Vizio E500i-A1 ??? - Page 2

Been busy all day, I will post my settings tomorrow in detail. Try movie mode in the meantime, I am using custom settings close to those.
Picture:

Picture Mode "custom"
Backlight "65"
Brightness "42"
Contrast "50"
Color "50"
Tint "0"
Sharpness "6"

Color temp "Cool" default set

Advanced Picture
Noise Red "low"
MPEG NR "low"
Color Enhancement "Rich Color"
Adaptive Luma "medium"
Film Mode "off"
Smart Dimming "on"
Ambient Light Sensor "off"

My provider is Directv and I am using this setting across the board Directv, blu ray, roku.

It is a happy medium with exception to overly lit newscasters at times. Let me know how you like it.

I just bought this tv and when you go through all the picture settings, you can adjust all of them except the backlight. it skips right over that adjustment(even on custom) I just called vizios customer service and they told me I cannot adjust the backlight using a HDMI cable, only with components. Any picture adjustments apparently need to be made through the cable box. I have a Motorola box from Verizon fios. The only picture adjustment is sharpness. Any suggestions?

You must go into the menu and turn off the ambient light sensor it will give you control over the backlight.

#1 If Vizio told you this, it again angers me how dumb tech support is there as in many companies.

#2 Did you even read the manual online? Try some obvious things like shutting of the ambient sensor? How is it you make picture adjustments through a cable box? Really? Im sorry but many people in these forums need to get a clue! Read the manual Kaley...enough said. Oh I suppose you need to know where the manual is too...look up your tv at Vizio's website and look for documentation/downloads on the E500i-A1.

Thanks. Ambient light sensor off worked.
hi everyone. while i regularly look to avsforum for advice and tips, this is my first time posting here.
I need to choose between this set and the samsung un40eh6030. Could anyone comment on the following regarding the vizio?

How is the banding and light bleed/flashlighting on the vizio?

How is the motion? Does it suffer from the SOE? especially since the 120 cant be turned off.

is this a matte or glossy finish?

Any pictures would be much appreciated.

Thanks!
I have personally owned both sets and after calibration of both I would say the Vizio is the winner.

Vizio has no banding and a very nice matte screen

SOE is non existent on the vizio it also has great screen uniformity and Little to no light bleed or flash lighting whereas the samsung had some SOE and bad lighting towards the edge of the screen
post #39 of 71
Thank you SMP. Is there a panel lottery with the Vizio that I should look out for?

So there's no SOE but how does this 50" Vizio handle motion? Any motion blur? I just wish they made this model without the apps as I could care less about those.

No panel lottery with this set and it handles motion pretty well some non HD content and lesser hd has motion blur when faces are up close moving on screen but sports look pretty good
post #42 of 71
it seems the vizio doesnt have motion interpolation, which is fine by me. the panel is still 120hz. interpolation causes the SOE which looks awful to me anyways. however i'm guessing that means it will have motion blur.
my local best buy had an e500 up on display today - the blues looked purple instead. bought one anyways and hoping that was a defective display. i'll post an update here once i have it calibrated (using the AVSHD 709 disc).
Your samsung looked bad because you got a bad panel you need one that starts with a T in the version number otherwise u are buying a bad panel

Looking forward to your update.

So are we certain this is a direct lit LED and not edge lit?

And it is local dimming?

Sounds like a pretty nice bargain if the above are true + no SOE and good handling of motion. I haven't been able to find one in the store yet.

Still debating all this? Really? Maybe you should review what I have posted in this thread. cnet will be making a correction on the specs this week so I have been told fyi. Wal Marts specs are correct btw as I have stated before.

There is no light bleed period, no flash lighting because this tv is not edge lit period. At 3.19 inches depth and not classified as A Razor model what makes you people think this is edge lit? Not saying it is not possible with the depth of screen, but my first sentence tells all.

I just ordered a Vizio E420i-A1 and it supposed to be the same TV but smaller.
I can't find any information regarding the calibration or settings so I will be using what ever I get out of this Thread redface.gif
Also will use Disney WOW.

So I asked Vizio before pulling the trigger and these are the findings:

The tv is direct-led(Vizio used term) = Full array, yes they said that.
True 120hz screen that takes 60hz signal and uses software and hardware to display it in 120hz. (very confusing...)

According to users reviews the viewing angles are bad but will find out soon.

If all goes south with this set I will be replacing it with a Toshiba 40L5200U.

