MKVs on Windows 8 Media Center

I've been going crazy trying to get this figured out. On Windows 8, WMC just flat out ignores MKV files. They don't even show up as if they weren't even media files. I've been googling around for over an hour already and have found nothing.

Anyone have any ideas?

The don't play natively in Win 7 either, fwiw.
