First Build - HTPC and Server All-in-one (no pictures)

Hey all,

Just wanted to post this, as I'm really proud of what I've been able to accomplish as an amateur, and would like your feedback. no pictures, because it's a box with computer stuff inside. smile.gif

I still have some work to do, but here are the specs:

Case - Supermicro from this thread.
Motherboard - GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UP5 TH
Processor - Intel i3 2100
RAM - Corsair 8gb
HD Controllers - Adaptec 6805 and Chenbro Port Multiplier (SAS/SATA)
HDDs - 5 x 2tb, 5 x 3tb
SSD - Intel 320 series
Tuner Card - Ceton Infinitv 4 PCI
Blu Ray Drive - Samsung USB 3.0 Drive

After modifying the case down to an atx form factor (thank you Litlgi74!), I installed all the hardware and it was a snap. Only problem was the system would spin up the fans, beep, and then stop working. Turns out my PSU was underpowered. Stepped up to a 425w PSU, and all was good.

Built the RAID array, installed my trusty copy of Windows 7 Professional, and started configuring all the hardware and software (thank you Assassin for your wonderful guides!)

This thing hasn't had so much as a hiccup. The Ceton is working better than ever with the new beta drivers installed. The Raid array wound up providing about a 300MB/s transfer rate when I used an eSATA hard drive array to transfer my movie collection over (about 5tb). Never thought I would see such fast copy speeds in my home.

Plan is to have this baby in my basement (build a rack), run the HDMI and a USB cable up into the living room above, and have a USB hub for the Blu-Ray drive, thumbdrive, etc).

Now, some questions:

In addition to the hardware RAID, should I implement some form of flexRAID? I was kind of pushing my comfort level with the hardware raid, to be honest.
Are there any disadvantages of having everything (server and HTPC) in one box like I've done?

If you have any questions regarding this build, or pointers, please post!

I started like you and quickly moved into a seperate server.

Advantages for sure.

I found having a media pc that plays media from a dedicated server to be a much better experience.

It's easier to add and manage from a powerful desktop and play back from a modest HTPC