Judge,
I am looking At the E401i-A2 at costco not sure if it is same tv smaller size. If anyone can shed light or if you can please let me know what you think of the TV once you get it set up. I thought it was better looking than the Samsung 40EH5050 but I know it's near impossible to get a definitive read in that environment.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
musicguyusa that TV is not the same tv at all... the E420i-A1 and E500i-A1 only differences are the size (42 and 50") and 1 extra HDMI. They share the same product manual.

I talked to Vizio and they assure that the tv is Full Array(Direct LED) with smart dimming... not sure if smart dimming is the same as Local dimming.

Also the screen is a Semi-Gloss and not Matte or Gloss screen. I went to walmart and they carry the 42" in stock but they do not have it on display.. My tv will be arriving today and as soon I analyze the tv will be posting my findings.

I'm coming from a 42" LG LED (42LM3400) with horrible flashing, edge light leaking from the corners and very bad SOE plus dead pixels.
I did get a chance to see the 50" in the flesh at a local bestbuy and I was very impressed with it. It was up high so I couldn't even tinker with it.

Also I did see that vizio is going (or maybe already do) a E550i (basically a 55" version of this tv). I think I would be more interested in that size (depending on the price) and as long as it doesn't have the SOE either.

Here's a link of some of the new Vizio's coming out:

http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/vizio-e550i/4505-6482_7-35566744.html

E550i, 55-inch, direct LED with Smart TV, 120Hz, local dimming;

I have had the E420i for over two weeks and I really like it. As stated in an earlier post, the default settings make the picture look fairly dull compared to many LCD's. I messed around with the "Color" setting and it now looks much better.

Vizio's press release at CES 2013 shows that there will be a 3D version of the 42" (E420d) and 50" (E50d) for only $30 more.
BB now has the E500-A1 and the M470SL at the same price. 50" vs 47". Doing a comparison, I see that the 47" uses much less energy and comes with the QWERTY remote. Would love to know if there are other differences. So hard to these things out. The M470SL isn't even listed on Vizio's web site.
Good thing I ordered through Amazon... if they release the 3D version in time I might just return the non-3D and get the new one biggrin.gif

I believe the M470SL is an older model and uses Razon Edge-Lit thus making it more energy saver. Also is skinnier than the Direct-LED ones.

I ordered the E500i-A1 from Costco 12/6 and the shipping company they used finally delivered it 12/30. Should have been delivered by Christmas
not really Costco's fault but that's another story. Local Costco had the E502AR in stock but wasn't impressed. The E500 had much better specs IMO.
I've had the set for a little over a week and I can say the wait was worth it. I have not experienced any of the problems the 60 and 70 inch people have.
No SOE, flashlighting, motion blur or lip sync issues at all. Set up was a snap and Netflix works great. Haven't tried any of the other apps yet.
I'm not a gamer, so no test for lag. Pic is a bit dull out of the box. Still tweeking, thanks buildersboy. Actually standard golf mode isn't bad.
Pic is really crisp and graphics razor sharp. Haven't had any problems with off angle viewing. Speakers aren't all that bad but I have surround sound and don't use the built in speakers. Room is very bright and the pic is so much better than the 42in plasma it replaced
Some of the cons, remote is NOT qwerty and feels cheap. Start up time is 20-30 seconds. This drives some people nuts but doesn't bother me.
I think I'm getting pretty good bang for the buck. Happy with the purchase.

Wow thats saying a lot that you feel the pic is better than a 42" plasma it replaced. Most av folks say plasma is the PQ king. I have a 50" Samsung plasma which is very nice but it's failing after only (2) years. Plus the glare is pertty bad. This is definately on my short list (in 55" form though) whenever those hit the marketplace.

the plasma is a panny about 6 years old. Let me clarify. At night the pic is great on the plasma but during the day really washed out
with all the light coming in. With the Vizio the pic is really nice day or night. Way to much glare on the plasma. The Vizio has a semi
matte screen to reduce the glare

The pic quality on this T.V. Is I'm at best!! All blacks have a grayish/blue hue and any dark scene looks washed out. This t.v. Is not for videophiles and I can clearly see why the price is so cheap

smp you found me out. You are correct. I am not a videophile. Just an average Joe that doesn't have 2k to spend on the
set of his dreams. To these tired old eyes it looks pretty darn good. I'll stand by my original statement, I think I'm getting
pretty good bang for the buck
