New SVS SB1000 & PB1000 Subwoofers!! - Page 22

I had an stf2 and it is a bedroom sub imo. Accurate but little output. I am very confident in saying that the pb1000 would be just as accurate and would provide much more output.

The difference between those two rooms dimensions is over 750 ft^3, which can't be overlooked. In a 15x12 room the PB1000 would pound, but in a 23x12 room it won't be as capable. So long as you don't like to listen at reference level it should be fine though.


Even if your mains can really go down to 30Hz you should cross them over higher; unburden them from the octave above 30Hz and let the sub do it's thing.


I just got my LV12R about a week ago and it's huge (physically). The PB1000 is deeper, but the LV12R is taller and wider. Not sure if that matters to you, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

agreed, same here. 4200 cubic feet, corner loaded the pb-1000 right next to the sofa and movies sound & feel great.

of course, i want to add a second one now

Gene Scala recommended the SB-1000 and PB-1000 this week as a replacement for the Pioneer sub in the Audioholics Pioneer SP-PK52FS 5.1 System review:

Don't know how much difference that will make since most people buying that system are doing so on a strict budget. Most are not likely to believe that they should spend as much on the sub as the rest of the speakers.

My AVR is Yamaha RX-V671 and I like to listen to music mostly below -40dB and movies at around -29dB. I'm sorry, I'm new at Audio stuff, so at what level is the so called the reference level? Thanks again

Much louder than you listen at. You have nothing to worry about.

0dB is reference level

Its a little more complicated than that. As I would imagine you know. But for simplicity sake I just said louder than she usually listens.

My wife just got me the SVS-PB1000 and I can say its a great performer. I'm using it in a 17x34 family room and its sufficient, though I don't crazy on the volume. One thing I like about the SVS-PB1000 (and the SB1000) that SVS does not really advertise is the ability for the units to pass 80hz and up to powered monitors. I have a pair of AudioEngine A5+ in the bed room and I occasionally place the PB1000 in that system and the result is incredible. The A5+ do only the mids and highs while the PB1000 takes the lower end. I looked at HSU, GE, Def Tech, PSB, and lots of others but as far as I could tell no one else offers this feature. If you have quality powered or active monitors I suggest taking a look at these SVSs. Btw, it was great working w/ SVS.

After calibration 0 is reference level. Take a spl meter and measure the decibels if you like. I usually run my system differently according to what im listening to
But its nice to know all the speakers are balanced properly

Got my PB-1000 on Friday and have a few hours on it so far. I really like it but think I will for sure need to get a 2nd one asap.

Give it some time before you make an assessment though because it does take a good 10-12 hours before it starts to come into it's own. You may ultimately find a second is necessary, but that one still probably needs to be broken in a bit more.

Been a lurker for a while now, but decided to come out for a look see and say hello! A few pages back someone mentioned impressions about either the SB or PB. I've got the SB-1000 just a few days ago from Sonicboomaudio.com. Great store/people to deal with.

It's a computer setup with Audioengine A5+ hooked up to Asus STX via RCA cables, along the SB-1000. All I can say is WOEW! Definitely didn't hear all the low end when with just the speakers. Mind you I just listen to music 80% of the time..but do watch movie once in a while. So I popped in Jurassic Park Blu-ray and I have to move the sub out AWAY from the wall. and turn it down just a tiny bit.

SB-1000 is definitely good enough for me, since I do have the PB12-NSD for my HT

it is getting a bit 'too much talking, and nothing happening' at the beginning, with all the ordering thing

what i got from your article (even though you tried not to say it so), is that the SB-1000 is not much for the PB-1000 at all. yes it is good and so on for very small rooms, but that's about it.

i also liked the pics with the drivers off. and i was disappointed about the inner look of the PB-1000. it looked so damn cheap to me. i find the SB-1000's inner look more 'careful'.

another thing i would like to see in there is, reasons for not buying this sub. and since you are a guy who tests subs, it would be perfect since you would have some experience on this.
For example, in my mind, i would never buy the SB-1000 because the price difference from the next sealed sub is not that big, (there is an offer from Lsound right now, that you can buy it for 580 i think),
and i bet it will be twice as good.
As for the PB-1000, in my case, with my space and my room, there should be a quote.... "do you feel lucky..... punk? If so, buy the sub and MAYBE (buy 2 or the next model) it will be good for your space".
Personally i still don't know if PB-1000 is what i would like from a sub.

As a customer to SVS, i would like to see an option of black piano look on these subs. even with a small price difference like 20-30 euros more. i would pay it for sure. (not now of course, since i bought it already).

And one personal thing i am experiencing with my sub, is that it doesn't go to auto standby all the time. i have to be lucky in order for it to work. i mentioned that to svs support once, they told me that they would send me a new amp, but then i told them i bought it from Lsound, and they informed me that i need to speak with them. (which i don't want to, since i kinda hate them for a few reasons).

I just spoke with a rep from SVS ablout the PB-1000. He said no break-in is required. He said just calibrate and enjoy.

I would question that. I got mine on Friday and it has improved noticeably after the weekend of use. Others on here, including Jim, have also stated that there is a break-in period on these.

How does one properly "break-in" a subwoofer?

Just use it. Basically hook it up, run calibration, use it for 10-15 hours, then re-run calibration, then judge it. Don't make any decisions until after all of that.

Just to add one piece to what Dustin said... it's best not to push it too much during break in. In other words, no War of the Worlds at 0dB until things have had a chance to loosen up some.

DustinLH00, how are you liking the new sub so far? Any first impressions?

I really like it so far. It definitely has some power behind it and sounds great. It did take several hours to break in and I am running it hot I believe. I ran MCACC and got it to come in at 0 and then turned it up to 2 or 3 from there. I could hear it out in the driveway yesterday while shoveling, so I think thats good I still want a 2nd one I think since my room is so big, but I am really impressed so far. I don't have much to compare it too, so I can't help you there. The bass is very clean though!

The driver suspension will loosen up slightly after a few hours of moderate/aggressive use, but there isn't going to be a massive change in T/S parameters for the driver during break-in. These drivers are designed to maintain stable T/S parameters and suspension compliance for many years. The subwoofer simply isn't going to generate 50% more max output after break-in or anything along those lines.
