Best floorstanding option for H/K avr 700

On Thursday my monitor60's blew. And I went out to my local audio stores. I asked them what are my best speaker options for my receiver. They showed me the top of the line, expensive speakers. I told them there is no point in spending upwards of $1000 for top of the line. Since I just have a basic receiver putting out 75 watts per channel. I dont think my receiver can put out the power the speakers need. Then they pretty much tried to get me to upgrade my whole system. With your guys honest opinion. What do you think my best options are? Am I better off re-ordering the 60's from newegg that are on sale for $100 a piece. Or is there something else better. My budget is $400-$500.

Well, first off, HK receiver's real power is more than its rated. 75w of HK is more like 110~130w of other brands.
Newegg is out of the 60s. But they have plenty of JBL Studio 1 180, 190 towers at low prices. JBL always mates well with HK.

Wow, I had know idea power would be different. Now it makes more sense at the audio store. Ill check them out now. thanks!

Those were the older model HKs. The new ones have been "redesigned" and no longer have the better high current amps in them.

What do you mean the Monitor 60's blew? Do you have any idea what is wrong with them? Tweeter, woofer, something else? Those speakers have a 5 year mfrs warranty so it may just be a simple replacement of a driver.

NOT that old. I had a AVR 635 that was also 75w. And it could drive a pair of JBL L890 towers, to 28 htz, w/o a sub. Could a 220w power amp do better, sure, but the HK did quite a good job.
Its only the last two series AVRs (1600, 2600, 3600; 1650, 2650, 3650) that had the more common (lower) power ratings.

The 1600, 2600 and 3600 still had the high current amp design. Not sure about the 1650, 2650 and 3650. The new models AVR 700 and 1700 are definitely different with less power in reserve.

I came home from work. And my father in law said he turned on the receiver. Held on to the volume button to long. And said speakers popped and started to make muffled noises. When I got home and checked it out. The cone had a break in it. Actually on both of the speaker. I had called newegg and polk. Newegg said they can't do anything for me. Since I didn't buy the extended warranty. Polk said the samething.

But the only reason I bought this one was. i was able to get more then half off of the price. From a friend of mines that worked for harman music out here in utah. Now i fully understand why the audio store i went to tried to upsell for a new system.

For a $500 budget, I would look at a different brand speaker first. Your current AVR can drive
a lot of speakers out there - if one does not abuse them. >>> The Polk drivers, are not higher
quality drivers. However, Polk is better built than some speakers out there.

Of all those AVRs only the 3600 has pre-outs, if one would need a power amp. And it claims 80w for both stereo and MC all channels driven.
I noticed the 3650 claims 110w for stereo; 110w 2 channels driven for 7 channels. That's a round about way of saying for 7 channels its ≤ 80w. So it would seem the xx00 series is as the earlier HK AVRs. The xx50 is in line with other manufacturers.

All audio stores will try to up sell the customer, no matter what gear he already has.
I can tell you the JBL Studio 1 series is much more efficient than the Polks you have now. So the 700 would have no trouble driving them.

Yeah I'm leaning towards jbl. I had no idea they were part of harman. So I'm gonna look into them. And figure it out from there.

JBLs and Harman make a good match, same for Parasound, Marantz. Those are my three top choices to match with JBL.

I appreciate the help. Ive decided to go with the Studio 1 series 190. After finding out they are part of Harman. I got them at way below my budget.
