wife is pissed because my new speakers are preventing her from putting a small bookshelf in the Family room. So I got to thinking. What if I made something like THIS with a subwoofer on the bottom where drawer is? It would be probably a 12" driver and something for like 2600 cubic feet. I just don't know if the sub would nock things off the shelf. It mostly wouldn't be anything breakable on it.

As long as you can get the internal volume for the sub close enough, it should be fine. The only issue will be possibly limiting location possibilities. If the box portion is braced well and the shelf is heavy enough, I don't think it will vibrate much at all.

have you considered just mounting some shelves to the wall above your speakers for your wife?

the bookshelf...would be a really kool invisible sub.smile.gif

while you are at it. Consider building two subs if possible. Since that is a decent size room, you would probably want even bass throughout the room, unless you are seated at the same place.
