KEF or Polk

Thread Starter
I have been looking around speakers and narrowed my choice to KEF IQ70.

I read in one of the thread that it is available for 50% off the list price, i could not find a dealer that has one in stock.

Any pointers on this regard would be great.

I ran into some deals on the poll monitor70 series, almost pulled the trigger, but thought would hold off and try for the KEF one more time.

Having never heard the Kef iq70...I think the consensus on this board is that is is a very good speaker. Seems like kef Direct has them in stock.

600 dollars plus shipping /pr
Polk M70s good speaker and can be had for a low as 300/pr from New Egg

So you have to decide if the Kef is 2x better than the Polk...

Good call. The IQs are very good speakers for the current pricing! I scooped up some IQ90s a while back and have been more then pleased with them.

If you can still find it, the IQ60c would be the perfect match. I never get a center for mine and I am pretty surprised that I don't really miss it.

Great! Thanks. May I ask the setup of your speakers, you have the IQ90's as your FL and FR, no center?

No luck in getting the IQ60c, any other good suggestions for the center?

Any suggestions on the Infinity Primus PC351 for the center channel (onkyo 818, KEF Q70, klipsch 12rw d)

A KEF rep recommended the Q series centers for the iQ series towers - the Q200c or the Q600c. You should probably avoid the CL series since they don't use the Uni-Q drivers - a very different sound.

I'm auditioning some KEFs right now and find that the Uni-Q drivers have exceptionally wide and even imaging - I'd consider trying a phantom-center set-up before spending money on center speaker. Or, use a phantom-center setup until you find an iQ60c used.

Newegg sells for $199 each if you catch one of their sales. Wouldn't be suprised if one pops up around Black Friday.

NewEgg is pricing it at 599 each, please correct me if i am wrong.

If you are mentioning the centers, i could not find it either.

Thanks

Like I said previously, if you catch one of their sales Newegg sells the iQ70 for $199 each.

Its not on sale right now but has been several times in the past. It'll probably come back again. If you can't wait get the iQ70 from kefdirect.com for $299.

What would be the suggestion on using the IQ90 as a center along with the IQ70's as FL and FR.

If you have room that's always an option but why wouldn't you just get another iQ70? That way you have 3 of the exact same speaker across the front stage and a perfect timbre/tonal match.

Good point, will look around for a few more days, if nothing shows up, will have to purchase one more of these from kefdirect. If Newegg comes up with the discount, that would be great, thank You
post #15 of 30
I'm looking to buy three of these when they go on sale on newegg as well. $600 for 3 of these is amazing considering they are $600 ea.retail. I was also considering some Focals or Aperions as well. But for $600 I have to give three of these a try when they go on sale.

The iQ70's appear to be discontinued. I am not sure if we will see those prices again as it may have been Kef and Newegg selling off remaining stock.

Look for a matching center here:

+1 If you have the space for a third iQ70 as a center that's probably a better option than either of the Q series centers. NTM it's cheaper.

Can someone help me on the difference between IQ70 and IQ90? I have a slight hunch on moving up to iq90 which is being sold at 399, when compared to 299 (IQ70)

The drivers seem to be the same, not sure what is the net difference for the end user.

The iQ90 has an extra 6.5" low frequency driver. so you'll get improved bass, better power handling and a taller cabinet. Will it be worth it to you? You'll have to decide that.
Thread Starter
Thanks! I would definetly use the extra bass, is this because of the 3 way instead of the 2.5 (IQ70)? Still not sure whether the extra 100 (X 3) is worth the trouble, considering i have a Klipsch RW12D.

Just get 3 Q90s and sell me the 70s for cheap smile.gif

Called Vanns to order the IQ90, rep told me to wait until the end of the week or early next week if i am going to buy 3, not sure whether they will discount it any further or even release a blanket coupon which could be used.

One more (noob) question, i cannot have the 3rd IQ90 horizontally placed due to issues wiht the availablity of space etc., is it going to be detremental if i place them vertically one next to each other (L+C and R separate or vice versa)

You don't want to place the IQ90 horizontally. It isn't meant to be oriented that way. That being said, your sound stage will be off, placing a speaker acting as a center directly next to the left or right speaker.

Ok! So if I use a 3rd q90 for center I have to place it exactly on the real center I.e., between Left and right?
^^^
That would be the ideal location.
the whole idea of a center is to produce the sounds that are supposed to come from the tv, like voices from someone facing the camera in a movie. if the center is off to one side or the other, you will not get that effect. if setting it to the side is your only option, you either need a smaller center to put in the exact center, or save your money cause it will do you more harm than good, imo.

Does anyone know whether Vanns is an authorized dealer for KEf?

The Kef website does not liste them as authorized dealer, however vanns.com lists them as an authorized dealer.

Kef clearly states that if i buy stuff from non authorized dealers, the warranty would not be honored, hence this question
post #29 of 30
They used to be. I believe since the BK filling, they are not...
