Possible to get around broken TV IR receiver?

So I have the opportunity to purchase a TV from a friend but he says that the IR receiver on the TV is broken, thus rendering the TV remote useless. A local shop gave him a quote of $75 to fix it. The TV is otherwise at a very good price, but I'm wondering if there is a way to get around the broken IR receiver? I was thinking of some kind of IR receiver that would attach to the TV and route the signal from the remote to the TV. Would appreciate any help on this issue.

Not likely that the tv has external IR input. Depending how handy or daring you are you can probably open it up, find the IR receiver and order it online for 10 bucks. Did this for my mom's bedroom tv (Vizio). Once taken apart the it was a simple fix. The part had numbers on it for an easy Google search.
