Why the scratching and popping noise?

I have got a noise coming out of my speakers when I play a CD. I thought at first it was the speakers but I've ruled those out. I ordered a CD Lens Cleaner and I'll try that when it comes. Unless some speaker cables are somewhat loose, I'll have to check those too. I've got a refurbished Denon CD Changer.

Unlike with turntables, when you hear strange noises from CD player, it means that electronics in it is broken. Laser problem usually manifests in skipping or inability to play at all. So I suspect you need an new player now.

Is the noise in one channel or both?

If you haven't already, try unplugging and reconnecting everything. Also try connecting the CD player to a different input.
