The never ending subwoofer adventure continues!

Today's to do list:

1)Add 3 shoplights to the garage so I can see what I am doing.
2)Remove mostly fried 21LW1400 from WiSub.
3)Replace 21LW1400 with 18HP1060 taken from a NewSub.
4)Remove frame of busted 18HP1060, and good 18HP1060 from a pair of NewSubs
5)Place a Zv3 18 in each of the two vacated NewSubs.
6)Test and prepare for show tomorrow.

The DCR of the 21LW1400 started out factory at 5ohms, after a show a couple of weeks ago and some voice coil smelliness it is now 2.3. Oops, but what can you do. Wussy drivers don't last long in my rig.

One of the 18HP1060s got brutally kicked in the night before my grille order showed up. Oops, I had managed 5 outings with no issues, definition of irony.

After careful assessment at the last show, when running 800w to the 18HP1060, they stay linear and sound great. But when fed 1100w, they audibly mechanically compress because they run out of stroke. I have a D1 Zv3 and a D2 Zv3 that I will be trying tomorrow. The D1 will be a 2ohm load pulling 1600w out of a channel of a KLR-3200, and the D2 will be a 4ohm load pulling 1100w. We'll see which one survives the night, and wich one runs out of either amp or mechanical throw first. According to simulation I'll end up 10mm short of Xmax at 1600w, but will be 5mm more than the Faital is capable of. Tomorrow night will be the beta test to see which coil config works out the best. Simulations and other predictive data is cool, but real world testing is where it is at.

Don't worry, I'll have pics smile.gif

So you managed to melt the 21LW1400 eek.gif
How'd that happen?

Also I recall you putting 3000 into the ZV3's before, right?
They'll beg for more at 1100/1600 biggrin.gif

AES is admittedly 1400w, but it seems it didn't like handling it's half of 3200w.

I bridged a KLR-3200 into the Zv3 D2 in an effort to fry it, didn't work. We'll see how it goes tomorrow.

Lights before and after, I ended up adding 4:

The Zv3 D2 comes out of the WiEasy:

The Zv3 D1 unpacked and ready:

Zv3s ready to load:

Busted 18HP1060 ready to come out:

Grilles added to prevent previous picture:

Zv3s loaded up:

And a couple of oops along the way:

More to come, still have to dive into the 21LW1400.

Single 8ohm coil. Running 25-70hz.

Remove the 21LW1400, and find out a couple of details.

One... I did a nice job with the coil, as usual:

Two... I completely forgot this was the cabinet with the SoloX, that I against better judment, slightly modified. Once the adapter plate came off I was quickly reminded:

Now for the tough one, do I load the SoloX or the 10HP1060 in the vacated cabinet, or just leave it empty for now. I plan to also run the RCF on a bridged KLR-2k tonight to see how out of shape I can get that one.

I relegated the 21LW1400 to the relative safety of the cabinet in my bedroom. It is nice to have bass in there again, but this thing really is a muddy mess. I'd like to remeasure the T/S parameters just to see how much they have shifted.

I'm leaving the 21 cabinet empty for now and will have a Zv3 vs 18HP1060 run tonight. One KLR-3200 per pair. I'll post some pics and impressions after.

Sweet! I really think those Sundown Zv3's were made just for you. They take lots of power and sound good. I hope they work out for you.

All set up:

I have a Zv3 and a Faital on each side. The difference made by not running out of mechanical throw in overall sound quality is huge. I should have been running Zv3 18s from the get go.

One interesting tidbit, I believe the D2 is heating more than the D1. I'll have to double check the DCR to make sure. Dust cap is warm, and there is a bit of voice coil sniffeh.
