Does it matter where I place my sub?

Hello,

I just purchased a sub but am having a hard time deciding on placement. I have a small room so I have very limited options. I can put it in the front right corner of the room (between a VERY large speaker and the HT cabinet) or the back left corner of the room behind a chair - there are absolutely no other options. Due to other items in the room and walking paths etc.

Does it matter much where it goes? Or is it likely to sound about the same either way?

Place the sub in your primary listening position and do a sub crawl. This will let you locate the most ideal location(s) for your sub. If you're lucky, one of the two spots you have in mind will be one of those locations. If you're not lucky, at least you'll have some idea of how much less output to expect.

Thanks, I don't know what a sub crawl is.

If I put it in my primary listening position, I think it will crush my legs smile.gif

Sub Crawl is where you put the sub where you normally sit, and crawl around the room until you find a "sweet spot" of bass, then thats where you place the sub.

Place the sub in your primary listening position, at what would roughly be ear-level when you're seated there. Your legs will be safe, since you won't be there! smile.gif You'll be busy crawling around the perimeter of the room, listening to some low-frequency tones - or a track such as "Whoomp! (There It Is)" by Tag Team - and finding out which location offers (which locations offer) the best bass response. In an ideal situation, you'd then place the sub in that spot (or in one of those spots). In a less than ideal situation, you put it where you have to and hope for the best.

The best method is to run REW sweep and check the frequency response of your room.
